The 16-35 is a great lens... rented one for Yellowstone... really liked it. rented the 85L a few times... very nice!!! What I love about the 135L is how fast it is to focus... and it is super sharp. I love the focal length on the 5D... I tossed around the idea of buying the 85L and the went with the 135L. No turning back. The 85L is magic... don't get me wrong... but... for me... the 135L just does it all.

I use a 5D and like to shoot indoors with low light, so the 85L works nice.... except for the slow focus. Can you use the 5D/135L in your house for wife/kids/friends candid portraits, or is it too long?

Depends on the size of your house. ROFL :D It is a little long... my partner in crime used it about a week ago to photograph kids and she thought it was a little long...

A 16-35 and 135 will just about complete my lens purchasing. I hope to pick one of them up in June and the other near the end of the year.

I don't use 135L, but when i use it i always say "WOW", i don't know why but it is capable of that.
My next lens from Canon is 85L [unless if i wait little long as i am thinking to buy a TS lens for NY], then i can keep that 85L for another time to buy.
135L is really a super lens, i didn't give it a fair use, but if i do then this lens will give me winner shots.

If you put any prime lens on 5D then i always hear: "I never take off the lens from camera" [in 85L thread, and 50, 135, 200, .....], even zoom threads. ;)

LOL Seriously... I had a few other lenses with me... never reached for them... used the mobile zoom features I was born with (legs)to compose/frame the shots. It is one of my favorite lenses in the mix.

Congrats! It's going to be as sharp as your 100mm macro...focus as fast or faster than your 85mm and the bokeh is just going to be fantastic... and... at F/2.0... I think you will be stunned to how sharp the images will turn out. Such a great lens!

Enjoy and post some shots.

I just never use the 135L anymore. I haven't used it since one time on March 14, when I needed something in a fairly similar range as my 85 f/1.8 until my 85L arrived. I've done over 10 jobs since then, and I haven't found a use or needed it for anything. I can't use it for low light ceremony because shutter speed (and camera shake blur) vs. IS, the 70-200 is a better choice. Maybe if I had some bigger environments with decent daytime light, greenery, shade, etc., it would come in handy.

Just wondering if people buy something great gear but if they didn't use it for a while should they sell it? if i buy 600 but i use it once every year then must i sell it? I have 300 which is use it only for matches which is rarely here, if i will sell it then i will struggle to use it, for me if i buy a great lens for example and i use it let's say 10% times it is enough for me to keep it, i sell only that gear i use 0% time.

I think that I know where you're coming from - I sold a fantastic 70-200 f/4L IS that I rarely used. It wasn't really the cost, but the opportunity cost that it represented - by selling a lens that saw very infrequent use, I was able to directly apply the funds towards a 35L, something that spends an awful lot of time on my camera.

Back to the 135L :D - from my friend's wedding over the weekend -

(btw, thank goodness for the 5D - even at f/2, 1/100, ISO 1600, I had to push the exposure by more than a stop in LR and it's still... well, not horrible!)

I think it's different for everyone, and depends on what and how you shoot. I don't use my 135L all that much, but I NEED it for certain situations, and even though I don't use it much, I don't plan to sell it.

On the other hand, I sold my 15mm FE after only a few months, because I didn't use it much, and didn't feel like I'd miss it much, which turned out to be true.

So, two lenses that don't get a ton of use, but two different outcomes.

Just like I would never sell my 24-70--it's not my personal favorite lens, but it's the one that makes me money.

And, to keep this on topic:

Took mine on an engagement shoot yesterday. Swapped between a 24-105 f/4L and this lens for a while, then put the 135 exclusively on my 5D (and the 24-105 on my 40D). As I was taking the shots with the 135, I really started getting excited with what I was seeing in the LCD screen. I like the 24-105, but the 135 is in its own world entirely.

Cool, I bought mine used off this forum for $855, thinking that B&H wouldn't get back in stock without hiking the price first (Amazon has it over $1000) due to the recent Canon price hike. Do you guys think that's a decent price to get a 6 month old one for? I had the chance to get a used one that was more beat up (including front element scratching) for $720 (which turns out to be $135 less than I paid...interesting amount ;) ), but since I figure this lens will be a mainstay in my portraiture, i sprang for the better condition one. Just wondering what other people would've done ;)

When I checked Adorama the price was around $985 and still OOS, B&H had it listed at the $935 and in stock when I ordered it, still processing though. Starting to get a bit pissy about it as it's supposed to be here tomorrow and no phone call yet stating a delay like their supposed to. http://img103.exs.cx/img103/1719/angry.gif

Edit: What do you know, it shipped last night just after six and got here about 9:45 this morning. Now I need to run out and take some completely uninteresting pics. B&H bumped the shipping on their own to overnight so it got here on time on their dime, they rock!

Tobiah, I totally agree with you. It's the first impression of the image that matters for me and sharpness and focus is definately not the first thing I value the image on.
There's a good vibe to your photo. Keep up the great work! ;)

This is a lens thread, after all, to show the characteristics of a particular lens.

I agree with this. Just because a lens can be spectacularly sharp, it doesn't mean that great pics with that lens always have to be. That is a great pic and shows what can be done with that lens. We don't need a 100% crop to show her individual eyelashes to show that it's a great pic taken with a great lens.

It doesn't showcase the sharpness of the lens, but who cares? It certainly shows the great bokeh.

Exactly, i found that it is useless the show the functionality of the lenses or even the cameras by showing web sizes, even the crops here will do nothing, i now only take real world shots and print them to many sizes and then i can see what this camera and that lens can do, otherwise i can post 1000 shots of any lens on their threads here so easily.

It shows how great the photos can be with this lens [or any lens] whether sharp in focus or soft out of focus, what more we need than a lens can produce great shot soft out of focus?

Although this is not the sharpest pic, it is virtually untouched, just a bit of contrast and cropping and slight vignette. Colours are amazing for straight out of the camera.

Ususally i shoot wide open with my 135L, it Bokeh is so smooth. But at a wedding on Saturday, I shot a few shots at f2.8 by accident. Sometimes my 5DII retains the aperture details fro the previous lens swap (200/2.8 ). Other times it remembers to use the max Aperture value in Av.
What I was surprised to see was that the aperture blades aren't circular and the Bokeh wasn't round but had a definate 7 point look to it. Anyone esle noticed this?
