I don't think you need any consensus. Just get one that works. I have a couple (free) from a year or two ago, and they work fine.

Digital Image Recovery
PC Inspector File Recovery

There are many others.

PC inspector has worked several times for me.
A few others found files , but only let you recover 1 or a few (due to licence requirement)

It works.. You might need to purchase it but I have used it on a CF card before and it works. recovered all files plus some from a format previous to that. There are a few FAT32 file recovery tools around you can use.

I did the same thing about a month ago, and was frantic. I tried about 6-7 pieces of software, about 4 of which were free. It's amazing what different software picks up - I got results ranging from 0 found to 100 found to 600 found. Only one piece of software "found" the pictures I was looking for (it was software you had to buy to actually recover the pictures). So I purchased DiskInternals Flash Recovery, which works with pretty much any kind of drive (i use a 4 gig microdrive). It works quite well, so that's my $.02 :)
