Just bought this lens. Some of my first images. I like it, but I think it requires some time to get used to the focal lenght. I feel more comfortable with the 35L. :)

The 135L takes a 1.4x converter very well, making it an effective 189/2.8. Once I realized that, I chose the 135 over the 200/2.8L.
Otherwise, they are very similar lenses.

This is what I'm thinking.. I going to order the 135mm f/2 in the New Year..
I'll team it up with my Tamron SP AF 1.4X TC (the white model) which is very sharp, when I need more reach..
The 135mm f/2 will be a killer combination on my 50D..

I have a short stop over in Bangkok on the 3rd January but not long enough to to leave the airport..
I'll order the 135mm off ebay.. I have a few great sellers out of Hong Kong I've been dealing with for a few years..

Anyone notice bad purple fringing as per my post on the last page? Really curious as I was quite startled to see it that bad on this lens!
Christmas Day has been super mellow with a day on the ocean, some diving, a few beers and temps only reaching 37C - pretty darned near perfect except for no time/inclination to play with this lens LOL

All the images are outstanding. However, it seems most of these are taken with a FF camera. Anyone have the same image taken with the 135L on a FF as well as a crop? I would like to see if there is a drastic difference.

This entire posting is all about the 135L lens, and the photos it produces. You might want to search POTN lens sample photo archive to see if there are postings for the 100 f/2. I did a quick search and found this: http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=226590&highlight=EF+100+f%2F2+USM

Here is a photo of some flowers in front of the house. I was renting the 135 2.0 for a track and field meet, but had a lot of fun taking these photos in the late afternoon.
Shot wide open, 1/200, ISO 200 on a 20D. This is one of my favorite photos, mainly because my now dead red Chevy Cavalier Z-24 forms an interesting background for the flowers. Thanks for looking...I am still very new to posting.

I'm on the urge of getting this lens but I'm just afraid that it is too long on a crop. For those who has used this lens on a crop, how far do you have to stand for a head and shoulder shot like the first pic?

35L and 135L would be a great combo. I have the 1DIII and 5D and live just outside the city. I can't imagine why I'd bring the 1DIII instead of the 5D. Why are you considering it? Especially since you're going to want the true wider angle of the 35L. You're not going to need the tracking or AF benefits of the 1D, which is mainly where it exceeds the 5D. Plus, the 1D will attract a lot more attention.

Neither--I don't have a 5D2! ;) Those were taken with the 5D classic. The 1.3x crop factor isn't huge, so using it on the 1D3 isn't incredibly different--you just have to take a few more steps back. I don't know that I've ever used it on a 1.6x crop (even when I had one), so I can't speak to that. Seems to me it would be too tight on a 1.6x crop for portraits, but it might be useful for other stuff, like sports.

+1, but I'd be tempted to take the 1D3 anyway... just such a good camera, and it's not THAT much bigger. That said, I'd probably bring the 5D for the same reasons above.

I would love to have this lens, but I have a 100mm f/2.8 macro already (which is good for everything else, too), so I don't think I really need it. But those pictures, man. I love browsing this thread. Keep them coming!

Benefits of the 135L are...faster focusing...color/contrast...and the bokeh is days better than the 100mm macro. Don't get me wrong... I'm a huge fan of the 100mm macro... but... the 135L is a step up IMO.

Is the 135 a Wildlife Lens? Here's a shot the first time out with my 1.4x extender. It blew away my EF 70-300 f/4-5.6 IS, even in poor light with IS on. Shot at f/4, 1/200 with steady hands only. I love this lens! No I just need to get back to Woody's nest to get some better shots of him!

I just bought this lens for shooting pets and urban animals and from the looks of it I made the right choice now I am just worried about my skills :(

Uh oh - just like imtrashed above, how dare you post a 135 f/2L shot with more than 1/16 of an inch of depth of field? I'm just kidding of course - this is such a versatile lens and has the most amazing color and contrast, without losing resolution. I like the contrast of the warm tones on the wood and sunlit snow against the cool shade.

Has anyone been using their EF135mm f/2 with a 1.4x TC??
Yes, check out the woodpecker a page or two back. That was my first time out with the combo and it works very well. I did a lot of test shots as well and other than the obvious DOF differences, I only see the slightest difference in sharpness and contrast between F/2.8 and f/4+. I think f/2.8 is perfectly acceptable if needed and f/4 good enough for just about anything.
I'll try to shoot with the combo some more this weekend...
yogestee
13th of January 2010 (Wed), 09:38
Thanks Mack.. I'll be ordering the 135mm f/2 in a few weeks.. Having close to 200mm (189mm) at f/2.8 with a 1.4X TC looks appealing as a stand by.. On my 50D and 20D thats equivalent to 300mm f/2.8 in the old money..
mackguyver
13th of January 2010 (Wed), 09:54
It doesn't seem to be as sharp or contrasty as the 200 2.8 but is certainly a low cost way to boost the usefulness of the 135 and adds enough distance to be useful.
