So I am mostly a prime shooter. I own a few canon zooms but have never been all that happy with the quality with a few notable exceptions. Canon has really changed my mind on this one. I bought the lens on saturday at my trusty dealer, http://www.canogacamera.com/ I shot the lens saturday on the way home from the shop and Sunday at the 3rd Street Prominade in Santa Monica, California. I shot 300 images total. This is a great piece of glass! It weighs about 900lbs and its like forty feet long (Ok, not really) but it is sharp as sharp can be. The near circular aperture diaphragm between F2.8 and F5.6 is awesome for blowing out backgrounds and the bokeh is smooth and buttery. This lens is completely weather sealed and gasketed so you'll never have to worry about getting gunk inside the lens. It's also got a great finish and the build quality is top notch. All in all I'd say that this lens is worth every cent. If you are in the market for a zoom this one will be tough to beat.

these reviews influenced my purchase and are worth a read.
