Royv, How were you able to combine two photos into one as shown on your second photo.? I'm trying to do a before and after show and this would be a great way to do it.
Just use photoshop to make two images the same size, copy one, then create a new document, but double the width (or height) that PS wants to make (it's using your clipboard image as a reference), then post them both into the new document.
My order of the 135L is arriving today around 11A.M. I bought it from B&H Photo. After viewing these posts for about 2 months you can imagine my excitement in getting this lens. I'll match it with my 5DII. This should keep me busy for awhile. I think this is a perfect portrait lens.:)
I'm hoping mine arrives on time. Portraiture will be its primary use for me, too.

I think this is a perfect portrait lens.:)
It's a perfect lens in all regards. The ONLY shortcoming from the lens is when you don't have room to back-up & compose... then again, that's not the 135L's fault

They might improve it, but what I think is it will be a new coating etc. it might become a F/2 IS "White" version that costs $5000USD though, which makes it a new lens really, not a version 2.
Just speculating.

If you shoot RAW on a 5Dmkii you should be able to crop down to 10mp and get around 200mm on this.
Alternatively you could get an extender. ;)
Sometimes zooms are handy though. :)

I find that it's often a bit short when I need a telephoto--I personally couldn't replace the 70-200 with it, because of the flexibility of the zoom and the extra focal length. You can add a teleconverter to the 135, and it takes them well, but you have to plan ahead for that most of the time. If you are close enough, though, the 135 would make an awesome sports lens--it's very fast focusing and very fast at f/2. I'm surprised more people don't use it for sports where they use the 85 f/1.8... I guess it's just a long focal length issue.

Thanks very much. It was a relaxing stroll, and even if I hadn't come home with any keepers, I would have achieved my goals. :)

i can not decide this lens 135L or the 85L for my next lens?
for senior pictures and portraits i won't go any more narrow depth of field than 2.2 so really the 135L should get me some super sharp photos or will the 85L @ 2.2 be even more sharp?

Had the same challenge before I bought mine.... http://www.lensrentals.com helped me choose. LOL I rented them... and for me... my style of shooting... the 135L was a clear winner. Blazing fast to lock focus and to change focus from near to far and back again... the bokeh is fantastic... @ f/2.0 the images are very sharp with F2.2 to F/5.6 being super sharp. Plus... it saved me some cash. :)
The 85L is a great lens... but... with all that glass... super slow to change focus compared to the 135L. F 1.2... it's cool.... people need it...use it... love it.... for my style once again... F2.0 is just fine.
Just my $.02.... can't go wrong no matter the direction... but... I would try before you buy. :)

From what I've read. I think it would be better to get the 135L AND the 85 1.8 for cheaper than the 85L. The 85L is a very special lens, but IMHO it has a narrow use range.

This lens is amazing on all Canon DSLRs, but the issue is that it will be so long on those 1.6x bodies, so then you have to use your feet and be in a big enough space if you want to shoot portraits full body at least.

The 135 is a little long on a crop for me, but some really like it.....Depending how far away from the kayaking you are, I think I'd rather use an 85/1.8 or a 70-200. The 85mm will give you about the same FOV as the 135mm on FF..

Loving this lens on walkabout on a second body. Especially in woods/timber with low-light, then with occasional open meadow areas. 135mm on a crop body @ f/2.5 to f/4 can produce some sweet shots with plenty of IQ to chop in just a little closer in PP. This one at f/4; 1/640; ISO 125 near sunset. Cropped for composition with minor tweaking:

As far as wich to get 85vs135 i personally feels that its entirely up to the format your shooting. On FF 85mm is short, and if you want shallow dof headshots you will get distortion. The 135mm is very close to the fov you get with a 85 on cropped.
I personally use 135mm on my FF cameras alot more then 85m. Eventhough none of them is a Canon...;)

This is for another thread, but I think they should have a 50 f/1.4L, also--kind of like the 70-200 f/2.8 and f/4Ls... a cheaper, well-built 50, and a really nice, exclusive 50.

Jannie
24th of June 2009 (Wed), 23:45
We never had anything that was weather sealed in the old days, but a lot of people are worried about it now. My 5D wasn't sealed, I live in the NW and it rains all year long and I don't worry about it but I am careful; mostly I have a rule, I don't like to get wet and neither does my camera. A friend of mine has been shooting a lot the last several years in the rain forests of Brazil and the Amazon with two 5D's and now has replaced them with two 5DII's so they can't be that bad. What do they actually do to weather seal a lens, I think my 70-200 has a rubber ring on the lens mount but that's all I'm aware of. I do use UV filters which does offer some protection.
That said, the 135mm is one of best values in a lens from anyone as far as I am concerned and worth a heck of a lot more than they charge. The only way they could improve it is if they added IS but that's never been a problem with that lens for me on either the 5D or MKIII.

Just got my 135/2 yesterday. My first L!
I had rented it previously, so I knew what to expect, but man is she a beauty. :)
One question though: I don't really want to have to walk around with the huge hood, but that giant front element scares me being exposed. Do people tend to put a filter in front of all this lovely glass? I'd hate to impact IQ at all though, and I rarely carry a lens cap (I was missing too many shots fumbling with it).

Walk around where?
I never use that long lens for my walk around in cities, even 85mm, i was using only 50mm when i was in Singapore for few hours as transit and 50mm was limiting me in many situations, so the bext lens for walkaround is the zoom from wide angle or ultra wide [17, 18, 24,...] up to mid range or long [70, 105, 135, 200,...] to cover more things, too bad that i don't like to use my feet all the time as zoom mostly in street full of cars.

I like the hood on there, then I dont have to worry about it. I just sling it over a shoulder and no worrys at all. I always have the lens cap around tho. They make small elastic straps for easy on/off, but I dont care for the cap swingin around below the lens, but it works ok .

A hood can only help IQ in terms of contrast and keeping stray light out of that large element. I use a B&W filter on mine but some people do not like filters. It's personal choice there.
But the lens hood, use it.
They didn't make it for anything, there was a reason.
You are going to love this lens on your 5D.

I generally put filters on my lenses, but found that I was having flare/loss of contrast issues with a filter on the 135L... it was a multi-coated UV filter, too, so not crappy quality. So, I'd say use the hood and forget the filter, but YMMV.

I used to put UV's on all my lenses, but it does affect the IQ, even if it's just a little and even with expensive UV's. Now I put one on if it's gonna be moist or dusty out, other than that I let the hood do it's job.

I never use that long lens for my walk around in cities...
I like candid street photography. I don't like to get in people's faces. I've seen youtube videos of the guys who do that, but that's just not me. I've made quite a few images where people have no idea I photographed them, and that's the way I like it. :)
I like the hood on there, then I dont have to worry about it.
I like hoods too, it's just that it makes an otherwise-discreet lens look like a cannon (no pun intended). The lens really is quite large with the hood on it. For the record, the hood is always on my 85/1.8, but that's a significantly smaller lens.

Agreed again. I guess I'll just have to forgo discreetness in the name of IQ and lens protection.
Thanks all. :)
