I noticed that we have no image archive for the 85L (mk1 or mk2). I think it's time we start one since we have had quite a discussion recently about this lens. Mods: if this has already been started, feel free to delete. I noticed the review by schmoezel, but it's not an image only archive.
I'll start I guess, nothing fancy.

There are ruins of an ancient palace, Cantacuzino Palace. That is a copy of the Petit Trianon in Versailles. Location is Floresti, Romania.

inspired by SIMON....
i went all dark on this couple because the church had noise backgrounds... i remembered SIMON having the solution as the SPOT LIGHT Lighting..
quadra with deep Octa did the job.. though a grid would have been much better for the job..
lighting was Elinchrom Quadra with Deep octa camera right at 1.2 power on the scale..

The fact that this thread has hit its second iteration is indeed a testament to the lens -- as far as I know no other lens archive has reached this point and, in fact, maybe the only other thread dedicated to a piece of hardware that has is the 5D Classic, which of course is still soaring on its fifth iteration!

Allison to be wedding in about 30 mins..
i always try to do a shot up the middle of the aisle.. creates a different look because most shooters use the Alter area, but rarely do i see the center aisle being used..
lighting was held by her brother camera right about 7 feet away..
power was probably 1.2-1.8 on the elinchrom scale..

Wow! grown to a second thread. Popular lens. This is one I had forgotten. Local radio personality, Marc Bernier. In radio studio, mixed light with bounce and fill flash. 7D, hence the nice tight head shot, 85mm L II, ISO 100, 1/250s @ f1.2. This is what the lens is designed to do. First image as shot. Second image, larger, my tweaks in color.

Allison Bride ~ Almost Married
Allison to be wedding in about 30 mins..
i always try to do a shot up the middle of the aisle.. creates a different look because most shooters use the Alter area, but rarely do i see the center aisle being used..
lighting was held by her brother camera right about 7 feet away..
power was probably 1.2-1.8 on the elinchrom scale..

If you find yourself shaking too much, it might be better if you get a monpod.

It all depends on what your budget, weight consideration and quality. (Carbon fiber or aluminum would consider into these factors)
Here's are many selections for you to choose from.
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/buy/Monopods-Unipods/N/4290434378
Top choices on quality in my opinion would be:
Gitzo
Manfrotto
Bogen
I also hear Benro and Induro's are great for it's price range
From price point / quality perspective, these Manfrotto's are the best.

^ very impressive focusing. At night plus an action shot.
What body did you use?
1D4.
I know many say the 85/1.2L II autofocus is too slow to keep track of action shots but I feel it has more to do with people shooting at 1.2.
So I stopped it down to f/2.0 with AI Servo & continuous drive.
I feel that other bodies such as the 40D, 7D, 5D & 5D2 can handle it as gracefully though the decisive moment would be more difficult to capture.

Even on 1.3x crop, this lens can still rock! :D
1/160, f4.5, 1 sb-28 on the right 1/32 power to simulate hard spot light...ISO3200 to get the ambient light in the background.

I am still having trouble with focusing but I know its probably me and my Fibromyalgia condition. Should I start using a tripod?
http://i889.photobucket.com/albums/ac95/basauder/IMG_0746.jpg
Yes! Always use a tripod when you can, and a good monopod is possibly more valuable than a tripod for everyday "snap" usage. Don't confuse focus issues with depth of field variations either. Your images are "ok," focus-wise . . . at the point the lens has set for correct focus. Then again, every lens is in focus at a specific distance and, at that distance, if it is blurry when the shutter is tripped . . . is is camera movement of some sort while the shutter is open.
Looking through this section at the large number of blurry photos (not yours though, for yours aren't severe at all) makes me wonder why folks post blurry photos to serve as example quality of the 85mm f/1.2 L lens . . . unless maybe they are posted by makers of competitive lenses! LOL
BACK TO YOUR IMAGES . . .
A tripod will force you to slow down and try different apertures taken of the same subject, at the same instant in time, to see how it affects your depth of field. Thus, you will eventually benefit of having the head knowledge to use the right aperture setting to get the effect you want! An added benefit? Your photos will be tack sharp at their exact focus distance with the camera on a secure tripod!
It isn't the camera's fault when your depth of field isn't what you want, for as a photo instructor once said, "a camera is programmed to make the same mistake EVERY time when it faces certain situations."
ANOTHER KINDLY SUGGESTION/TIP:
Avoid shooting a sitting woman at knee level. It draws the viewer's eyes to the wrong part of the image. Worse, the upper leg extending towards the camera lens distorts the legs . . . making them appear bigger than they are. It becomes a truly HUGE problem when using wide angle lenses but even using the 85mm telephoto it DOES distort a person's proportions.
A more effective suggestion would be to try to have the camera slightly above eye level, and focus on the eyes. Hope this helps. With each thoughtful critique we get better, and this is a good place to get that critique!

Thanks for the tips it really helps to get some pointers, I do think I have alot of problems shooting wide open with this lens. I have another shoot with her tomorrow at a petting zoo so will give it another go (she wanted a farm shoot lol) I keep trying to tell the model not to wear loud patterns but she always does.
I see what you mean about her legs I did make them look bigger than they are thank you for pointing that out to me. Keep up the critiques with me lately I had been thinking of selling the lens and going back to my regular 85 I once had but I know its user error not the lens. BTW I have thought about bring my tripod but its so darn heavy, so I was thinking on a monopod instead. Do you think that will help?

monopod's help, but if you're prone to heavy movement, the monopod will still move around with your breathing... i'd suggest playing with breathing technique before abandoning hand helds if carrying a tripod isn't an option.

Great image Ryan. Very nice composition, their flowers give it a splash of color and there was even a perfect spot to frame your logo.
