The 135mm is actually one of the cheapest L lenses you can get ;)
Ok the 200mm 2.8 is a little cheaper, but hey its 2.8 and not 2.0 :D

Hi guys, was in a popular Melbourne camera store for a 70-200 f/4L IS USM on Thursday. While there I had a quick peek at the 135L. Was told they only have 2 left in stock and it is "end of line". Most stores in Australia have been reporting similar news - no ETA on stock for the 135L. Anyway, I returned on Friday to get it. Last one!
Took some test shots last night around the apartment. Very sharp and love the bokeh but I do need to get used to no-IS. That with my shaky hands equates to a very low keeper rate. However I intend to practice, practice, and practice some more...

I just got the 135mm a couple of days ago and it is just as good as everyone say. I am really enjoying this lens. Here is one of my first pictures, of the moon. I took it handheld leaning at a wall, and cropted the picture 200%. I was totaly supriced to see how much details I got from the picture. I would love to do more pictures of the moon with a tripod next time. Taken with ISO 100, 1/800 at 5.6 with a 400d. It would be fun to see what a 15 MP or a FF would bring if they just take a photo of the moon with only the 135mm 2L.

In the UK, this year's model has a revised LED rear light cluster and it looks just plain ugly. The previous version (as designed by Ian MacCallum) is far more asthetically pleasing.

This shot right here has everything I'm looking for in a lens at this FL!!!!
I see you shot this with the 5DMKII and its wonderful with fantastic color, contrast, bokeh, and DOF...Great!!!!
My question is...Could you still pull off this shot if you were using your 40D? Well, I should ask how close could you get to this in regards to IQ?
I have a 40D and I'm not getting a FF for another year, hence the questions...
I would appreciate any advice you could share here or via PM!!!
Thanks as this shot has sealed the deal for me,... along with all the other spectacular ones here as well...

Thanks! Im sure I could get a similar shot, the dof would not be as nice. I could probably do it on my 40D with my 85L @ 1.2 to get a similar effect, just how close it would be, im not sure. I cant remember the last time I touched my 40ds.

Yeh, but I think some one pointed out that the bokeh looks better on the full frame =/
rnb2
24th of September 2009 (Thu), 23:41
Given the same framing, bokeh will be a bit smoother, and DOF a bit shallower, on a full-frame camera. The lens will work great with a 40D, regardless, but will perhaps be a bit too long to be useful in most indoor situations (depending on venue, of course).

Please be gentle. I've used the 135mm extensively on a 400D and 40D, but this was my first time shooting full frame. I don't think it'll find much time on the 400 or 40 after this experience!
The color, contrast, bokeh seem to be huge improvements on the full frame. The huge difference in focal lengths between true 135mm versus ~200mm was an adjustment to make.

From tonight, 26 Sep 09, a frog that slimes up every evening at my daughters' front door. Canon 5DM2, 135mm L , 50 percent crop, 270 flash with homemade bounce card, ISO 50, 1/60s @ f5.6 and -2.0 Ev. Some PP and USM.
Very nice. I love the color in the frog.

Honestly.... I used the 85L II and hands down... I found the 135 to be the winner(for me) 85 is slow to focus... love the speed of the 135.... it hardly comes off the camera. 85 is nice..... I'm sure you will enjoy it.
Nice shot btw.

I'll be sure to get it someday, just have to decide if I want to give something up to get it ;)

Cool. Ya although they are both fast primes, I believe they will serve vastly different purposes.
I'll write in here more when I get the 85 and test it out.

Hey, that's my rocket blower !!!
Nice shots ;)
Thanks.
Heh, the kid loved the thing so much it got to be a bit of a distraction for the shoot (felt almost like a commercial shoot for the rocket blower, instead of a portrait session).
As for the 85mm f/1.2... Very, very, very different lens and purpose. The AF is pretty darn slow and I'm not confident enough in my focusing skills to shoot wide open for events / crucial moments (I'll stop down to f/1.8-f/2 when I use it for wedding ceremony and special moments during the reception), but for posed shots or still life when I can afford to take my time, the 85mm f/1.2 has no peer in my collection.
The 135mm is no slouch though and far superior with its AF speed and the f/2 + 135mm focal length seems a much more forgiving combination than the f/1.2 + 85mm. It's provides enough reach and speed for capturing those perfect candids!

Here's one more, to continue the legacy of this lens. Sweet it is...that much I can say. I don't use it much, but, when I do, it's a stellar performer. 85L still makes it's way onto the camera body...so, I have to yell at it, and replace it with the 135L sometimes.
More of a fashion shot, as the wardrobe stylist wanted modern and edgy. ;)

I get that. I had a few steps in between where I didn't have a wide-angle, and now I ended up with an adapted Olympus Zuiko 24mm f/2.8. It really does do an awesome job, and only cost me $250 with an adapter.
That route can be a good one for people who don't use their UWA much. The Zuiko is smaller than a nifty fifty, well-built, and a nice performer. Not to mention it will be well under half the sale price of your 17-40!

I would seriously think long and hard about that. I've just got my 135L and it's a fantastic lens don't get me wrong but it's taking me a lot of time to get used to the FL. I would be lost without my 17-40 & 50 1.4

Im not too worried about the FL. I know ill be happy with it as i just recently went FF and the 135 will be like what my 85 was on my crop. I dont think i would miss my 50 1.4 at all as i dont really use that one either...i love my 35L and the difference between 35 and 50 is just the matter of me taking a step or 2 forward.
Now the 17-40 is what has me thinking...I hardly ever use it as i mostly do portrait work, and just cant get comfortable with UW, but its fall now and id like to try my hand at some landscape shots in the mountains with the leaves starting to change and all...maybe once i use it more ill start to like it???

Snowboarder top notch image.
^as the above UWA talk goes, I have the 50 85 135 combo now. Sold my 24-70 because I don't really use it enough to justify a 1000+ dollar lens for as little as I used it. I too am not much of a UWA angle user, but I'm not doing any events lately so I'm not worried about that. And I'm a rare breed when it comes to FL's anyways, I like my teles.
That being said I'm gonna buy another 17-40(had one awhile ago and was stupid and sold it).
SOOO don't sell your 17-40 and 50, you'll end up regreating it in the long run, but just remember the 135 (and 85L) are GREAT!
^Hey Kansas, could u PM me a link to some shots with your 24, wouldn't mind seeing them, thanks.

Snowboarder, that is an amazing capture!
Ooh, I have just bought back the 135L that I sold three months ago! Didn't think that would happen. :) I had convinced myself that 100/2 is equally good, because I prefer the focal length, but after some time I realized that "something" is missing. 100/2 is a fantastic lens, but when you have used lenses like 135L and 50L you're spoiled...
Just for fun I contacted the guy who bought mine and asked if he would be willing to sell it back to me, and to my big surprise he said yes! He now wants a longer tele and needs the money. We agreed on the same price, so at least I haven't lost any money in the process. :) This is the first time I have re-bought a sold lens, but it's also the only one I have really regretted selling.

If I were you I'd keep the 17-40, it's a great landscape lens as well as a good general use lens. I'd rent a 135L and see what you think. I just don't find it as 'general purpose' as a 50 or 85 but that's my own opinion.

I know it might be not an advise you're looking for, but it's much
more economical to buy good stuff right away instead of going through several
average lenses first and ending up buying what you've always wanted anyway :)
35L, 50L and 135L are just different than anything else, 85L is there, I had one,
didn't like it as much (too short and too long for me, also very heavy and very slow).
24L II is there too, but the first copy I got had way too much CA, so sent it back
