Great shots in this archive, no doubt about it.

I'm contemplating selling my 70-200/4, and investing in this piece of fine glass. Has anyone here made a similar move?

I sold my 70-200 f/2.8 and bought the 135L and the 200L. My circumstances may be different than yours, since I have the 70-300IS and the 100-400 and my 70-200 was rarely used.

literally just got this lens about 40 minutes ago. Snapped a few of my pops doing his PT exercises (just got a knee replacement).

I am loving this already.

300D ISO 400 f/2 (i forget the shutter speed).
Slight levels adjustment, light USM, desaturated in GIMP

Took my cam for a spin at lunch. First time with the 30d and 135mm paired together... I am now understanding why a lot wider lenses are used and this is what i will try next for street photog but the 135mm still rocks

I sold my 70-200/4 L IS for the 135L mainly because it's more discreet and use a x1.4 & x2 TC when I need the extra reach.

No regrets and both excellent pieces of glass... although f/2.0 is a big bonus.

Here are some pics from a recent holiday on 5D wide open with just in camera settings and some cropping.

I am sure there are members can get sharp shots with slower SS, i can use 1/125 or 1/80 maybe and still can get sharp results, i just used to handhold very well, after using 300 f2.8L IS always or mostly handholding i can say i can handhold this lens or 70-200 f2.8L IS EASILY!!!

typically its 1/focal length .. but give or take a couple stops depending on a persons handholding ability

Somebody help me here, arrrrrgh, I'm seriously enough considering this lens after shooting head shots at an event where it was all walk around today and really started thinking how nice the 135 might be on my FF. My biggest concern each time I've considered it is the issue of no IS, granted years ago shooting film cameras I didn't have it and did fine back then but now I'm spoiled and expect to be able to shoot at slower shutter speeds.

Guess I'll just have to go practice with my 24-105 with the IS turned off and shoot it at 105 to see how well I do, it's close to the same weight as the 135.

And I'm once again rethinking about getting an 85 1.2 but really don't want to go the money and worry about it being too short on my FF but I really do want the prettiest image I can get when shooting faces, I've got the zoom which is sweet but every time I use it I wish it was smaller/lighter except when I put on the extenders.

How is the look of the 85 a1.2 and the 135 2 different, say at the same f stop i.e. f2, does the 85 still have the creamy look, it just seemed to have something very special going for it when I put one on my body in the store, the three times I almost bought one!

After going through this thread I've gotten awfully close to driving down to my store which is open on Sundays and getting one. The only lens that I use a lot for head/portrait framing is the 70-200 f2.8 which is a fabulous lens but huge.

Aztech,

You are using seamless paper right? Also, are you adjusting your lighting distance to the BG to create Grey while using white? or are you using Grey?

I was considering grey, but feel I could get away with white (for a while at least) and adjust with lighting. Granted paper is cheap. ;)

Of course you could also do the reverse Ryan, make the gray paper white. ;)

And after reading Robert's (TMR) thread about using colored gels on a background and getting better results on a gray background rather than white you might want to reconsider.

How far do you put your model typically from the background? She seems pretty close and I don't understand how you do the separation. How do you prevent the light on the model from spilling on the background? Could you explain your lighting setup please?

That shot was done with 1 light (Octabox) High up (12 ft) in a boom at 45 degrees left of the model. Model is around 7 ft away from the BG..that's it ...Love doing 1 light shots you can get very nice stuff.

I just came from my camera store where I picked up a generic screw in lenshade (much smaller) for my 70-200 f2.8 and while there I put both the 135mm f2 and the little softfocus 135mm f2.8. I tried the softfocus one just because I'd read about it being pretty darn good looking with the soft focus turned off.

Well shooting in the store with the flourescent lights I couldn't tell the difference between lenses when I got home and ran them through Lightroom and my 17 inch monitor. I know that it's a very limited test and there's a lot more to L lenses but I was impressed. But the L f2 was sweet in hand, felt and looked about like the 24-105 and weighs almost the same.

Still undecided as to whether to get the 135 at all or to reconsider the 85 1.2 but it just seems so short on a FF camera.

Tobiah
4th of July 2008 (Fri), 01:07
depends what your shooting. if you shooting kids go the 135L route... for weddings adults etc get the 85L mk2 first. you will not be sorry.

i have both and did a wedding last week. used the 135l for about 15 mins of a 12hour day...

TheAztech,

Your photos are great and influenced my decision to complete add a 135 to my lineup last week, but I'm curious as to why so many of your shots are at ISO 50 when you could have been at 100 (which I've heard is less noisy on a 5D). Does it have to do with syncing to your strobes or something? I'm not a studio shooter, so I don't know whether fast shutters are undesirable with studio lights. Thanks.

Aw geeeze you guys, I went down to my store to buy this very lens and guess what, someone else had bought it. So I stood there thinking, hmmmm-maybe I'm not supposed to have this lens.

So today I'm spending my time re-evaluating the idea of a 85 1.2 and almost have myself re-convinced (I've only been hasseling myself over this for almost a year) and then I log onto this thread, so maybe I'd better wait for them to get another 135mm f2 in the store next week.

Nice, nice stuff. Trouble is that I have all kinds of people/head shots this week and next. Bummer.

Alejandro I absolutely love your work and the single strongest reason I'm still considering that lens, even though I won't endeavor to do this kind of stuff myself, I do love shooting people.

I know this is a techy question on a creative endeavor but generally what f stop is the lens working at on these, it seems absolutely perfect on the bodies and faces yet the background fall off is just sweet. I'm guessing the model is about 8 feet in front of the backdrop?

Yeah that makeup artist ought to be tenured! Just excellent.

Yes. I ordered both for about 200,000yen total in 2005 (as opposed to the 5D: "invest in the lens not the body", and all that... ;)), and while the 85L is the more useful lens in lower light, I have had great success with the 135 on my 20D as well. The longer focal length makes the candids even easier. (all at f2.0, check the exif for ISO)

I guess the 135 might be too long for marriages (indoors) or in close quarters.
But I notice that professional studiophotographers or people who shoot outdoors (and so have ample space to back up) consistently go for the 135.

5D and 135/2 seems like an awesome combo.

Too expensive for me right now, but I might go for it one day.
