Some awesome work in this thread, loving the dog in the grass and the girl with the seeds. Hope she made a wish :)

Here's one of the first photos I took with a borrowed 135, and what lead to buy one of my own:

Shots are great and great detail, but I can't get past that color cast myself. Keep in mind though I don't like many effects you find emulating vintage look so it is probably just me.
I have to say I agree. Ive been known to go vintage on some of my shots, but not to the point of killing the contrast. You have a good eye thien, but the processing is killing it for me. The shots of the little girl have real potential, just dont care for the color cast or the lack of contrast. BUT...this is very subjective. For every one person who doesnt like somthing, there are 3 others that do. Just thought I would offer up my opinion.

no problem. Took me a while to fall into my 'style'. Its easy to get carried away in photoshop! some of the last ones you have posted are looking great. dont mind the cross processed look when done right. although...could be too much if done all the time. your eye is good though! love the composition!

All the time. One of the main reasons I bought it.

These were outside though. :)

what lens would u guys recommend? this or the 70-200mm f4 IS for mostly outdoor shooting of wildlife, street phtotography and sports?

i might use it for indoor shooting of say my future kids

mbn
28th of May 2011 (Sat), 09:24
I would recommend a 70-200 2.8 non IS for your kind of shooting, mostly moving Subjects.

135mm, for me, is too short for Wildlife.
Quite nice for sports, if 135mm is the Focal Lenght you need. I Love using it to shoot Icehockey.
135mm and 2.0 are nice for Indoor Portraiture, but you will definately miss the versatiltity of a zoom when shooting Kids.

I'm sorry that 2.8 is too heavy to shoot moving objects with no IS without support. You will never have consistently sharp handheld shots especially after shooting for a duration of time.

This bad boy is my next purchase I think might pick one up this weekend but they seem to be sold out everywhere.

the 135 can do great and mysterious things!!

But it can't break the laws of optical physics! Since I'm a complete loser, I actually did a few estimates and calculations. Assuming that the woman in the photo is somewhere between 5' and 5'6", and that the horizontal FoV in the shot is therefore somewhere between 20' and 28', we can guess that the camera was about 80-100' away from the subject. That would put the DoF, at f/2 on a FF sensor, at 10-12'. Consequently, in Mythbusters speak, the photo is "plausible," seeing as it's entirely possible that the completely-in-focus area of the shot is in fact around 10 feet. But at 80-100' away, I highly doubt that the background would be quite so strongly and nicely blurred.

But I promise that I did this not as a dig at the photographer, but because I want to believe it's possible! If someone can tell me honestly that the 135L is capable of such a thing, I will likely buy one within a month!

congrats Daniel. Nice shots...

Thanks, I'm really exited about this lens, but something tells me I will become even more desperate to go FF, not sure if I can wait until the 5D3 comes out!

Seriously this lens has sort of ruined me for all other lenses. I picked up an 85 1.8 because it would be a useful focal length and by all accounts its a very respectable lens.. yeah yeah sure great lens, sharp and all that, but it doesnt have the built in magic of the 135L.

So I went on a short trip to Singapore. I rented the 135L during 3 days of the trip and gave it a go. I do like the awesome IQ this lens produces, but at the same time I feel that the FL of this lens is way to restrictive for my shooting style.

Great lens for sure but I am not sure if I will buy it..

It's all about adjusting the gamma and offset. Go to image>adjustments>exposure and play around with it. Not every shot will be the same and some will need more than others but that's pretty much it. I like to bring back a little bit of the contrast after that with a curves layer adjustment but to each their own. Glad you like it! Let me know if you have any other questions about it.

Here's a few more from the waterfront. Not sure if I'm getting tired of this PP style yet or not. Might need to change it up soon..
