Just got the 135, here's one walk around shot at f8 but have found the lens works really great hand held even without IS with a 1.4 tele extender, will try 2x today. Pretty neat lens.http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/bb200/palousegirl/135green.jpg

Too bad my 5D isn't working [mirror fall off still not fixed], and my 1Ds2 not making WOW like my 5D, and my MKIII colors seems different on LCD, so what i should do? my 135L is sitting there waiting her turn for shooting.

bacchanal

Okay look at it this way. I shoot a 5D which is full frame, and I really, really want one of those new 200mm f2 lenses, just because the bokeh is soooooo sexy. It's something like $5,300 at B&H and it weighs something like 6 pounds-OMGosh that is too much and too heavy for me for hand held.

But if I buy a 50D which is 1.6 crop, I would have with the 135mm f2, the equivalent of a 216mm f2 which is scary sharp, light weight, easy to balance and hold on the camera, one of the sweetest lenses I've ever used.

Exactly...I kept my 30D just to use with the 135L (well, and for a backup). With the 50D you could crop to your hearts content to get even more "reach". It's not exactly a 200/2, but hey, it fits in the bag!

Is this a joke? You have a 1Ds2 and a MKIII and you're complaining? Snap out of it man...go find some ducks! ;)

Love this lens! Yesterday I messed around shooting it wide open, missed many because the camera wanted to focus on the glasses but with a little more depth of field that should be fixed and we'll see today how the bokeh holds up if I shoot stopped down just a little. This is such an easy lens to work with on FF. On many of the shots though, I had to reduce the sharpness which in LightRoom 2 it is so easy to do. This one is shot at f2.

Nice shot....use around f/4 or f/5.6 and you will see ;)

I would have really liked this if the water were less reflective -- consider using a CPL next time. Also, if you're saving for web, covert to sRGB before saving to help maintain some clarity.

Out playing today trying to get some action shots. Discovered it is much harder than it appears. Here are a couple I liked well enough to post. Most were good for the "action" but the dog kept outrunning the AI Servo mode (or my ability to keep the focus point on the dog) on the 5D so the focus isn't what I was looking for. The lens is awesome.

There are some days when I feel I could photograph the world with a 135L f2 and a 35L 1.4 or 24L 1.4. Some days I also use the 1.4 tele-extender on the 135L f2 which makes it a low profile and light 189mm f2.8 lens that is also sweet for walk around.

The 135L f2 has become one of the very important lenses in my kit.

What beautiful shots, everyone; I have fallen in love with my 135 2, my poor 70-200 2.8 has been spending more time in the bag because with people, I'm either using the 135L or the 85L.

I finally took some shots with the 135L stopped down instead of wide open like I normally do with people and OMGosh what a stunning lens, it gains a whole separate character, not just the same lens stopped down but a different look. Amazing!

Aztec I don't know if I should say anything because I'm looking at your photo on a 17" non calibrated iMac screen (we tried calibrating it with one of those Spyderco tools and it really messed up my computer so I have to rely on Apple's calibration system).

Anyway, the shot you show with the new monitor does not quite offer the same lusciousness that the earlier wider shot does, unsure what it is but on my monitor the skin has a slight shift to a dull green. It's slight but it's definitely not the Aztec look that I'm so used to seeing and it's a little uncomfortable. I'm talking about a micro shift in what the skin looks like and maybe it's just my monitor.

But you have (for me at least) almost a signature skin look you get with your models that amazes me every time I see your shots and I love it, I really, really love it. It's not quite there in this shot from the new monitor, it could just be a slight change in the PP but that's where you're usually so consistent.

Does this make any sense or help?

Also, studying the light on the second shot, I'm trying to learn how you get that gorgeous look with your lighting. Are you using an octobox overhead and a beauty dish from the front with a cloth for fill? Studying the catchlights after looking at the skin in the first shot and just amazed, thrilling actually.

Aztec I finally bought some strobes, but got the Elinchrom for the faster flash duration so I can do a little more with table top things like pouring liquid, gravy etc. I've had most of my focus upon table top but it's your fashion photography which has actually aroused a desire in me to also go in the direction of portrait, yes I know not the same thing but it's still lighting faces.

Hey Jannine..I used to have an iMac and I got rid of it because wasn't giving me accurate color and the Calibration wasn't accurate.

No in that shot I used Beauty dish above and for fill I used an translucent umbrella but behind me ...

Elinchrom are very god very consistent...congrats for your new toys....

I just can't stand not getting my colors properly....it drives me INSANE i feel like walking in the dark with my eyes closed

I have a new 24" iMac and I also noticed a difference in the skin tone between your first post of this model and the second post. Perhaps it was lit differently or processed differently. I don't know if what I'm seeing on my screen is the same as what anybody else is seeing, but I do know that the color, lighting, and skin tones on your 135L model posts have consistently looked similar... beautiful!.... and that there is a slight difference in your last post. In your earlier post, you said...."Im working on this brand new monitor and I spent the last 2 hrs trying to calibrate it and I'm not happy with the colors is giving me...not happy at all, I'm not even sure if the colors are right..." I think that what Jannine was getting at, and what I noticed when you first posted the shot is that yes, we agree with what you said, the colors are not the same. Looking forward to more posts from you.....:D

Thank you.....The dam! monitor it's going to be returned

Thanks Aztec.

Zariio, were you using a flash fill on those shots of her and if yes, how was it set up, there's a very nice catchlight just above her pupil so I'm guessing it might have been off a flash bracket right on the camera or was it an onboard camera flash...or none at all.

Anyway, beautiful...

Was just about to ask this, so any help would be great Aztec.

The Dell 2408 gets mixed reviews, though a lot of people swear by it. I'm on the lookout for a monitor to plug my Macbook Pro up to as the screen on the 'book just doesn't cut it in higher end imaging applications. Your newer post with the 2408-edited image doesn't have the same depth & contrast to the skin tones that your usual shots do. Shame to hear the 2408 didn't work for you Aztec, clearly judging by your images you know what you're doing so the fault is the monitor's.

Keep up the great work by the way, you're the one person making me regret trading up my 135L.

To be honest I'm very impressed with the results from my Macbook Pro screen, though my standards aren't that high being a semi-pro. Let us know how your monitor search goes, as I'm looking for a ~24" monitor myself as well. Have you considered Apple, BenQ, Lacie, or even Eizo?

So many bloody options it hurts my head considering them...

BenQ have gone (I think) exclusively to TN panels in the US - blah. Fortunately, I got a FP241w before they stopped importing them - I can't praise it enough. If it's available in your neck of the woods, it's worth a look.

My 4 year old Shiba Inu "Kobi"

308347

for action shots of my dog i've found a different method works best:

i will play (ball/tug/chasing/etc) and keep the camera held low to the ground. as i play, i constantly move and try to get close while focusing. whne i am relatively close i will rip off 6 shots as they fly by. out of 200+ exposures you can usually count on 5-10 that gets peoples attention. it takes a bit of practice, but ends up being pretty dynamic.

Thanks for the tip, Opus13. I found myself back in the park again last weekend, this time with both the 135 & 24-105 on the camera - had a great afternoon of shooting (and the 24-105 had a better keeper ratio, shhhh - I'm sure the IS had a lot to do with it).

Aztec you were so right about this lens at 4.5-5.6 on faces, it's incredible and it's already really sharp wide open. But at 4.5 5.6- it still has beautifull depth of field fall off yet renders a face shot perfectly, I am so in love with this lens.

L is for lousy......

Basically, the lens was bought new in January 2008 and it has never delivered great photographs. At first I thought it was me, then I thought it was my 350D, so I upgraded to a 40D. Still the results were well below expectations, and poor in comparison to my 50mm f/1.4 (a non-L series lens) and my Sigma 10-20mm lens.

A friend then tested the lens on a tripod with a tape measure stretched out in front. The results showed the lens, whilst showing that it was focused on the red 80cm mark, you can see from the image that the 80cm mark is out of focus and the DOF is from 73 to 78cm.

So I sent the lens off to Canon and got it back yesterday, 5 and a half weeks later. I will test it tonight.

Lani Kai

Shouldn't you have tested the lens before upgrading the body? It wasn't doing this with all of your lenses, was it?

wa_tony
16th of October 2008 (Thu), 04:00
Guess I should of tested the lens before upgrading, but, being a novice, I presumed I was the problem. After all, I'd just spent a fortune on an L series lens. I guess Canon could of tested the lens before they sold it to me!

As I mentioned the images taken with the 50mm and 10-20mm are way better than the 135mm.

Sorry to hear about the issue with ur lens Tony. Unfortunately these things can happen time to time with any products.

135mm L question:
If i shot with 40D in good lightning condition(outside) and my hand is not very steady will my image turn out sharp with this lens? or maybe you have to use a tripod for this lens? I think the focal length is kinda long without the IS help. I really want to buy this lens but i can't test it first due to all the camera shop don't have this lens in-stock!

Hi Eric - the lens really is not that long or heavy. I don't own one - yet - but will make a purchase as soon as the rebates come out again.

If you're concerned about hand-shake, I'd say that if you were using at least 1/160 sec and being careful, that you should be in good shape. More insurance with 1/200+ but it's not as if you are trying to support the70-200 f/2.8.

IS certainly is a very nice feature to have. Some, but not all of my lenses have it. You just have to be careful about your shots. Remember, photographers were taking pictures for over 150 years before IS came along ;).
