how did you handheld for such a slow shutter speed and got a sharp photo? (slower than the rule-of-thumb 1/focal length)

how did you handheld for such a slow shutter speed and got a sharp photo? (slower than the rule-of-thumb 1/focal length)

Well according to another thread I must be lucky...

Seriously though the first one is hand held standing in the middle of a room at 1/45th. All I did was use the typical good stance technique with my legs spread in front and behind me, arms tucked in to brace then squeeze the camera slowly (more of a tightening of the grip on the shutter) to avoid as much movement as possible. It's how I always shoot, so even if I'm not using a slow shutter or if I accidentally do I'll still get OK shots...

For the second one I had realized I was in Tv for some reason (set to 1/45th?) so I switched to Av and set it to f/2.0. That bumped the shutter to 1/60th and I also leaned against a wall. I still tucked my arms in and squeezed the shutter instead of pressing it though.

Slow shutter speeds are possible. Get as much help as you can from your surroundings and your stance. Obviously I would have shot at 1/125th or more if I could, but it's low light, you deal with what you can. Before IS this was the only way to do things. Now with IS you can get an IS lens as needed (I love it on my 300mm f4) but I won't avoid a lens as great as this because it doesn't have it. This lens is also very well "balanced" to me. It seems easier to hand hold than say a 70-200mm f/2.8.

Hope that helps.
Ben

(I realize the difference in range, I have the 70-200 f4; I'm looking for really good IQ and also low light performance at receptions)

Objections.
What body do you have, if crop 1.6 go with 17-55 or 24-70 or even 70-200 f2.8.
if full body or 1.3 then again go with 24-70 or 70-200 f2.8, or 50 1.4 if so, i know this lens is amazing but you will use your feet a lot in weddings if you use 135L.

Incredible images from this lens! Question: how big of an issue is it handholding this baby? It's obviously very sharp wide open so that helps tremendously.

Not trying to dampen the deserving praise for this lens but I rarely use a tripod and wonder about the non-IS. Thanks.

It's light (750g). It's not the monster that other wide primes are. Very similar in weight to a 24-105 or 24-70. I could hand-hold this lens and hike with it all day long, no problem.

My shot was handhold, i never used this lens on tripod yet and i will never use tripod if i keep my shutter speed about 1/60 and faster.

Question: how big of an issue is it handholding this baby?

depends on your hand holding skills... If you have good technique you can easily get to 1/60th, and even 1/45th... I don't consider myself very stable and have been shooting at 1/60th w/o any issues at all. It's size/weight just make it very easy to hand hold which is nice. It's much easier to handhold than my 70-200 was.

Thanks Tareq - I have a 5D and will get another one. Guess this is the wrong thread for this, though...

Did you decide on a lens? I've been thinking the same thing about weddings. The 70-200 2.8 is just too heavy for me, I wobble it too often.

How would you say this lens compare with the 85 1.8? And don't say 50mm ;).
In terms of bokeh, sharpness, contrast, etc?

What I like of it is the focal distance on the 5D...

is a mid point between the 85 mm and the 70-200..I fyou need more reach; couple steps do the trick.

It's sharp wide open...the 1.8 is not...the 1.8 is alright
faster focusing way faster than the 1.8
Better colors
Better IQ
Better Bokeh.
Better contras... and No too expensive.

Poor phrasing, f/14-22.

That's going to be unusual.

Also, in that range diffraction softening will be a player. Put another way....the $900 EF 135/2 and the $200 Sigma 70-300/4-5.6 APO will look pretty much the same between f/14 and f/22.

If you plan to shoot a telephoto lens stopped down into the diffration limited range then you can save a lot of money and just buy consumer grade lenses.

and why i saw many many landscapes shots in that diffraction f-stops?

JeffreyG

and why i saw many many landscapes shots in that diffraction f-stops?

If you need the DOF then you stop down as far as you must to get it. Diffraction softening will always be a secondary consideration after getting the scene in focus.

But 135mm lenses are long, and not often used in the sense of a landscape scene where there are subjects both near and far from the camera. In the cases where such a shot is desired then the lens will need to be stopped down.

So final point - if all you shoot is landscapes and you plan to shoot the 135L always stopped down past f/11.....IMO you can easily get the same results from much cheaper lenses.

When you buy a telephoto L prime you are usually paying for a fast lens that performs very well wide open. By f/11 an L prime and a cheapo zoom are going to be pretty darn close in performance

Excellent pictures, Tobiah and Alycia. You must be a very proud mom. :)
The last pic is very funny, nice candid.

Great shots in this archive, no doubt about it.

I'm contemplating selling my 70-200/4, and investing in this piece of fine glass. Has anyone here made a similar move?

I sold my 70-200 2.8 IS for this lens and the 35L. It was the right choice for me.

I had the Sigma 70-200 2.8 and I sold it in order to pick up the 135L. One of the best moves I have made.
