View Full Version : 10D vs D60 FOCUS ISSUES

Final word on focus issues? NOT! I decided that it was worthy of my own test. Equipment for test:
Canon EOS D60
Canon EOS 10D
Canon 50mm 1.4 prime lens
Canon 28-20 2.8L lens
Canon 70-200 2.8L lens

You can see the results below and impart your own conclusions. I believe there is no “real” issue with the 10D and focusing. The performance from this “non scientific” test tells me the minor front focusing with the zoom lenses is acceptable wide open. Notice the 50mm 1.4 prime is spot on for both the D60 and 10D. Also, I see no differences between the cameras. Moral of the story for me … wide open macro photography seems to perform better with prime lenses if auto focusing is enabled. I don’t do much macro photo so I’m perfectly content with the results. I’m sure some will not!

Yes, I ran my own test with my D60 and a few different lenses. My conclusion is that my D60 and its lenses have no focus problem.

I think other users have seen something real, but it is something specific to certain camera bodies and not something generic to the whole class.

Nice test !

What is the serial number of your body ??

There seem to be 2 problems with
the first batch 10D's, serial 023xx which are
solved on the later nr 04xx serial batches:

- variation of body thickness resulting in
front- or back focus

- mis-alligned CMOS - no final sharpness

It can also be a combination of those
two. My 10D body has a 023xx serial and
isn't as far as sharp as my D60 with which I
shot over 30,000 picts with with top L
lenses. Some 10D bodies already have been
swapped because of CMOS mis-allignment.

Also: (this may sound arrogant). Users
new to digital bodies with inferior glass
may not even now how sharp the D60 and
10D can be .... A good picture doens't need USM.
The D60 and 10D are very sensitive to good
glass !

Dog: Here a sample made with the D60,
unaltered, 33% of orginal size.

Dear tzrider:

The Serial numbers are pasted in the images above. I received my 10D about 10 days post PMA or mid-March.

I don't doubt that some have had legitmate focusing problems. However, I received my camera last week and took it on an event shoot this past week end. I had my other camera as a backup, shot a few shots and downloaded to my laptop to see if everything was going well. I ended up taking every shot with the new camera.

I was EXTREMELY impressed with color, sharpness, and general handling. I still will have to shoot a lot more to become "instinctive" with the camera but it really worked well for me. I used fill flash (on camera) on nearly every shot (outdoors in bright sunlight). I will be using an external flash in the future. I just needed more power for some of the shots.

I was really surprised about how little post processing that I needed. From everything I had read, the camera was supposed to need LOTS of post processing. I am almost embarrassed about how little I needed. Most shots I used Qimage and "1" level of "smart sharpening", only. That's about as easy as it gets. I had to get my "story" and photos in for a magazine deadline so it was a pleasant surprise.

Dear James:

I made my own test template in VISIO. The JPG download versions from other web sites did not have the sharp accuracy after typical JPG compression. My homebrew test chart incorporated vertical alternating lines at 0.24 points and 1.2 points thickness. I placed lines every 0.24 inches. Number “0” was the target BUT NOT THE FOCUS POINT. I set both the D60 and 10D for center focus point only. And placed the focus point like so:

All shots we done according to the test setups from PHOTO.NET site. Target test image at 45 degrees from camera and lenses placed at a distance according to these web sites.
Hope this helps!
