Hah! Yeah, might've been me..! That's right outside my office, I get to there ~ 7AM, and I was shooting that on Friday around 7:45AM on my way to a doctor's appt. I'm doing a project 365, so every few days I'll bring the camera to work and get some shots around the loop.

Anyone using extension tubes on this? I dont' feel like renting a 24-70L or 100 macro for the wedding season and My current lineup isn't exactly the best for ring shots unless I crop heavily.

I have the Kenko tube set used with the 135 and works great you'll be able to use it for ring shots.

You mean me? At 1024 it isn't very noisy at all, at a full export it is surprisingly noisy and no where near as sharp. In fact, when I exported the full image I thought LR was broken as I didn't see the noise at 1024 or even in LR.

I see what you mean...very odd! It looks just like reticulation used to on film...if you stuffed it around too much!
I must say I haven't seen noise like that before...someones else may have some experience with it....

I never seen it before either, got it with a lot of the images in this set. At 1024 they look good but at full export they have a lot of this noise, and that wasn't even a bad one.

Question to owners of EF 135mm F2L lens. I am planning to get an outdoor portrait lens for my canon 5d. But i can't decide between the 85mm 1.8 and a 135mm f2L. Last one is 2.5 times more expensive but is very well regarded on a FF body as well, however I am not sure on that 135mm focal length, isn't it too long? i'm afraid it could be a little inconvenient to shoot with. Maybe there are owners of both of these lenses, please comment on this, which one works better for you? thanks!

It's only a couple steps backwards, that's all you really need to think of it as. I've been pleasantly surprised with the quality of shots I've been getting with my 135 on a 5Dc since the day I got it.

I had the 85mm f/.8, I hated it. It is a very popular lens but even after calibration I could never get it to shoot sharp under f/4 which made it useless to me. I got the 135mm f/2 this Friday and the thing is amazing, razor sharp at f/2! Love this lens.

then another question, i've seen many people on these forums have 85mm f1.2 L and 135mm f2L at the same time.. but if 135mm focal length is not an issue outdoors and can easily be handled, then why get the 2k$ 85mm ? i mean they are designed for same purpose - outdoors shallow depth photography. I can't afford 10 L lenses, so i plan to get 1 for outdoors and 1 for indoors. That's why i ask.

I was playing around a bit with focal length testing last night on a 5d2. Had a Tamron 28-75 out to 75 and was getting most of my daughter sitting in a chair about 5 feet from me. I took the 135 and put in on and was getting more of a head and shoulders/torso. Outdoors with room to move this is great.

I've not had problems with the 85 like just mentioned, I've found it to be stellar in the IQ but just haven't been able to 'keep' it. I really wanted to pick it up again...great lens. I found I use my 50mm most. I on occasion want wider, but for length, the 135 has been working. Couldn't convince myself that I would use the 85 enough between the 50 and 135 to pull the trigger again.

They're not necessarily made for the same purpose. In my opinion, the 135L is the ideal outdoor portrait lens (or if you have a large studio, an indoor portrait lens), whereas he 85L is an engineering marvel to be able to let SO much light in at such a focal length, it's more suited for low-light wedding and journalistic use. For outdoor use on full frame, the 85mm focal length may be suited better for full-lengths, whereas the 135 (or 85 on a crop) is better for half body/head shots.

Also, I'm not sure if you've ever tried shooting at 1.2 outdoors on a sunny day. Even at ISO100 and 1/8000, it can be extremely difficult to get a proper exposure.

If you're limiting yourself to two L's for indoor and outdoor on full frame, I'd highly suggest a 50L and 135L (or 30 and 85 on a crop). Even then, I LOOOVE the 50L outdoors. It does beautiful things to the background. Check out the 50L thread.

Just my 2 cents...

+1 on this post. The 135L is legendary, but, can be a tad bit too long for indoor uses most of the time unless the place your shooting inside is large.

85mm FL is a far more balanced FL for indoor and outdoor use. That being said if you know you will be shooting in open spaces and you don't need the extra stop that the 85LII provides (again can be very handy indoors) then the 135L IMO is the better lens simply by its AF.

The other thing I did notice from 135mm to 85mm is that at 135mm camera shake becomes much more pronounced compared to 85mm.

Another note on the 135L worthy of mentioning is that it takes the 1.4x TC very well. With that setup you have a 189mm F/2.8 lens as well with minimal IQ loss or AF loss. So its more versatile in that sense.

Personally I think (and I might get blasted for this) the 135L is the better lens over the 85LII. The 85LII just happens to have the more versatile focal length.

If Canon ever makes a 135L IS... I will sell my left kidney to buy it. Now that would be my go to lens in large venues and outdoors for ever.

No, not pushed at all, exposure was almost dead on. I only noticed it this weekend, I haven't done more testing but seemed like a lot of the images were like that and only change I really know of is that I unlocked 1/3rd ISO steps instead of full stops only which is what I typically shoot.

Some love it. It isn't very sharp wide open and exhibits focus shift between f/2 and about f/4 (when dof covers the problem) when shooting at close range.

I had a 35L and a 135L - did this photoshoot (http://www.philhackettphotography.com/jessica) with just those two lenses.

Recently I've picked up Sigma 50 & 85mm f/1.4 lenses and I'm very happy with those - I find they include more background to put the subject in context while still offering great seperation.

He certainly saw me taking photos of his stand, not sure if he knew I was taking some of him. Candids can be tricky, there's a few ways to approach it. If I really see someone interesting and want to take a nice portrait, I'll ask them. That usually goes 50/50 here in Chicago.

Usually I just take photos of people and if they see me doing it, I stay where I am and just keep shooting in the same direction, and pretend to look around them or behind them, like I was trying to shoot something else. I also avoid eye contact if I'm using that method.. if you look at them directly they'll certainly know something was up..

Many ways to go about it.. and in Boston, just like any major city, it'll be easier to get away with than some tiny town. People in larger cities expect cameras / tourists/ art-majors, etc.. In my experience, people in small towns tend towards being paranoid.

I had a candid in the street Monday say something to me in Madison, I just ignored him and kept shooting other things. Sorry, you're in public, I'm free to shoot.

Obviously I didn't continue to shoot him after he said something but I didn't delete the shot either.

I know there's various opinions on this subject but I fall on the side of everything is fair game...except children. I think street candids should have a some voyeuristic qualities to them, people in their natural state not posing.

I do find that some people on the street love being shot and that is a blast too.

I need to sell my 85 1.8

I sold my 85mm f/1.8 for $380 on Amazon within 24 hours or so. Net was around $350-360. Best decision I made! I love the 135mm.

Tim - nice picture once again. May I ask why ISO400 on a day like that? I normally shot at 100 unless my shutter is maxed out on a super bright day.

I have a sharp 85 1.8 and like it a lot. I recently rented a 135L and took it to Paris for a week. In find that the 135 is the ultimate outdoor stealth portrait lens. The 85 1.8 with its fast AF is better than the 135L for indoor purposes. I did use the 85 a few times outdoors while in Paris and ended up preferring some of its shots to the 135.

They are both great lenses...both "best bangs for the buck" in a way. I want to own them both and hopefully will some day.

I want the 135L badly, I will buy it as soon as I go FF. Therefore I got myself an 85mm 1.8 to see how I like the focal distance. Not only that I like the distance, but the 85 1.8 has surprised me, it's a very good lens. Just check these shots of a couple of models from the last week, only light reflector used. Thanks Thein! I was also shooting in some fairly dark shade just before this shot, so by the time we got to this spot, I just kept it at 400. I definitely could have gone lower!

m.shalaby,

Incredible work!

Do you mind if I ask you a question. Your backgrounds somehow mimic the color of the clothes or skintones that people wear. Is that a special post process or are you intentionally picking out backgrounds that compliment your subject.

I would love to know.

Thanks!

Most of them look like they have a strong yellow cast, not just the first one. I noticed (and I believe I commented then too) a similar cast on your other images of the little girl with straight black hair. I kept finding myself trying to look past it to see the image behind but felt like I was looking through a colored window.

Hi there!

I am new, but I have a question you guys probably can answer for me! Currently I am the proud owner of a Canon 550D. I would like to buy a new lense and your pictures really made me enthusiastic about the 135mm.

I haven't seen anyone using the 550D (but the 5D, 7D Mark etc.). Do you recommend this one for someone using my camera?

Thank you in advance for your help!

Wow I'm glad I joined this forum. What a fast respond!

I just went to a camera store and the man told me that it would not perform as good as I would like it to (I didn't understand all his technical terms. He used a calculator - I believe it had something to do with cropsensor).

Despite all my research - 50mm, 85mm - this lense still seems like a winner. Just want to make sure that it is worth all the money!

- Anyone knows what the guy was talking about?
- And I am very curious to hear the opinions of as many people as possible :) !

He is probably saying you may not get what expect from the lens with your crop body. Some say the L lenses really start to shine on full frame cameras. I agree to a point, but that doesn't mean it won't produce some great pictures with a crop body.

One thing to consider is the 135mm focal length is pretty long on a crop camera. With the reduced field of view it you will have to get fairly far back from your subject.

Many believe you should have more invested in glass than body. I agree with this and I think your 550D will work great with the 135L. But, in some cases you would be better off with a lens built for a crop camera. I wouldn't recommend the 17-40L for instance...you would be better off with the 17-55IS instead IMHO.

If you don't understand what he meant by crop sensor look up discussions about Full Frame vs Crop.

If you are new to photography and intend it to capture some everyday candid portraits I'm pretty sure the focal length on a crop will frustrate you.

This is what the camera store seller was alluding to. He probably type 135*1.6 on his calculator. The field of view of 216 is very narrow and can be very limiting.

I would suggest a 50mm 1.8 to start with. If that isn't long enough for you then I would get the 85 1.8.
