Hi Fellow Photo Phanatics,

I just wanted to say Hi, introduce myself and ask a few questions about my new D10. I stumbled upon your group a few weeks ago while looking for info on the D10. I love the site! GREAT photographs! I really appreciate that you make yourselves available to help others. I do something similar on another board www.syngnathid.org and know how involved it can be. Truly a labor of love. Photography has been one of my hobbies for many many years. I am not a professional photographer. I would say my knowledge is limited at best. I basically have always used the auto features of my cameras. Most recently the Canon EOS Elan, but I have a decent eye for composition and a lot of patience.
I seem most drawn to photographing critters and people. I like close up work. I am currently enjoying photographing my marine fish. I belong to and moderate a board similar to this with the focus being care of seahorses and their relatives. I was recently asked to and completed shooting most of the photos for a fellow board member's book, on dwarf seahorses, which will be published in September of this year. I am very excited about the project and have only sold one other photograph twice. So this is all pretty new for me.

I had been researching the Canon D cameras for about 1.5 years, just after purchasing a Nikon Coolpix 995, which I was miserably dissatisfied with. I finally decided on the D60 and low and behold the D10 came out. This photo project I was asked to do gave me the needed shove to actually purchase the camera instead of continuing to drool over it. I ordered it and had to wait 10 days. That was a LONG 10 days.

I finally got my D10.

I LOVE it.

I have a few questions.....

Can it be used with the Speedlight 420EX and if so are there any functions that do not work with the D10? The literature that came with the camera only talks about the 520EZ. The salesman at SAMYs says yes it will work. I have been misinformed by them in the past, so I wanted to check.

Is there any appreciable difference in the quality of images recorded using CompactFlash media from different manufactures? Costco has a 256MB SanDisk CompactFlash for 69.99 and I was wondering if I should purchase it or if another brand would yield better results. If other brands are better quality which would you all recommend. Some of the price differences lead one to believe some are better than others.....ya know you get what you pay for sort of thing.

I have been using the camera to shoot my seahorses. Lighting is always a challenge. I was just messing around a bit one night trying to get familiar with the camera. I had less light on the tank than I would normally would. Although if I see something interesting going on I usually shoot spontaneously rather than set up lights, so I would like to be able to use the camera in this circumstance. I was using the camera on Av priority, with the 420EZ Speedlite, the iso set varied between 400 and 800 and auto focus. I noticed when I was reviewing my photos many were listed with the auto exposure bracketing at +1/2 and and the flash had been off. I had the exposure compensation bracketing set at 0. The flash unit was definitely turned on and flashed for all the iso 400 shots and a few iso 800 shots, but for most of the iso 800s it did not discharge.

So is there some auto feature that is coming into play that I do not fully understand to cause the flash not to flash and the aeb to reset itself to +1/2 in most of these shots taken at an iso of 800?

Thanks so much for your help and sorry for the long post.
