I just applied for a local economic development grant here in my city and was approved after putting together a thorough business plan, as well as cash flow summaries and a couple interviews. 3000$ towards my photography business, and I NEVER have the responsibility to pay it back! Not saying that every city or state has this opportunity but there are definitely way's out there of making your dream become a reality you just have to be serious enough about it and go for it.

With this being said who knows maybe I'll make nothing this summer, or maybe I'll make a livable salary....either way i would never have known unless I tried, and now I'm SUPER pumped to make it happen.

You clearly have the skill to at least know what your doing in the technical side of things, now it's just a matter of mating it with some business knowledge and entrepreneurial commitment. I'm sure your answer will be that you already have an established career or something already on the go, but nothing says you don't have time to set up something part time professionally doing work.

I dunno, just my .02 cause I found myself asking....myself, the same thing all the time haha. Now I'm going to try it!

You can easily create a sole proprietorship and start a business. Just got to pay some taxes. If you can get a partner you can create an LLC and get good insurance and some tax stuff. It costs a little more but if you're serious about it then I would do it for sure.

I think people tend to build up the whole "starting your business" thing to much when it comes to photography. I'll state that I went to school for business for three years in University before changing focus to graphic design so I am not talking out of my ass in terms of the on-paper side of the business. The photography industry is one of the most forgiving industries for the "extremely talented hobbyist" to become a "professional". Reason being is that most of the guys I see here on threads like "Whats your gear, and what do you do with it?" have insane amounts of talent, insane amounts of nice equipment and then state......hobbyist. Which there is NOTHING WRONG WITH THAT, lol before grassroots hobbyist in the thread kill me, BUT with that being said this is the perfect position to be in if you ever did want to make an attempt at making some money would it not?

Your equipment costs are already covered assuming the shooter has nice gear EVEN as a hobbyist, your over head costs are what? You don't have to worry about food going bad on the shelves of your store if people don't buy, you don't have to worry about paying employees that are standing around but not producing work for you, most photographers don't have to worry about "rent" for their business as you cannot really account for your mortgage on your house counting as business expense as this is a personal necessity before a business requirement if you already have a job and an established lifestyle.

Now don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that anyone would be smart to just drop their career as an accountant and attempt to make a living off of photography just because "the overhead costs are low" but photography is definitely one of the few skilled artisan crafts that can be done coinciding with a full time responsibility. If you have to much on your plate as it is, clearly a business is not for you, but if you have time to spend, the equipment to shoot, and the skill to put smile on customers faces everything else like reaching your target market successfully and building a clientele can all be accomplished over time.



P.S. Brennan in no way was this a rebuttal to your statement, as I believe you would agree with a lot of what I said. I just pointed out this certain "stigma" i see stated a lot by people of "starting a business". The word business means a lot of different things in a lot of different professions to a lot of different people in my opinion and I think the real definition tends to be washed away.

Interesting, I had one other photographer I shoot weddings with but she has no plans to make it a full time thing which I want.

Bingo! I'm still getting my name out there and I'm currently building a more steady portfolio with recent work but finding consistant work is hard especially with me working 50hrs/6 days a week at my current job. I book the shoots after work, shoot on my only day off and edit before/after work. I'm really trying to push for the start of next year to go full time but I've got a lot of things to do before then.

Thanks! I'm building my fashion/glamour/editorial port right now to try and get in with some local modeling companies so it was a TFCD and met her on MM. I've got a couple more shoots over the next few weeks with more local models from MM.

Hey X, I am debating between the 85 and 135 and would like to know what it is that is making you use the 85 more.

I just want to say I HATE ALL OF YOU GUYS for contributing to this thread :)

I rented this baby out for a photoshoot this morning and mounted on my 60D it became a lot more trickier to shoot with this lens.

Here's one shot SOOC, converted from RAW and resized for web using DPP and this is the result!

Ahh the 85L! I guess it will be the last of the portrait trinity lens I'll be buying. I'm going with the 135L and 35L combo for the time being and will add 85L sometime in the future! ;)

i'm simply kind, and honest with my project and ask if they would let me take their photo.

simple as that - just be nice, smile, and be very approachable when you ask them.
