I didn't even know that lens could produce such beautiful images big boosting is that your number one long zoom I might have to invest in one of those do you use it much at night..

I had a 70-200 2.8 but didn't want to take it to the zoo because it would be too heavy to lug around, so I took the 55-250 instead. It's a great walk-around lens, and I was pleasantly surprised by the results, since I've rarely used it before. I actually took it out again a few days ago. I'm currently looking to buy a 70-300 L, which will likely become my primary lens. But I'd definitely recommend the 55-250 if you're not looking to pay for L glass.

I haven't done much night shooting at all, so I can't definitively comment on good lenses for that, but if I were I'd probably use my 50mm 1.4 for the aperture or the 55-250 just for the IS, depending on what I was shooting. But I'd research the lenses more if you're shooting at night.

It's a sweet picture, and I've got a couple of suggestions.

Firstly, it lacks contrast and saturation. This is because your camera's sensor isn't as sensitive as the human eye so the usual practice is to adjust this in post-processing.

Secondly, it looks like you had auto-focus on. The camera has focused on the net, not on the girl's face. Ideally, with portrait shots, you'd want to make sure the eyes are sharp. When there's nothing in front of your subject, this is usually fairly easy to achieve. But when the subject is behind something - a net, a window, tree branches, etc - it's best to switch to manual focusing. Or you could stop down, i.e. choose a narrower (higher number) aperture. In post-processing, you can get it looking a little better by sharpening it.

Good start, though. :)

Thanks for the tips. I picked up Lightroom 4 the other day, which I also have no experience with, and I'll see what I can do. Yes I usually use AF and then go wide open to get the most blur.
