Just wondering what the going rate is for shooting assignments. I have an opportunity to shoot for a local magazine and they may need me to go on assignment. They asked what I charge and I'm not really sure what I should respond with. Nothing I've done before...

It would help if you provided more information about the type of magazine and the assignment. The question you asked is far to open ended for a response.

Yeah, this would be a great topic, for starting pros, or people who just shifted to this field, what are the NORMAL RATES around?
Anyone in California area? Can you give an insight on this, rates such as:
1. Wedding
2. Assignment (Landscapes, Certain Topic)
3. Studio Shoots
4. What else?
Anything would do, this way it would easy to build a picture on how it goes. On the above shooting assignments it doesnt have to be in details, like for the wedding such as number of prints, what is the standard? 250, 500, 1000?
This would really give us new starters a fresh idea. Thanks everyone!:)

Assignment rates can vary depending on the story, subject, location, client, expenses incurred. All are varying factors. There is really no way to give an answer to any of the above rate questions without knowing particulars. You can't call the auto mechanic and telkl him your car won't start and then ask how much to fix it. He doesn't know the particulars so, he can't even begin to give you a price.
Somethings you would need to know before pricing a job.
1. What do they need? Action, portrait, scenics, workplace, group shot.
2. What will the images be used for? Advertising, editorial, brochure, in house newsletter, company display.
3. If published will it be 1/4 page, double truck or cover shot?
4. What is the circulation of the publication and how often published?
5. What is the period of licensing?
6. Who retains copyright?
7. How will you be paid? Upon delivery, a week, a month, upon publication?
8. Is an invoice needed? Itemized or totaled?
There are multiple factors to determine a price for an assignment.
If you want to PM me the particulars I would be happy to give you an estimate on what pricing would be.
