Hi there,
I am a wedding photographer and I am having terrible problems with my new 10d regarding flash exposure with an external 550EX flash. Of course I tried my second 550 flash as well to make sure the flash is not bad. I sent the camera to Canon for repair but the problems exist. Please view samples including EXIF data at

Tell me what you think about each shot. Is my camera a lemon?
Thanks
Ken

I have the same problems with my 420 flash. My conclusion is that there is no simple flash picture. Every picture must be worked out in advnace. Must be real tough for a wedding photograher, though. I would put some pictures on the internet, but it would add nothing to your pictures.

I have the 10 D and used my 420 EX on it for several shoots, and my experience has been that it slightly overexposes the picture ...when I turned down the flash compensation to -1 I was happier with the results

Each situation appears to be different. If there is a small room, no correction necessary. Otherwise, I've found there is no formula. I've had pictures with corrections from -1 thru -2.
One thing I've found that works is to use bounce flash for objects 2-22 feet, if ceiling is
