Well this was what happened to me.

Had the 24-70L. Bought the 85 1.8 and fell in love. Sold the 24-70L...

Bought the 135L and now the 85mm just sits there for just in case situations. Even my 17-40L sits collecting dust at times. But I do warn you, do not attempt to try out a 135L.

Once that 135L unite with FF, then no power can take it off unless another killer no slough prime can take it off.

So what do you guys think of the 135 on a Mark III is it too much for general purpose or should I look more at the 85 f/1.8?

85mm is a very nice focal length on the Mk III.

Same feeling and action in the past about 135L or any another lens, now i don't need to go to each lens samples thread, i know what i am looking for and i just order it if i can afford it before looking at samples.

I found it too long...or more accurately in no-man's land.
That's why I sold it, but now that I got a 5DMKII as a second body, I miss it. I make do with the half priced 100 f2, which does about 90% of what the 135L does...but the 135L is a magical lens.:D

hmmmmmmmm.......

I have wanted a the 135 for as long as I discovered Canon, but went with the 70-200 after (in my mind) needing the versatility.

What do most of you who have the 135 and say not anything in the 200 range. Do u cope, or is it just more of a, "Well its so flipping amazing I dont care about 200 or versatility".

Most of my metadata tells me that 135 is great, but I also use the 70-200 at 200 quite often at the 200 end.

Slap it on the "Ol' Cropper" as you call it and you're getting the same FOV as 216mm but 2/3 of a stop faster!

Let me check something.

Hong Kong prices (retail price, I'd probably get them 2nd hand I think):
135L + 85 1.8 = 6,780 + 2,950 = $9730

85L = 15,300

So $5570 difference. Is it REALLY worth that much of a difference (that's $720USD)??

Does anyone here have a 200 and a 135? If so, do you guys find they're too close, or different enough to warrant both?

I haven't got both, but do have the 1.4x Extender in case I want to use my 135L as a longer prime (and the image quality is fine with the Extender in place). My next longer prime is the 300mm f/4 L IS, and I find that most times I don't need the in-between step of a 1.4x TC (but that's me, might be different for everyone).

The 135 with the 1.4 is 189. Sorta close to 200. Is the difference worth it in your opinion.

I've heard it said before that the 200 and the 135 have a different sort of look, so they're worth the difference. BUt I just want doods opinions. :)

I don't have a 200/2.8 because I have the 135L and 1.4x TC, and they do a fine job. If I really want to have a 200mm f/2.8, I just slap on my 70-200/2.8 L. Don't get me wrong, the 200/2.8 L is a wonderful lens, it's just that I would rather have the 135L, which is a whole stop faster, and more useful to me, and with the 1.4x TC I have the best of both worlds. If I shot an image with a 135L and 1.4x TC, stripped the EXIF and didn't tell you, there would be no reason for you to suspect that it wasn't done with the 200 prime. Is the optical quality as good as the naked prime? Of course not, but it's so close that you won't be able to tell unless you're viewing identical images side-by-side on a computer (and who does that??).

I have both (all three that you mentiond) and the 200mm f2.8 IIL is slightly sharper wide open than my 135L. It's also free of LoCA too. I can use a 1.4x tc on my 135L and I get a drop in IQ, but the same 1.4x tc has no such IQ drop on my 200mm f2.8 IIL.
I have both because I don't use a 70-200, they are too soft and cumbersome for my shooting tastes. I like the purity and IQ that primes offer but at the inconvienience of needing to swap lenses more frequently.
The 135L is a stunning lens, but the 200 IIL is slightly superior. As yet, I haven't found a review that shows this...so I currently take every lens review site with a big pinch of salt. Show me a 400mm f5.6 L review that has charts that say it's sharp. You won't find one, and yet the forums are full of sharp 400mm images.

I'm actually thinking of not getting the 70-200 2.8L IS because of how good the 200 2.8L II is.

I shoot events now and then and honestly, for that I think the 24-105 on my 5Dmkii and a choice prime on a 5D (2nd body) might be a good choice.

The last event I shot (a wedding) I used a combination of 24-105, 70-200 f/4 IS and my 200mm 2.8L

The nicest shots came from the 200 2.8L by far. :)

I'm thinking (perhaps) the 135 would give me a slightly wider option, though still longer than 105mm. I could choose depending on the event.

The 24-105 is actually a really good event lens on the 5Dmkii.

Opinions?

I use a 24-70/2.8 on my 2nd camera so the bottom end of the 70-200 range is already catered for. The 24-70 also focusses a lot closer than the larger 70-200 can and again it's IQ is better, it's lighter and less obtrusive. My primary body is my fixed lens swap out body. This takes either my 85IIL, 135L or 200IIL depending on my shooting needs. I use a sweet little Think Tank UD 40 as a lens changing bag which carries my primes. I can swap out lenses quicker than some guys can swap out cameras. I pound my lens mount, but no breakages so far.
I get critisied for claiming that a good 24-70 can rival a prime for IQ and look if used intelligently. It has a very close min focus distance and as such it can blow background out of focus better than any other zoom that I have owned. It's sharp, contrasty and has the same vignette look that my primes have. I'm talking look here, not brightness.

I wouldn't say that my 200IIL would ever replace my 135L. My lens choice depends on light levels and proximity. If the light is really low then I use my 50/1.2 and 85/1.2 and I move a lot closer. I personally find that my primes provide me with better low light shooting options than an IS equipped f2.8 zoom can offer. Plus I'm less obtrusive and I'm more happier with my images.
One of the dangers of using a zoom is that it only gets used at it's two extreams of Focal length. In this case 70mm and 200mm. The 85,100,135 and 160mm point all need learning too. A 135L has a particular look to it that is fantastic and worth the effort to master.

I'm actually thinking of not getting the 70-200 2.8L IS because of how good the 200 2.8L II is.
Me too....or the 135L....though that's very close to my 100 f/2.8.
Reading GMCPhotographics comments, I find myself thinking more and more about two bodies (1.6x and FF/1.3x), being able to be stealthy, and wanting glass which is, IMO, "better" than the zoom options.

I'm finding myself shying away from any of the white lens options in the 70-200 area, so although my next lens purchase has a way to go, the 200L is looking more and more like a winner.

Thoughts anyone? For or against?

Thanks dude (sorry for hijacking the thread a little, but it is concerning the 135L). After reading that, I'm thinking the zoom/prime combination is a good idea for events. It is what I've been doing so far, and it's worked out OK. Just a few more primes would give me more of a choice and they'd be faster too.

So I will be getting a 85 1.8 and a 135L :)

I might pick up a 24-70 2.8 too (maybe Sigma) just to have something a little wider but faster.

70-200 2.8L IS mkII ( ;) ) maybe later.

If anyone is reading this and they think the mkII of the 70-200 2.8L IS is out, I was only joking...

Edit: ^ HOLY Crap... self portrait is right.

Opinions?

Same here man. I kept my 70-200 2.8 solely for the reason that I knew I was doing a wedding and ended up that I really felt I didn't need the versitility at all.

Thanks to everyone else that responded to my earlier post. I'm deciding which prime at this point, 85L or 135... I'm going to need to do a lot of gaffer tapping the 7-2 to see what I'm at normally. Metadata is very mixed when I look at that.

Yeh, I'm thinking to go for the 85/135 first at least. If Canon bring out a new 70-200 2.8L IS I might go for that (if it delivers on quality).

I'm about to unload my 85 f/1.8. Fab for a crop sensor, no so much for a ff.

So would a 50 1.4 cover the wider end in your opinion (considering perspective is more about distance from the subject over actual focal length, I could just crop to get 85mm).

People with FF, does the 85 make sense if you have 135?

thatkatmat

I found I didn't use my 85L much, at first I thought perhaps the slow AF was making me reach for the 135L more, so I sold the L and picked up the 85/1.8....Suffice to say I think it's just 85mm on my FF, the 135L is seeing all the action while my very sharp and very fast AF 85/1.8 spends most of its time in the bag.

Iv'e been reading these posts for the last two months and have decided to get the 135L. Amazing everything about this lens. I used to use a 135mm back in the film camera days when I took lots of portraits. I'm going to hook it up to my 5D Mk II. I'm getting this even before I get a walk around lens. So now that it's been ordered I just have to wait about seven more days until it arrives. Until then I will just keep looking at the fabulous images that you are submitting to this post.

When I only had the 30D I used my 30mm f/1.4 and 85mm f/1.8 quite a bit. Now it's the Siggy 50mm on the 5Dii, and soon the 135L. I think it's largely what I'm used to - the step up in sensor size makes these the functional equivalents (30mm=50mm, 85mm=135mm).

People with FF, does the 85 make sense if you have 135?

For my shooting, the 85mm seems a bit awkward on a ff. A lot of people still think it's a great lens, particularly portraiture, but it just doesn't suit me that well.

I think the Curves adjustment I laid on this truncated the devide between the dark wood and the blown out sky.

In the original (read: boring color) version, the transition is definately smoother. I need to go back and do this again with masks instead of just a selection.

Check out Thomas Hawk if you guys don't know him.
He pretty much convinced me to sell my 70-200 and get the 135L.

Here's a video Mark Silber did of Thomas Hawk were he mentions its his favourite lens. Check out there blogs if you havent.

what was it that convinced you to go the 135 route? I'm currently undecided between those two lenses.

I was hesitant for quite a while with the idea of buying a 135L. I wasn't sure if the constant 135mm focal length would be right enough to justify spending close to a thousand dollars.
I recently sold my 70-200 f/4L IS and replaced it with one.

I have to admit, that was the best photography decision I made in my recent memory. This thing is truly amazing.

Well if that doesn't make you want one... haha I'll be looking for someone to sell my 70-200 very soon. I'm hoping to find someone out there up for a swap tho to make things really easy.

I borrowed a 135L a couple of weeks ago. Since then I've found a buyer for my 70-200 f/4IS and will be using the money for a 135L.

I've flip-flopped and I was going to get this lens instead of the 70-200 2.8L IS. But yesterday I was photographing some stuff with my 200mm 2.8L and my 24-105. I found I really prefer the 85mm focal length and the flexibility of a zoom was what I needed at the longer end (can stick around 85 or zoom in if I need to also I am trying to break into kids parties  so I need more flexibility for shooting kids, as kids move fast. Man that last sentence would look bad taken out of context  ). Also the IS would help on occasion.

But what you guys were saying above has be thinking harder about this lens.

Eventually I'll get this lens, but the 70-200 2.8L IS will be first I think. Unless someone can change my mind. ;)

it's rare that I get to use this lens and will often (95%) of the time mount the 70-200 2.8IS instead. there are situations where this lens shines the most... indoor sports being one of them. af speed and accuracy is spectacular with this lens compared to any of my other lenses.

Nice photos. :)

This is why I'm thinking the 70-200 would be better for ME (YMMV). I just need the flexiblity of a zoom for live events... or do I?! I think for wedding, I could get away with a 24-70 + prime (85/135/200)

However for shooting kids at a party (lol don't misquote me) you really need the flexibility of a zoom. BTW I'm not intending to do this casually (just with family), but rather as a part of my business.

Probably I'll go for the 85 1.8 first (cheaper) then seen if I can get the 135 at a later date. Especially if I start getting some more portrait work... 70-200 2.8L IS is first up though. :)

135 will beckon me back one day I guess. I've wanted this lens since I first saw this thread. :) One day... but you gotta go with what you NEED before you go with what you WANT. ;)

Man that is an unfortunate way of writing it :lol::lol:
If you're going to be inside I would go with the 85mm. The 135 might be a little long for inside.
If outside, either one would be cool.
Judging from your previous post, I think you've already decided and that's good because that's the hard part. :D
Do eventually get it (135) though, because it's a great lens.

Here's one that I took in Orlando, a weekend or so, ago. Old town Kissimmee.

A picture of a mural on the wall. The wall was across a tiny street.

5D + 135L + 1/250th at 8.0, ISO 50.

^^ I thought this was a good lens... but that photo looks all 2D and lifeless. :p

I will get one soon enough. I wish I had the money for every lens I WANTED... but then I'd be a rich dude... and probably too busy to POTN very much (yeah, Skygod44 got me using POTN as a verb...).

DOH! I should have told the paintings to pop out of the wall, for a couple of shots. My mistake.

Royv, How were you able to combine two photos into one as shown on your second photo.? I'm trying to do a before and after show and this would be a great way to do it.

My order of the 135L is arriving today around 11A.M. I bought it from B&H Photo. After viewing these posts for about 2 months you can imagine my excitement in getting this lens. I'll match it with my 5DII. This should keep me busy for awhile. I think this is a perfect portrait lens.:)
