Can somebody do me a favor?
Can you check to see if your Canon ET-78II Lens Hood for this lens
has the plastic spring clips on either side, inside.
I let my best friend use the lens and it was fine.
I tried it today and the lens hood is really hard to take on and off. My other lens hoods have the clips but this one does not.
I hoping that is the problem.
I just want to make sure the clips are suppose to be there
before ordering one for $43.95. Jeez!!!
Thanks in advance.

No spring clips on mine as you describe it, Max. All my other hoods have those two little tabs in there though. This one is snug, some may say tight, but it comes off w/o any difficulty.

Yeap, no clips here, either. Just notches in the hood/lens. Unlike the 85L which is a spring clip mechanism. Wish every hood had that.

Yes, I used to own a 40D and a 85mm 1.8.. and there is no comparison possible imo other than focal lenght!
The bokeh on a fullframe is much more appealing and strong v.s the bokeh from a 1.6x, mainly because the sensor is bigger I think.
Also, the quality of the color and contrast coming from the 135L is just amazing.

Though this picture was taken last night, i played with it this morning, and i think that f2 is the max ill go... i dont think ill ever go back to f2.8 unless its the 300 f2.8 and above. (which i doubt ill get because i dont need the FL).

From today, in daughter's backyard, her new puppy. This was shot with the 5DM2 and 135mm L. ISO 400, 1/400s @ f5. This is a crop to one third of the image, then the second crop is to the 100 percent level. No USM.

I'm still having a strong mental debate if I should get the 135L or the new 100 2.8L macro. On one hand the features of the macro is appealing, on the other hand the pictures in this thread is so awesome I can't stop looking at them over and over again. I hope someone will post a picture soon that will just push me over the edge and make me buy one ;) Great work guys!

I was thinking this, get the Macro. (I own both).
A month ago I would of said the 135L but I love the Macro shots, very rewarding.
Apart from the focal length difference you lose the dreamy look the 135L gives wide open....but you get Macro and IS with the other. A no brainer.
You 'could' also buy a used 40D and turn the Macro into a 160mm Macro with IS, turn that 50mm of yours into an 85mm and the 24-105L into a 35-160mm too.

Have a look a the bokeh the two produce... from the sample shots I have seen of the new 100mm macro... it looks just like the old 100mm macro and having owned the lens.. and loving it... the 135L blows it out of the water IMO.
If you need the IS... might be a good move. The 100mm is sharp...as it should be for a macro lens. But... the 135L has a "quality" to it like the 85L or the 35L.... just a fantastic lens all around. Super sharp...even at F/2.0...very fast to focus... great bokeh.
Just my $.02.... unless you are shooting bugs... and need IS... I would go for the 135L :)

It's a great lens...I really like it. It's smallish, so it travels well. I can use it for things like indoor gymnastics and outdoor soccer. The 135 is a bugger to find....haven't checked availability on the 100 2.8. It should really come down to what you want to do with the lens. The new macro has IS.....I've gotten to be a huge fan of IS. 100 2.8 should be fast enough to blow out the background for portrait work if you plan to do more than take pictures of bugs:) Again, the IS can help with that if you're going to hand hold. The 135 is that much faster, and a little longer....but you're not going to get good pictures of bugs:) It's hard not to get sucked into the pictures on the threads....believe me, I've 'fallen' a few times as a result of these blasted threads....but in the end, if you look through the thread for the 50 1.8 there will be plenty of shots in that thread that will look similar to the shots in this thread. Your best bet on the decision on those two is some thought as to what you're going to be shooting the most of.....and then buy the lens that best accomplishes that task......and I don't think you'll go wrong with either choice.

Thanks for the input guys... I'm not really a big fan of macro pictures, other than my girlfriend really likes me to shoot some flowers now and then, but the IS is very tempting, after I've gotten used to it on my 24-105.
However, I have reasonably steady hands, and the 135mm is compatible with the 1.4x which would really extend my total focal length range. I also have the 3 piece Kenko extension tube set, which I use for close-up emergencies...
Getting a used 40D is out of the question though, as I hate getting more gear I have to lug around for no good reason other than getting a lot of attention ;p
And finally, the 100L macro looks plain ugly to be frank. But tempting nonetheless in its versatility.
However, I think I will stay with the 135L, given that I can find it when I go to China in Febraury.

Mine's was a bit stiff, then I applied some "nose grease" (sounds minging, but rub your finger down the outside of one of your nostrils, rub same finger on the hood-mount grooves on both the hood and lens and voila: smooth hood action! :D) — I can't really believe I've just typed this!

right but does your click after hitting the end of the turn? my other lens and hood, when i put the hood on, i would feel the tension of the hood on the lens as i turn it, then at the end, it click into place. there is none of that tension or click with my 135 hood so i'm wondering if its normal. thanks

The hood doesn't click with the same solidity as my other L lenses, but clicks in better than the hood for my 50/1.4. I've seen comments about the hood in other forums, I think that poor hood fit seems par for the course with this lens. I'll forgive it for the optics! :)

The Canon ET-78II Lens Hood doesn't have those clips that most Canon hoods have.
I had an issue last week in that mine was very tight getting it on and off.
Those clips probably cause the "click" you mention.
I don't know why this hood is different.

Something I had not previously done with the 135 L, I attached a 1.4 TC II to the lens on my 1DM3. EXIF reports 189mm. In this image the ISO was 1600. I let program do its thing, but I changed the Ev to -1.33 to prevent highlight burnout. This exposure of horse and rider is 1/250s @ f3.5.
The second shot is without the TC. Still ISO 1600, and fairly close to the subject. 1/125s @ f2. A lot of movement so some is sharp and most is not, but I like the capture.
I guess my eyes are getting old. In more than one shot what looked in focus in the viewfinder was not when I saw it on screen--even shots where I took my time--things in the distance, in the dark, are just too hard to get right--trouble is the camera doesn't seem to like the dark any better. Sharpness of subjects under colored gel light don't fare well either for the autofocus. I won't bother to post my failures--it's enough to know that they get more frequent.

Great shots, nonetheless, Advaitin!
And to be very honest, with these light levels, all the movement going on, and relatively slow shutter speeds, it is extremely hard to get a sharp shot - I should know.
I have gone to shooting at 6400 iso a lot lately ... :D

I have thought seriously--VERY seriously--on multiple occasions about selling the 70-200 f/2.8. It's a fantastic lens, and very flexible, but it's also big, heavy, expensive, and the 135L is just sooooooooooo good.
However, until I can shoot a few weddings trying out the 135 in place of the 70-200, I can't get rid of the zoom.

I don't really consider it "wide" on the 1D. And even though I like the 35L on the 5D a lot, it's a good focal length on the 1D because it's a little tighter. My 24-70 on the 1D puts things a little wider, even though the field of view is not the traditional full frame 24mm field of view.

The 85 1.8 is definitely a good lens but I sold mine....not entirely because of the 135L. Acquiring a Sigma 50 1.4 played a part too.

I own both, and the Sigmalux, and none of them are going anywhere. They complement each other quite well. 135L is the best of the bunch, but often too tight of a FL for what I want to do. 50mm is great for "everything" shots; IOW it's very versatile when things might be a bit tight (events). 85mm is great for mid-range telephoto, street shooting, etc., but there's more context in the frame than the 135L. 135mm is great when you want that intimacy, head-and-shoulders or just head portraiture. It also excels at full-body shots from a distance, and subject isolation at any range.
That said, I generally leave the house with only one of those primes, as I hate carrying a bag. I make a guess as to what I'll be shooting, and choose a lens. If there's likely to be a lot of scenery, or tight crowds, it's 50mm. If it's probably looser distance-to-subject (street) shooting, 85mm. And if it's a big event with spread-out people, 135mm. Or just strap on the 135 and make it work! :) It's that good, IMO. ;)

Just looked at your flickr. You've got some really nice work there.
I think you'll put both lenses to good work. I see you're a fan of narrow DoF, and both of those lenses have some of the finest (IMO) bokeh you can get in AF lenses for EF mount.

Hey everyone! I was wondering how many of you use the 135L on a crop body? More specifically 40D's. I'm debating on whether this lens is worth pairing with the 40d since the lens would be roughly 216mm on a crop body. It seems like everyone using this lens is pairing it up with a FF body.

Probably my least used lens, but only because of the FL. It is typically brilliant. Check my Flickr for higher res versions: http://www.flickr.com/photos/ken2000ac/

Love this shot.
Thank you. It was my wife's idea for me to pull over on the A6 into Paris to snap this shot. We printed this shot in a 36 x 24 and hung it over our couch so I suppose the risk to life and limb was worth it.

It's geotagged on my Flickr page, but it was taken from atop the Montparnasse Tower in central Paris, east of the Eiffel Tower. There are no lines to gain access and the entry fee is far cheaper than the Eiffel. I preferred the view as well. :)

haha, that's a great shot. As far as the 135 and 100...I'd probably go with the 100 for the macro ability and IS. They're both tack sharp and around the same price. The 135 is a hair faster...idk how much that matters to you though.
