Hey everyone! Just got my 85mm f/1.8 a week or two ago and I decided to take it for a spin at the local indoor skatepark. Just as I expected, it worked like a charm! I was hoping to do a little bit better, but this being my first attempt, I think I did alright.:D Also tried out my new 580EX with the 17-40L for some half pipe shots, but those didn't come out quite as well, and the darn flash died pretty quick. even with a great flash, f/4 is a pain indoors!
All shot at f/1.8 with 85mm f/1.8, no noise reduction at all, and the kid in the green was shot with a 580EX. Oh yea, and he's upside down because he's doing a front flip!!! O_O Some of these kids were crazy good.
Lemme know what you think.

lighting looks pretty decent, so if i were you, i'd concentrate on composition the next time
all of them look good, except where the boys feet were cut off doing the front flip

welcome to the Canon85 club... the more you shoot it, the more you will appreciate it and how dang slow f2.8 can fell.
Good shots too, particularly the last 4, but my son informed me that tight shots are not what is popular in this sport when I showed him what I had done. Oh well. I like them.... but I am just a dad.

Yea, f/2.8 is pretty darn slow in comparison, that's why I'm losing my mind over my f/4 glass. As soon as I have the $$$ I'll be trading in for all f/2.8 or faster. 24-70 2.8L, 35 1.4L, 70-200 2.8L (Or 135 2L), and either 16-35 f/2.8 or 10-22, that's my to buy list.
I shot these tight because that's what I found the 85mm to be good for. It's just too long to get a nice lose shot with the ramp and the dude all in the pic. The angle doesn't really look all that great. For open shots I used the 17-40mm f/4L so I could get more under them.
I actually hung over the edge of the 15ft half pipe they had there to shoot some skaters flying in the air and doing hand plants and stuff. Gettin on your belly makes for some pretty sweet angles! f/4 just wasn't fast enough though, had a tough time, and the flash died right in the middle of it all. Just when I was getting the hang of things. Hate it when that happens.
Anyway, if ya want, I'll post those pics in this thread or a different one sometime today or tomorrow.

Indoor skatepark shots don't need to be fully lit like a birthday party does. Try a longer exposure, closer stance with fill flash and practice panning and timing. Motion blur is what you need with a frozen image lit up in the blur. It adds some life to the picture. These are great timed shots but lack that soul that many digital photographers miss out on trying to get the super tack sharp and fancy bokeh shots.
Let the subject work the image in action shots.
