Makes me want this lens more and more.

^ Hey Steve...

It's actually natural light... It was a mixture of clouds and a few sunrays beaming through the clouds... I think the shallow DOF plays alot into its exposure... Nonetheless, the lighting was entirely natural... Thank for asking... And thanks for all the wonderful comments above... I'll be posting a few more from the set...

Just another question, how close/far were you when you took that shot? Extension tubes used?

Here's a 100% crop with no...I repeat no sharpening.

As long as I have a perfect focus, with my 5D I don't need to sharpen this image in Post Production.

I shot it @ almost a 90 degree angle... I would say that I was about 18-20 inches above it... No extension tubes were used...

4-12m on avg. I think - it was a 4 min. event that "disappeared" into nothing ... a typical "flash mob" organized by students

I never got the feeling of have been too close to the action - FF will even be better
1.6x would've been too close in some cases...from my personal experiences outdoors -
I'll post some samples taken w/40D later ...taken last yr, tho

Well my reason for selling would be that I just bought the 85L...which, as I understand it, actually has a slightly larger physical aperture and can give even more background blur than the 135L on distant backgrounds (and lots more on near-focus-point areas).

I suppose it really comes down to style/subject. Looking from the photos from both threads they are both solid performers.

This lens seems like the perfect match for street photography allowing for some discretion.... particularly when fitted on a full frame body.

rcaq
12th of March 2009 (Thu), 14:44
even tho if they are close in terms of focal length... they're (completely different) -
if most of your work covers weddings, go for the 85 then... you got the 70-200 for occassional stuff above the 100mm range anyway

Perry Ge
12th of March 2009 (Thu), 14:47
I personally prefer the 200 2.8L for street (I don't shoot much street though), but the 135L is really growing on me. It's one of the only other lenses I've seen that can give an 85L-ish look, and it's much easier to use, and MUCH better value for money, - it's a bit sharper than the 85L too but really, that doesn't matter at all. The 85L is still my favourite, but I can understand why many people would prefer the 135L instead.

That is correct. There were some imperfections in the hat that I wanted to hide, and of course some minor skin corrections to make, so I did some light blurring.

the 70-200 2.8 will be very close but this lens gives better colors and I think sharper

Did you find the same focusing issues with your other lenses, or just the 135? At 135 (on a crop camera) the dof will be quite thin at wide apertures, and shake will be noticeable without high shutter speeds. I haven't found my 30D to have issues with focusing, so I'd hope the 135 would work great. :)

Amazing images in here, just got an 85 1.8 and now wanting this one. I also see a lot of 5D users in here- with a lens like this will I see quite an IQ improvement in upgrading my xsi to a 5D? I'm going for glass first, but hopefully the 5D will keep coming down in price :)

Well after owning this lens for nearly a month I was finally able to get out and use this beast. I went up to my parents house to snap some shots of the dogs, and was somewhat surprised with the results. Of the 80 or so shots I took, nearly all were out of focus in some fashion, most appeared to be back focused. After checking them on the viewfinder, I switched to manual focus and was able to get some much better ones, but I am hoping there is not something wrong with the AF on my lens =(

All of the shots were taken in AI Servo from between 10-20 feet away. What really surprised me as how long the AF would take to lock on to the dog laying in the grass, not moving. On a bright sunny day, I was expecting a much quicker reaction, it would seriously hunt for 2-3 seconds. All of the shots were taken between f/2 and f/3.5.

Here are some shots, sorry they are large, but its kind of hard to judge the softness on the smaller sizes.

that a prove that the issue is just with me

Not at all, the wide aperture AF on my second copy (we won't talk about the first one) was awful, particularly in AI Servo AF, until I got it serviced by Canon. It has been fine since.

Did you try taking it out of AI Servo?
Sometimes I 've noticed shooting stationary objects, AI Servo hunts and never really locks on.
At least that happens to me sometimes.
Then on moving objects , it is fine.

I have noticed some focusing issues as well, however it is only every once in a while. I have always just assumed user error since it is not as frequent, however I also shoot in AI Servo. Ill try switching and see if that helps.

that's exactly what what happened with me with the 30D, but try to take pic with f8 and i think it will be fine but this is not a solution !

try to try it with 5D to see if the result will be same?

I don't know if the 40D have this feature or not, but on my 5D MK2 I can fix the focus and with my 135L I edited by -3 and it's perfect and I will post some shot's with F2.0

I'm wrestling over getting this, or the 16-35L ii next. I picked up a used 85L ii a couple weeks ago and love it!

The 16-35 is a great lens... rented one for Yellowstone... really liked it. rented the 85L a few times... very nice!!! What I love about the 135L is how fast it is to focus... and it is super sharp. I love the focal length on the 5D... I tossed around the idea of buying the 85L and the went with the 135L. No turning back. The 85L is magic... don't get me wrong... but... for me... the 135L just does it all.
