Saw this ship departing Newcastle this afternoon, in cloudy conditions with rapidly fading light, so had to up the ISO hence the nosiy appearance. EOS 300D + 75-300mm.
The ship is the Cape Rosa, which is 300 metres long, and the second largest ship I have personally seen. Hopefully it will return soon in more photogenic conditions.

Thanks Sandy. You're right about them floating - they must be breaking a law of physics ;-). BTW it's a coal carrier.
Thanks John. About 50 metres or so I think.

That shot from the bow is amazing, really shows its size compared to that tug :)

Thats one of the smaller ones -see its loaded and on its way out the Hrbour frontwards being tugged. The other month one was so long they worked out there wouldn't be enough room to turn it around in the harbour so they tugged it into the harbour entrance and down the channel to the coal loaders backwards. That was the plan, sensible on paper and practical sounding between the officers on the Port Radio, but, well, you know how loud their fog horns are - you can hear them for miles!!- well, in practice the backing in op was halted quick smartly when the ear piecing beeps from the reversing warning started shattering windows around the harbour.

True story! Every form of transport made in asia has bloody beeping noises.

This one may well have gone up the channel backwards on the way in. I've seen them do that a couple of times. The week before I picked up the digital I seen them swing a 285 metre carrier in the basin, and the wash that hit the breakwall near The Brewery was like a mini-tsunami.
