Thanks. The sculptures were indeed interesting, but the background wasn't (hence the processing). I missed focus on the rabbits, but it worked for me nevertheless.

They're in the grounds of a country house here in the UK. The people who run the house have an arrangement with local sculpters to display their work in the grounds. Some of the sculptures are sympathetic and "work" (like these ones), others take a bit more thought to understand.

You can also do macro with this lens. Two experimental shots with very high contrast, last bright light of the day, handheld, with 25 mm extension tube, on 5D II, the first at 800 iso, the second at 1600, and both at F/8. Handheld of course :D.

Kind regards, Wim

It spooked me to hear that Canon might do away with a renowned lens, so I bought one and received it just now--an hour ago--time enough to go out the door and use one of my hibiscus as a test subject

Canon 5DM2, 135 L, ISO 100, 1/800s @ f7 on program mode and I think I was trying to fine-tune the AF when I shot the image handheld at closest focus.

These are no great shakes as images but I'm pleased to see the sharpness of the fine hairs on the 100 percent crop of the whole image.

Pete, how do you like the combo, with a tube? I've seen some nice results...and I like your second one. :)

Thanks. It works fairly well, although the lens does tend to get a bit confused in focusing (I find I have to give it a help every so often). But then again, I'm used to manually focusing in macro world.

The quality of bokeh can suffer in some circumstances, but if you control the background, then the typical 135 creaminess comes shining through...

Cool. I'll have to give it a whirl...and borrow a friends' tube for a few. What sized tube was it that you were using?

I have a set of three kenko tubes. I tend to mix and match according to what range I'm shooting at and how much magnification is required.

If you want to get really jiggy, you can add a TC to the tubes.

I find myself using the 1/FL rule, for critical sharpness, and even sometimes using that theory doesn't work well, for me. I hate having the shakes, but, still do what I love, anyway as often as possible. Wish the 135L had IS...maybe soon, it will. :)

The 135L is simple, effective and just drop dead perfect. Sticking a gyroscope into it will just unbalance it and take away the magic.

Anytime. Yeah, IS would be nice...but, so far, it's a nice lens...I like it a lot! :)

My problem with the suggestion that they might add IS is that it would likely add $500 to the price. Where it stands, I don't feel so bad having spent $935 on it, but at closer to $1500, I'd be tempted by the 85L.

Plus, as Pete said, I wouldn't want them messing with the magic the 135L can produce. When I search around on Flickr, so many images that stand out to me are 135L on a FF camera.

Maybe it'll just be a 135LII, but I can't see what they'd want to improve on this lens. Certainly the AF speed is extremely fast as it is now.

I only own two of the three you mentioned. However, I would not find them redundant, at all. Different lenses, for different purposes...and each one shines, in it's own right.

When a model sees an 85L attached to a rig, the expression on their faces is priceless...try changing that one up sometime.

Though, If you have a 200 you're 'giving away' I'll be more than happy to unload it from you. ;)

Yes, the ability of this lens to completely obliterate even a nearby background is incredible, if that's what you seek. I just can't get over the subject isolation that's possible with this lens, and I had already been impressed by my 85/1.8...but with this lens, it's a whole step beyond, IMO.

I posted a few of my recent model shots on the TS-e 45mm and 85IIL page. So I'll put a few 135L shot on here as well. I hope you like them :-D
All taken with available light (my style) on a 5DII or 5D.

Really love this shot but, maybe it's just me being anal, I'd crop/clone the protrusion in the top left and the window frame(?) in the top right.

...and if I'm being over-the-top anal, I'd want the front railing to be in focus, too.

Anywho, great work as usual!

Fair comment, but this isn't a club competition print and I'm not submitting it to win a judged contest. It's a true representation of the moment and placement that it was photographed in. I'm a photojournalist, and that mentaility carries over to my model work too. I limit corrections to WB and basic light room sliders. I use natural light and I don't use a flash. In fact I didn't direct this model at all....It's all her.

The story here is that the owner's location removed all of the paintings and pictures in their house so they could re-decorate, which was ideal for us to shoot agains the bare walls. So for me those wall tacks have a story to them.
As to the banister...well...lets just call that a DOF choice.

Gareth Cooper

I've learned that on this forum, we have very little choir to whom we can preach. I've discovered that it's even more unappreciated among some of the nature photographers who find that nature isn't perfect enough.

Just because? Don't get me wrong, I love the 135, but it's kind of a weird focal length and is sometimes a bit too long, and sometimes a bit too short. I don't think I could have it without the zoom, also. If I had to choose one, it'd be the zoom, sadly.

not that this lens needs anymore justification for ownership, but this thing makes ordinary objects seem like art. And, it doesn't matter whats behind the subject, it all gets destroyed anyway.

Thanks for all the compliments. I took several dozen photos while my friend Andrew climbed that route and almost all of them were winners. All of the elements came together except perhaps the slightly overcast afternoon lighting. If I could keep only one of my lenses it would without a doubt be the 135L.

As for that sense of fear/queasiness......I was definitely feeling it when I climbed it after my friend.

Thanks peter, i was just goofing around in the garage, looking for something to shoot with this lens as it doesn't get much use. After reviewing the images, I can't understand why I don't use this one more.

The 5d always impresses me with ability to use high ISOs. I did this one handheld too, after a deep breath and exhale, of course. :)

Thank you Rumble. If I remember correctly... 8-10 feet? I was concerned shooting at F/4 I wouldn't have enough of the face in focus.... I might have been just a touch closer... but... I think the distance is correct.

Thanks again,
