I'm really sorry to hear this; would it be possible for you to replace the camera inside the box with the packaging and send me a couple of pictures? Helen@adorama.com - I'd like to send them off to our warehouse manager to check out.

NB I'm out on vacation right now so may not respond immediately

Thank you very much for the response, Helen. It is greatly appreciated and shows a great deal of care for your customers. I had this lens shipped to my office and only brought home with me the Canon box and not the external box. At this point, I do not think that I can get the external box back as someone will most likely recycle it by the time I get back on Monday.

The other lenses that I have ordered all had adequate packing material in the box, it was just this one time that it happened. Everything works fine despite the packaging so I stopped worrying about it. I really do appreciate your assistance.

Hope you are having a nice vacation.

I had a similar issue with a 7D coming from Adorama, the bubble packages around the canon box were pretty insufficient and the box had plenty of room to bounce around inside. Didn't say anything as the 7D was not damaged. What happened to those starch peanuts that hold everything so nicely and dissolve in water?
My 2 cents.

Strangely enough, the first lens I got also had one bubble wrap roll, but that lens was defective and my replacement lens had a lot of bubble wrap. Even if it differs from packager to packager, I'm sure Helen will look into it for you. She's very prompt and a wonderful help. :) Thanks for everything Helen!

i think mine only had one roll of the air bubble wrap too but didnt think much of it since the lens box was wrapped in it. also the lens is packaged in styrofoam so i felt safe. lens arrived w/ no issues thankfully

Wow this thread has blown up in the few days I left it haha. Great adds everyone. Jag, I'm a sucker for a clean Datsun and that NSX cornering shot is money. Daniel, great shots as usual and glad you are getting used to the FL. I can't wait to see when you step up to the 5dii. Here's a quick edit of Tami Lee. I got tired of editing back to back weddings so I set aside some time to do this one for her. Shot at f/2.8 to give a little of the bg a chance to shine ;)

Thanks Ricku, I wish I could master the 35L as you have as your shots have also inspired me to buy it, but I still don't use it much and don't like my shots with it, and it's also the 135L's fault, such an awesome lens!
The light for these shots comes from a silver light reflector, natural light only.

Chris, I never had issues with the FL even on my crop body, I just step back and enjoy this lens. I read a lot about this focal length being too long and that coming from FF folks and I really don't understand this. The 135L is mostly an outdoor lens and being outdoors you can always step back a little :)

CallMeJag = that's a breathtaking shot!

Now I have a question for you. In order to obtain that perfect DOF which encompasses the whole length of the car what part of the car you aim your active focal point at? What's the minimum subject distance that ensures that no car parts will be left out of focus at f2?

(according to my DOF calculator you should be at least 20 meters away from a car just to get a DOF of 2.63m which is barely the length of a sports car... is that so?)

First the 35L, because it can do borth portraits and landscapes, while the 135L can only be used for portraits. (With a few exceptions of course.)

Thats the way I went. :)

I would also get the 35L first because 35mm gives you an entirely different field of view, whereas 85 and 135 are both in the telephoto range.

Now that is the question. ;)

Judging by your sig, you need the 35L more than the 135L right now! :)

This is the only lens I've owned and tried capable of producing SOOC images wide open. Here's a couple from this past weekend's shoot, both SOOC.

CallMeJag = that's a breathtaking shot!

Thank you!

This shot had to be quick since the car was on the move (this was taken after a slalom run, his return trip to the paddock). My focus point was the front right fog-lamp (aiming for a point of high-contrast). At the distance I was at 16.5 meters according to the EXIF, I knew I was going to get most or all of the car in focus. You can vaguely see how the back wheel is beginning to lose focus.

Judging by your sig, you need the 35L more than the 135L right now! :)

Thanks for your input, guys.
I think I will go with the 35L first.. definitely more diverse, that's for sure!

Natsu, while the 70-300 is nice, it's no piece of L. ;)

What happened to those starch peanuts that hold everything so nicely and dissolve in water?

Peanuts are:
· Quite a lot more expensive to purchase
· They take up a lot of valuable warehouse space to store them (which we don’t really have to spare)
· They are very messy and blow all over the warehouse in the summer
· Not all peanuts dissolve in water; there is an additive that costs an additional fee for those type of peanuts
· Most people dispose of them in landfills not water
· You need to fill huge hoppers that hang from the ceiling above packers
· Peanuts have been proven to serve as inadequate protection to what is available nowadays. Items packed in the center of the box surrounded by peanuts can actually shift to the bottom during transit and could cause damage to the item.

Pillows:
· The machine is compact and the pillows are on a roll. So everything fits neatly on a packers desk
· Each roll is in a box stacked neatly on a pallet which fits into a pallet rack location
· They are proven better shock absorbers
· Pillows are more economical than peanuts

While there is no doubt that we experience occasional issues with the packing team we actually pack above and beyond the industry standard. Most packaging companies that come in and see our operation are taken aback by the amount of pillows we use in one carton and try to get our business, because it is not the norm.
The industry standard is to put the item in the box to one corner, and then fill the void with dunnage - whether it be peanuts, pillows, foam, or paper.
Our required procedure is to blanket the bottom and the sides of the box, and then place the item in the middle folding over the pillows - adding more to fill the box where needed. All packaging complaints are followed up and if additional training is required for an individual packer we action it right away.
The only things to which we don’t add any pillows are items that ship in the vendor box, and soft goods (t-shirts, backpacks, hats, etc).

Ok, I'm getting back on topic, sorry! Wishing I had more time to shoot with this lens now that I have it. We have the Ann Arbor Art Fair taking place this week and of course it is almost 100 degrees and humid with storms expected! Not my favorite weather to take pictures in but with an extra 500,000 people in town and the chaos that ensues, there are pictures to be taken!

Yeah, I've had different 70-200's for over 18 months, and looking back found that I rarely shot over this length, hell, it was rarely dragged out of my bag since I got the 24-70. Just can't pass up a lens this sharp for the price I got it at. Have no doubt I'll be happy with my choice.

This thread has me seriously considering ditching my 17-40 f4L and 70-200 f4L to get this and a battery grip for my 5D Mark II. Thoughts on that? I dont really shoot extra wide besides novelty and feel now that i went FF and got the 24-70 f2.8 there is a lot of overlap between the 17-40 and the 24-70. I mainly shoot portraits, very rarely landscapes, but it is possible.

My 17-40 is on its way because I wanto shoot landscapes exclusively with it. If you dont use it sell it. My next lens is the 35mm 1.4 and then a 135mm F2. I cannot convince myself to sell my 70-200 2.8 but I just might. If I had the F4 I would probably sell it for a 135mm. I dont use my 70-200 often but there are times when its very useful.

My suggestion is sell it and buy what you want, if you are not happy you can always find a second hand bargaina and go back! the 24-70 is wide enough for most landscapes! Im not sure about the grip, I feel most people get the grip for the look ;) I just bought another battery, they are quick and easy to change.

Thanks for the info, makes a lot of sense when seen in that perspective. And when using the starch peanuts, heaven forbid the package got wet in transit!! I've been making 95% of my equipment purchases from Adorama for the last 4+ years and have yet to experience a single issue with damage, everything is always on time, what I ordered and at a great price. Thank y'all for your efforts!
With the proof of the 135 f/2L in this thread, I'm looking forward to getting this lens from you in the next couple of months! Can hardly wait!!!

I have literally gone through 150+ pages of this thread.

For those of you on a FF camera with the 24-70 f2.8, what do you think of the combo? I'm entertaining the idea of picking this up as a second lens for portrait and short tele use for my European cruise.

Lastly, for a waist up portrait - is the 430EXII enough light or is more needed for fill light on a backlit person during sunset.

Cheers.
