85L? 200 f2L? 200 f1.8L?

Well, in his defense, he did say, "match". Which leaves room for the 85L, 200/2L, and 200/1.8L to be "superior".

^ What Julian said... Hehehehehhe...

;)

i.e.... 200 1.8L @ f/2 sample...

Pretty darn sharp, no?!

Hehe ok ok !! I admit there might be lenses out there that can match the 135L or even be slightly superior, but I haven't tried neither of the lens mentioned above, so I can't argue about it :P

I love the lens, I have it for about a year now, and besides the lack of IS, there's nothing that can be improved I think. I mostly use it MF, but have switched to the Eg screen on my 5D II to improve manual focussing.

Great shot folks!!
I was wondering if anyone uses a 50, 135 prime combo on a FF and how they like it? I was thinking I need a longer FL for outdoors portraits of my son and tball coming up so the 50 may be a little short. I want the 50 for indoors mostly, and outdoors and the 135L mostly for outdoors.

Thanks,
Adam

^PP sharpening.

wolfy317

I'm certainly not a stranger to sharpening. I just don't get that kind of detail typically. Maybe I need to research alternate methods....

Tareq
6th of January 2012 (Fri), 01:16
Is it really that difficult? Just shoot at f2 many times and sure you will get a lot of details, just remember, the further far you are from subjects, the more depth of field or details you can include, sure if i stand the same location he was standing to take that shot at f2 i will get the same, it is not a magic!

wolfy317
6th of January 2012 (Fri), 01:29
I'm not calling it magic. I'm just saying I'm impressed with HIS level of detail, and that I usually don't seem to be able to coax that out of my images. I am very aware of how dof works. It's probably my fault at the processing level. And now that I think about it, I'm betting differences in lighting setups can draw out those details too.

I'm trying to get my head around decent B&W/sepia type conversions, I'm very new to this part of it, and portraits in general to be honest, so any CC is appreciated.

And yes, 135 can be a bit long on a crop when you aren't used to it yet!

I use Alien Skin for sharpening, as a matter of fact I use it for everything, the CS5 itself I use only to remove objects, my Photoshop skills are like 7% from 100% possible. :p
I have Nik but only use the HDR fillter, also have OnOne and never use it. I should try that detail extractor though, might turn out better than Alien Skin

I use NIK color efex pro 4 and there is a filter called detail extractor and I sometimes use it in brides dress to help bring out the detail. Works like a charm.

can you use the detail extractor on landscapes too?

I remember thinking that sharpening in ASE 3 was particularly good when I demoed it. It's more like high-pass than unsharp mask.

can you use the detail extractor on landscapes too?

Yes but I found that in most instances the tonal contrast filter does better for global and I use the Detail extractor filter selectively with control points as using it globally makes it look kind of HDR ish bringing up the black levels a touch much. Better to use detail extractor filter selectively and tonal contrast is sweet for landscapes, but detail extractor is not bad either, just a personal preference I suppose.

agphotography
11th of January 2012 (Wed), 00:46
I've tried it, works well enough as long as you don't pixel peep. Tried it on 1.6x as well.

Not sure if it makes a difference but I have the first version of the 2x TC from Canon, my buddy gave it to me. It was mediocre with my previous 70-200 f/2.8L but it's actually pretty good with the 135L as long as I nail the focus and exposure. F/5.6-8 seems optimal.

Hey everyone:

Just got the 135. It's a beatiful lens. Been using it primarily so far for indoor sports (basketball, etc.), where it's worked wonderfully. But I've also taken a few pics of faces (my girlfriend and our cat).

I'm noticing something I've never seen before and I wonder if it's a peculiarity of this lens of if it's simply something I've simply not come across before (because I don't shoot many close-up faces). In photos of both my girlfriend and the cat, there's this "thing" (reflection?) that shows up at the bottom of their eyeballs. You can see it here in the severe crop of my GF's eyeball. My cat's pics have the same deal going on. Doesn't seem to matter if I take the pic in full sunshine, or with a flash, or both.

I feel like an idiot not knowing what this is, but I usually shoot sports and news events for the local papers and hardly ever do portraits. And I've never noticed it with any of my other lenses. Hope someone can chime in.

And sorry if I stuck this in the wrong forum! :-)

Looks like some specular reflection in some drops of moisture on the eyeball, that's all :D.

Kind regards, Wim
