You may be able to squeeze some more sharpness out of it by doing the AF Micro adjustment.

I'm not entirely certain it's needed on my bodies (which is great!) But I will test it regardless.

I replied on your other thread too, didnt notice it was the same. Its not so much about appeal as it is, similarity. The 135L and 85 are very similar in focal length. With a little work you can take almost the same photo with with an 85 or 135. Keep in mind the more direct comparison with the 135L is the 85L.

Just add extension tubes, indeed, and an extender 1.4X, and after that a TS-E 17 :D. Then you're set. The same set I carry with me all the time, actually :D ;).

He's on crop, so the 85 and 135 is not as close, when factoring in the crop value. I'd stick with 85mm focal length on crop cameras. 135 is really getting out there.

Well my theory is that 28 will give me a normal FOV, 85 will give me a medium-tele Fov, and 135 will give me tele fov and a 1.4x extender for more reach. I can always zoom with my feet and this covers everything I use since I dont use wide very much.

Its true that you can get that you can get the same FOV if you take 5 steps forward with the 85, but the 135L has much nicer background diffusion due to compression. There's no replacing the 135L in any lineup. I've had mine for a week and I'm a believer! :D

He's on crop, so the 85 and 135 is not as close, when factoring in the crop value. I'd stick with 85mm focal length on crop cameras. 135 is really getting out there.

There's no such thing as getting "out there." I think the 85 and 135 FL compliment each other nicely. There's a fairly noticeable FL gap between the two on FF and crop. If someone is worried about the 135L being too long, they can always do the 50mm and 100 f/2 combo. The 100 f/2 is a hidden gem ;)

Well my theory is that 28 will give me a normal FOV, 85 will give me a medium-tele Fov, and 135 will give me tele fov and a 1.4x extender for more reach. I can always zoom with my feet and this covers everything I use since I dont use wide very much.

If you're on crop, the 85 will be more of a tele. 85mm x 1.6 crop = 136mm. Therefore its like a 135 on FF. If you want a prime that will give you a mid-tele, you should look into a 50mm.

How does being on a crop make the ratio between 85 and 135 different? They are just as close to each other in field of view as they would be on FF. Granted they are different on a crop, but still the same field of view relative to each other..

guyzer09
8th of September 2010 (Wed), 00:24
the distance from 85-135 is just about the same as 28-85, 50mm vs 57mm. It might be on an impulse but I think I am going to go ahead and do it. If it doesnt work out I can always sell it or do another trade. I hope it will give me the same wow factor as the 85 and the photos I see here on this thred!

Let's say you are taking a portrait, and want to keep the subject the same size in frame. The steps needed to achieve that would be greater on crop. So on FF let's pretend it would take ten steps backwards between 85-135, to keep the subjects size on frame equal. On crop I figured it would be more than ten steps (all made up numbers) as everything is multiplied by 1.6. To keep it in FF equivalent terms, I'm hypothesizing it would take less physical steps backwards to go from 85mm - 135mm (and keep your subject size the same) than it would to go from 136mm to 216mm

Regardless of the steps, which doesnt change my point, if they were similar in perspective on a crop, they would be on a full frame. You are arguing that the 85 might be a better option on a crop, but the difference between the lenses stays the same regardless of format.

And in this case it is appropriate - sets the context through the specific location, or general location mood. Nicely done. You are getting progressively better each time with your outdoor portraits.

Hey Butchie...how come your old AE1 looks so pristine apart from a bit of missing paint on the end. Mine is dented, scratched and has the odd missing screw, but it still goes! Mind you, mine has done 20K sea miles as well as 25 years of roughing it...I bought it in 1985 at 47th St. Camera in NY.

It was my first SLR as a teenager... I "babied" that thing like there was no tomorrow... Although there are several marks at the bottom, film close side (pictured), and battery compartment, overall it's still in fantastic cosmetic condition (and fully functional)... Like yourself, I received my AE-1 in 1985, but as a high school graduation present from my parents...

I was working on the Routeburn Track, deep in the mountains, back in 1973 when the peace was disturbed first by a couple of Skyhawks, then this bloody great Vulcan that flew up the valley and had to turn and climb to clear the Harris Saddle. I saw the top of the plane as he turned, and the noise was terrific. I was totally blown away and so annoyed my camera wasn't at hand.
The Vulcan is a totally unique plane, in a class of it's own when it come to heavy bombers I believe.

It is really quite special to see - the noise alone is something quite unique. Its a sort of hollow 'ghostly' noise mixed with jet engine roar.

Boy I was trying to get more of them in the shot! I used a sand colored fountain as the set and I was just shooting hand-held, didn't have a tripod with me. I shot wide-open at first and all you could see was a smear of gold and white haha! This was at f/8!! The Jawas were only separated by maybe a foot from C-3PO and R2-D2, but they were right at MFD which is probably what caused the massive separation.

I'll plan on reshooting it and bring my tripod this time so I can keep my ISO at 100 instead of 800.

Thank you for the compliment though :D

Hey it's me! haha tried to do a self-portrait today. Kind of a heavy crop, but it was at f/8 so everything was in focus anyways ;)

Great images everyone! can't wait to start using this lens! I have not found the opportunity to use it yet because the weather here has been crappy. I was starting to steer away from L lenses cause I couldn't justify the cost but I just had to get my hands on this one.
