Gosh, that looks great Glenn. How far away from the car were you when you shot this?
About 20-25 ft I guess. He was waiting to start his run up the Gurston Down hillclimb course so he wasn't moving at the time ;) The EF 135mm isn't the best paddock lens in the world - the focal lenght is wrong, I just took it along that day to test it out. I might use it for some rallying in the new year though, it would probably work well in dark, murky forests.

In order to spare soupdragon's budget, the forum will now implement a ban on posts of pictures taken with anything but the "nifty fifty" and the 18-55 kit lens. Eat you hearts out all you 1Ds II users!

Hey Soupdragon, if you really like that focal length canon also make a 2.8 135mm. Probably 90 per cent of the f2 but 20 per cent of the price.

I confirmed the diagnosis yesterday at Samy's Camera. Luckily the rebates are running and he was having one of his no tax weekends so I was able to save about $400 after purchasing three lenses, one of them the 135L.

Hello Sam:
You can't go wrong with this lens........as per your request, I just pulled Julia outside (you can tell she didn't want to be outside) and took a few shots at f2.2. I often use this aperture or even a little slower say f2.8! That seems to be the sweet spot for my copy of this lens (which used to be Drisley's copy!!). It is a great optic and very very sharp. DoF can be thin though so you really have to nail the focus if you're at all close to your subject. Since I have a 1D, I was about 2 metres away from her.......( 8 feet).

My darling wife bought me the 135 for Christmas. I've used it very little so far, as I bought myself the 100-400 at around the same time and it's been more fun. The shots I've gotten from the 135, though, have not disappointed. It cuts like a finely honed knife and the bokeh is stunning.
May I stray from the topic for a second and ask a question of you guys/gals? How do you make a 100 percent crop? Keep in mind I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed when it comes to following written directions, so if you could answer in seriatim, ie., do number 1, then number 2, it will be easier for me to understand.
Solinger, if I lived by you, I'd be happy to let you use the lens.
Schmoelzel, I never get tired of looking at perfect pictures.

Can someone post pics of someone USING this lens I want to see how big (i.e. small) it looks on a camera in the hand ;)
(preferably ona 5D and a male holding - but anyone?)
Thinking of getting it for more discreet shots i.e. equivalent to the 85 on a crop camera I miss that FL since upping to the FF 5D:cry:

Shot this with the 135 f2 with my 10 D. I hadn't had the lens very long and was doing some testing because I thought my lens was back-focusing. I shot this at f9 to make sure it would have enough dept of field to be in focus.
Later, I was convinced my lens was indeed back-focusing and sent it off to Canon to be calibrated. Ever since, it has performed perfectly.

When i used that lens with 2x TC on my 1D mk2N i decided i never use it again.
It is amazing even with 2x, so i don't want to imagine without any TC, and thats why i bought it, I don't know when i will get 300 f2.8L IS which one i will love more, this lens or 300?
I posted some shots on my thread using this lens with 2xTC so i will post again here from this lens naked.

I think you will find the autofocus on the 300mm quicker... the 135mm is not slow. but the 300mm is about as good as it gets

I heard that 135L is quicker, maybe i am wrong, in fact this lens with 2x was as fast as 100-400 on my 1Dmk2N, so i can believe that this lens is one of the fastest lens out there.

The 100-400mm is dog slow in the autofocus department - the 135mm is reasonably fast, but not in the same class as the 300mm
the 300mm is faster using the 2x converter, than the 135mm is without it

I read somewhere that this lens is very fast, didn't mention if it is faster than 300 or not, but i will test the speed whe i will get 300, anyhow many sports shooter use 300 and 400 as they are the fastest lens out there but if that 135L is enough reach then it will be most used as well, i tried this lens at lowlight and its still fast.

I believe that 85mm on 1.6x body is equivalent 136mm

216mm on a crop is the FL u get with the 135L. The 135L is just so damn nice IQ wise, but I'm afraid the length is going to be rediculously long. I wanted to use it for portrait work and indoor sports like basketball, as well as stage performances. Thing is, I can choose to sit wherever I want at the basketball games I attend. I can be at the base line, or I could be at the back of the stands. Same with the performances I go to see. The 85 is pretty long, but the IQ of the 135L cannot go unnoticed. That glass is gorgeous.

August,
If you are happy with your 35MM EF L prime as your walkaround lens then I would go with the 135MM EF L...the IQ and bokah are stunning. Then start saving your pennies to re-acquire the 17-55 EF-S IS :)

Thanks for the advice Jim. That the thing. I'm happy with the 85 as my tele, and I'm happy with the 35L as my walkaround. I want the 135L not for the reach, but for the rediculous IQ. I want the 17-55 just to have a wide angle zoom with IS incase the 35L isn't wide enough or I need to do a hand-held night shot. Tough decision I have. I should probably just lay low for a while.

I'm curious how big the bokeh difference is for the 1 stop difference between this and 2.8, and how many owners own both the 70-200 2.8L IS, and this, and use both often. I'd be pretty happy to hear from those of you whom do not shoot sports, which is a scenario I can understand the 1 extra stop and super quick af speed of this lens would be ideal regardless if you have a 70-200 2.8L IS. I also wouldn't mind hearing from you if you own the 85 1.8. Would love responses for crop camera users too, as 135 = standard 200, and 85 = 135 essentially (field of view wise anyway.)

Not the best example but you get the idea... I'd load them in separate browser tabs or something and flip back and forth to see the difference. It's interesting to note that although the EXIF reports that the 70-200 is at 135mm, the actual FL is slightly different.

This isn't really a great example because the background shifted just slightly; the darker background in the 135L shot behind the flower petal makes it appear sharper and more contrasty.

Seems to be a lot of decent ones.
After getting my 105 macro, I realized how different closeups at 1:1 or 1:2 are compared to using regular lenses. First of all, the FOV is waay more narrow, to me, I actually think the closeups with regular lenses is sort of funner and easier.
