thanks Al. i still have the 24-105 i was trying to trade my 60D and grip for a 135 but no takers so i just broke the bank and got the 135. but now i'm really thinking of going all prime except for my 70-200 4.

Yeah, I understand. I'm in about the same boat. I don't think I'll ever sell my 70-200 F4, but my other zooms are going one by one.

I've had my eyes on the 135L for a while and tomorrow I'll be trading away my rarely used 17-40L for it. I hope all goes well and I finally get to own this beast. I can't wait to see what it can do with my newly acquired 5Dc too. Everyone here makes it look so easy to use this lens.

No, I never ever think about zooms, I am so used to primes that such heretic thoughts don't even cross my mind. I'd either move, or crop later if necessary, for example the photo above is cropped quite a bit and still looks great, should be even much better if taken with 5D2 for example

Nice shot Chris!

I often use F10 or 11 in studio so the 85 or 135L doesn't matter much. I personally think that the 85 is more versatility in the studio though.

Best,

Thanks! I had 2 chairs in front of them with a large silver reflector and was shooting tighter headshots with the 135L and couldn't quite get the tight shot I wanted with the 85 and the distance between her and I. She was touching up the makeup and decided to just step back a little and see what that got me. Shortly after this shot I switched to the 85 for most of the rest of the shoot. I too prefer the 85 but will be selling both the 85/135 later this month for the 70-200 2.8ii. 85 is a bit too long for full body shots in my home studio and my 35L is too wide and definitely don't want to add another 50 to the bag because I'm running out of room lol. I'll definitely pick both of them up again next year but my shooting style is begging for the 70-200 now mroe than ever.

Chris,

Sorry to say this but you would be regret a lot if you sold your 135L ;) lol

I got the 70-200 II before but I sold it to get the 85L II. I'm still on a good track with prime route though.

Good luck and I'm looking forward to seeing your other pictures. Keep doing great job :D

haha I know I'm going to regret it which is the sad part. If it weren't for me shooting so much in my studio lately, I wouldn't have even considered selling them but it will be nice to shoot seamlessly from full body to headshots without having to stop the flow of the shoot and change lenses. The 135L is the single best lens I've ever used and compare every other lens to but I've had enough prime fanboys tell me that they've tried the 2.8ii and are blown away by it.

They are right, i have the 2 lens and in fact the 2.8 IS II is fantastic. I will make some compares with them at 135mm and i will post here.

ni$mo350
10th of September 2011 (Sat), 14:27
Please do! I'm always looking for some comparison shots. I know the 2.8ii's only flaw in comparison to the 135L is the slightly busy looking bokeh with distracting bg's compared to the 135L that nukes anything and everything into a dreamy bokeh smoothie and for a pixel peeper such as myself, the 2.8ii isn't as sharp in real life shots compared to the 135L which is fine because it is a zoom and sharp in it's own right. I edit at a very close to pixel level quite a bit on portraits out of necessity and so the sharpness wideopen coming from primes was a concern for me.

haha I know I'm going to regret it which is the sad part.

The 5DII is actually cheaper than the 2.8II so you can buy another body and then you don't have to ''stop the flow of the shoot'' to change lenses, just change cameras... just a thought

haha there's a thought :) But I'm also planning to start shooting cars/bikes at the local track and snowboarding at Mt. Hood this winter and The 70-200 will be perfect for both.

Owned the 70-200 f/4L IS and loved it but it wasn't quick enough for weddings which I no longer do now. What I've heard from previous owners who've moved up to it, it's a very nice upgrade not that the original is bad or anything haha. I shot with it in the store a few times and it felt the same which to me was natural. Didn't feel too heavy and AF was nice a zippy and handheld 1/30th at 200mm in the store and got a pretty steady shot.

I would never have thought this lens would be good at taking shots of small critters but it seems pretty useful.

Well I do have to crop some of the shots quite a bit but I mostly use it for environmental portraits of insects and small animals. The quite long MFD is very helpful too since most of the insects I shoot are easily scared lol.

haha he was just one of the shooters. There was another one shooting with a 70-200 f2.8 :D

Did you know that 135L can do even this? With a little help, of course - a 6$ ring coupler from ebay, to attach an old 50mm f/2.0 lens on top of the 135L, in a reverse position. This photo was made out of 100 individual shots using focus stacking technique, to achieve very large DoF.
