View Full Version : Kona wedding

Hi all,

I had a tough little gig out in Kona, Hawaii in May. I literally got off a plane, drove for almost an hour, shot for about an hour and a half, ate dinner in a half hour, and then was back on a plane home.

Some friends wanted a photographer for their tiny little wedding, and they asked me to do it for them. It was unpaid, but they covered my transportation, and fed me a great home-cooked steak dinner.

In addition to the time constraints, it was a hazardous environment! There were sharp lava rocks EVERYWHERE (oh and tide pools), and it made it difficult to move around and take pictures from many angles. Anyway, I gave it my best shot given the situation, and I'm not 100% satisfied with the results, and I can already think of some things I'd like to have done differently. I would love to have brought a strobe with a stand, but wasn't worth the baggage fees for a 1 hour shoot. :D

Nice shots considering. You could have brought a speedlight and stand as carry-on?

My main C&C is not photography related... why didn't you stay at least a night? Not sure exactly where you're from, but flying to HI and back in the same day from anywhere on the mainland is crazy. If this was intra-island, then maybe doable.

I had a speedlight, but no stand. The pastor tried to hold the flash for me in some shots, but he didn't realize that moving the flash a little bit would throw the light in places I didn't want, and lost in places I wanted it.

I couldn't stay the night because 1, they were on a tight budget, and I didn't want to suggest they pay for my room also. 2, I had to go back to my regular job the next day! :p

Oh, and yeah, it was just inter-island. I live on Oahu. :)

Hotels aren't that cheap in Hawaii but I would have definitely tried to get them to pay half for a room. I know, it's about 5 hours from The Big Island to California. That's just a LONG day of flying.

I'd love to live in Hawaii. Too many family members on the east coast and midwest.
