I know it might be not an advise you're looking for, but it's much
more economical to buy good stuff right away instead of going through several
average lenses first and ending up buying what you've always wanted anyway :)
35L, 50L and 135L are just different than anything else, 85L is there, I had one,
didn't like it as much (too short and too long for me, also very heavy and very slow).
24L II is there too, but the first copy I got had way too much CA, so sent it back
and looking for another copy to try.

You are right...
I am thinking of getting the alternatives of these lenses (well at least the 85mm 1.8, or i might just rent fro somewhere the real stuff :) ) and if i like the focal length i will probably save up for all of them. I just love primes :D

kansascityshuffle: I'd personally like it more if it were entirely in black and white, the selective colouring does nothing for me, to be honest

Booja: Love the tones on the second one!

Here's a shot from today, apparently the 135L does macro too!

I have no idea what he's referring to but as a person with borderline OCD the 1 pixel of horizontal black at the bottom of the picture bugs me since it's not there on any of the other border edges. ;) Great shot though -- you're representing the lens well.

Many thanks and I have to say I am sorry for the 1px black. You see... I was tired/lazy and I pasted the shots back in to a frame. I have an action I wrote... but.. it is on the old PC... new build doesn't have it... anyway... lol:D

One more with the 135... love this lens... again... sorry for the 1px... this has it as well. LOL

Ahhh, now it makes sense.

As for the 5D...I do miss it, at times. It was rather easy to use, and I knew it well. Now, with the 1Ds2, I'm still learning to use it day by day, but, I've become comfortable with the 5D's bigger brother.

I will edit some 5D pics, as soon as possible and post them up. How does that sound?

How was your trip Stateside? Hope you enjoyed your time here.

Don't miss me...I've not gone anywhere. :o

Lookin' forward to some shots from you, with your reacquired lens. ;)

Thanks Manish! Yes, that sounds great. :) Glad you are getting comfortable with your 1Ds2 though.

We had a great time in USA. So much to see and do!

Regarding 135L: The deal fell through. The guy emailed me yesterday and said that he has changed his mind and wants to keep it. To be completely honest contacting him was an impuls and I'm almost relieved now. Afterall, there was a reason to why I sold it in the first place; the focal length. If you don't like the focal length it doesn't help if the lens is the best in the world. I guess I'll try and make do with the 100/2 for now.

inthedeck
8th of October 2009 (Thu), 08:25
I agree, Helena. One thing I would consider, if you like the 100mm focal length, is the new 100 f/2.8 L IS unless, of course, you like the face that you have an extra stop on the 100 f/2.

Glad you enjoyed your trip. :) I'll sift through some threads, to see your work. ;)

Helena
8th of October 2009 (Thu), 09:07
Hmmm... That's a thought. I'm not really into macro though. A really good MF lens could also work. We'll see. :)

inthedeck
8th of October 2009 (Thu), 09:16
Just take a look at the thread for the new lens. You'll see it not only does macro, and provides 4 stops of IS for 'non-macro' work, in addition to the two stops, for macro work. ;)

I'm very happy with this lens. I told my wife I nicknamed the lens "Baby".
The nickname comes from a line in the movie Dirty Dancing.

Nice capture! I haven't taken my 135L to the zoo yet. It looks like it could be fun.

Thank you, sir.
The last time I went to the zoo, I used my 70-200 exclusively, so I figured I could make the 135 mm focal length work for all the captures.

If you all don't mind ? ...... I'll post a photo that shows the initial confrontation, and explains the ring-tailed lemur leap.

wim, I'd burn in the leaf in the middle, and dodge the flower a bit. Other than that, nice colors, and use of the red against muave/purple. ;)

Thanks, and thank you for the tip. Effectively I have done that already, by using a strong S-curve for the exposure correction. I didn't like a stronger effect myself, because the leaf is not sharp, and because the flower really stood out, and less doesn't feel right to me either :D. BTW, just for scale: the maple leaves were about 3 cm /1.2 inch in size - the flowering plant is growing through the canopy of one of my bonsai trees :D.

Kind regards, Wim

The main secret is to water them plenty, twice a day in hot conditions, to a little once every second day in temperate climate winter conditions. And they need to be kept outside, maybe a week a year indoors, at most, when in leaf. Before it gets below 5 degrees outside, they have to be moved indoors, temperatures below 14 degrees centigrade (14 degrees and higher and the plant stops being dormant), unless they are tropical plants: those need higher temps, and likely need to be moved indoors sooner, and need extra light.

Kind regards, Wim

Manish, I think I just noticed what you meant. I did a quick&dirty on my laptop, am on the road again this week, and when I position the screen such that the screen is brightest, it is indeed a little overexposed. I'll have a look and see if I can get it to look like it was intended. From a slight angle it looks perfect, but straight on it is indeed too light.

Kind regards, Wim
