Why not ;)

You don't have to shoot landscape @ f/16 or portrait @ f/1.2 all time

I want to experiment and find something new all time.

It is all in how you interpret a shot. Went to the zoo with my nine month old son. Who fell asleep during the Birds of Paradise show. So at the end I opened my bag the 85ii was on the camera and with a sleeping baby in the other arm I had no chance to change lenses. Took a close up shot - no cropping, sooc. The blue background isn't even the sky. It is a building behind the eagle.

Just worked out well and came together nicely :)

Well, I just bought this lens to try it out. Pics soon!

In a month or so, I'm going to have to sell either it or my 70-200. It's gonna be a tough choice.

Can anyone recommend an ND filter for this lens?

Looking at these:
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/146977-REG/Hoya_A72ND8X_72mm_Neutral_Density_NDX8.html
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/759311-REG/B_W_73093_72mm_103_Neutral_Density.html

Obviously a big difference in price.

Thanks! Whatever is available haha. I just recently bought an Einstein that I hardly use and I just use whatever lights the studio has. I think in my most recent studio shots it was a Profoto 7a into either a 46 or 60" octabank. Can't remember. I think it was a 60" one.

Could someone do me a favor?

Here is a 100% crop from the above image shot at f/1.6. I realize I shouldn't expect this lens to be super sharp at these apertures, but I'm wondering if this is about what i should expect. I haven't had a chance to dial in the microfocus adjustments yet.

http://i.imgur.com/Jb4cn.jpg

The focus point was smack dab on her front eye.

s2kennyc

Looks like you just missed focus there. The lens itself is pretty dang sharp...even wide open. Stopped down to F1.6 should be fine if you nail the focus.

That or your lens/camera combo is front-focusing. I could be wrong but the sand around her legs seems sharper.

Some shots seem to be okay, but on some it's definitely front focusing. Is that not something the microadjust will take care of? I'm wondering if I should just send the body and lens to Canon, especially since I'll probably be using it a lot.

with 1.4 you doing great with that result. its tough to have it on a group with that dof.

Not really tricky ! ... I don't have any trouble with 85L to shoot sport with thin DOF .. I am often @f1.2 or f1.4 ..
85L is one of the most reliable AF and fast enough to track for any sports.

DOF isn't only influenced by aperture. If you're standing far enough away, you can carry a group in focus at f/1.4

Well thank you sir. I just wanted to show a little love for the 85 1.2 II  I am my own boss, so I don't have to worry about the scenario of him walking in and scolding me, but I am picking up what you are putting down so I'll take it easy in the future.

+1 always appropriate DOF and speed to get the subject perfectly in focus and fully sharp. 85L brings rich colours and either a nice information background or smooth and creamy bokeh (I suppose depending of the situation) !

At least with 85 and 200 .. he is like a master ! 35L will be changed so we are waiting to see a comparison

 what's tricky with 85L is to guess which aperture to choose to get an appropriate DOF for the subject. ;) ...
That's the issue of the huge dof range at nearly any portrait distance. I don't know with a 400L2.8, but even with a 300L2.8 I rarely don't get both eyes et nose in focus, with 85L it's quite often a challenge to have all in focus.

It's still sticked on my 5DMKII as walkaround or 1DMKIII for action/sport because it's nearly the only 24h a day lens.
But, in this thread, most samples of "instant/handhold" portraits have a disgracing half of the face out of focus :(

Harm
20th of July 2012 (Fri), 14:31
boils down to distance x vs distance y in the end, where x is the distance from the camera to the subject and y is the distance from the subject to the background. People love that creamy bokeh, but do they pay much attention of where to place the subject?

sometimes you just can't move it, or it is wild, so as you rightly pointed out, it is about the aperture you select...but you may have to give that creamy bokeh

And one more factor for the bokeh is the distance of the background from the subject  ..
Anyway, such range of choice, in my country we say, "it's a trouble of lucky people"
