Hello All,

I have to say that the lighting at this event was difficult...and I had to use the 580EX but There isn't much else you can do...

Tell me what you think - unfortunately they pale in comparison to Dwight...

Hi there, never heard of them to be honest! Not so keen on the first one think its the tatoo's, although I think the 2nd is a cracker. I like how the lighting is behind him, well done good shot
Cheers Ricky

Well, actually I like the first one a lot! I love the tattoos even though I am not an ink personage. It is generally considered 'bad form' to cut off any instrument near the end ... it gives the impression you didn't compose well ... on technique we all use is to tilt the camera at an angle to get everything in ... usually no one complains about the "tilt". :-) Anyway, I'm not moved by the second one. And I'd also consider posting at least four images for a concert.

BTW, symes, sometimes it takes a day or two for folks to find your postings ... wait at least a day before bumping your own threads and the best way is by adding another image or two. When you look at my postings you'll see that I add another image every few responses that I give. Make the viewers want to come back to you. And never WHINE about not getting comments ... take responsibility for it and work at getting attention and feedback. Oh, and don't compare yourself negatively with anyone else ... in my case I have all the very best equipment and the best lighting and biggest names in the world ... if I had your venue and equipment you wouldn't even look at my images.

#1 is nice but seems a little out of focus and a touch underexposed. In a perfect world you would have captured her whole hand also (I totally understand that concert photography is a long way from being a perfect world!)
#2 is really good IMHO, but for some reason doesn't move me. I don't know that seeing the whole guitar would help either. Technically, besides the crop it is a great photo. There is just something that it is missing.

I hope this helps!

I really like the first one! Yes, it is a bit soft, but not too much so. Maybe a little (more) sharpening would help.

It was never my intention to WHINE...if that is how it came across I apologize for that...

Point taken on the bumbs though...

Didn't mean to sound harsh and I apologize profusely ... I think I felt guilty more than anything since I like to check out your postings and I felt like I hadn't had the chance. Anyway, I find that I like the first image of the "Ink Girl" better every time I look at it .

Dwight I think you are being a bit modest here! I am sure you would produce first class images as good as we have seen recently. I have taken the comments made a couple of weeks ago on board and I am having another crack at concert photography again tonight!!! This time I am trying to make it a bit easier and using only the 50mm f1.8. This way I can concentrate on focusing and framing the shot rather than trying to hand hold the 70-200 F2 I had the last time. I will post up soon to let you know how I got on.
Cheers Ricky

I have a specific question for you actually Dwight...your images are so sharp. You say it is equipment but I think that is a bit modest..>:) I was using the 70-200 F2.8 IS. My shutter speed was 1/100 and I was f 2.8...what I am trying to figure out is why they came out a tad on the soft side...what I think she might have been moving a little quick for only a shutter speed of 1/100 but the lighting was so awful I had to use the flash and that was as low as I felt I could go...

any ideas on what I can do to improve these shots?

Cheers,

Symes, the lighting at the Chumash Casino Resort is literally World Class (as are the performers and sound system) and when combined with my 1D Mark II and IS lenses, I seem to get sharp images. Have you read through my Q&A over in Talk About Photography Forum? I think I talk about everything I do. If you read it and have more questions, please post to that thread.

Pity the focus is off on the first. Would have been nice otherwise. Subtle use of the flash! Do you have some more images? Don't know the band, but it looks like fun. By the way, I wouldn't consider 1/100 @ 2.8 'bad lighting' ;)

Mark, sorry to take so long ... I am simply inundated! Anyway, the thread was actually started by Aam on my behalf, but it is http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=81761. I will be going back to it again as I do some new stuff at the casino and elsewhere but it has been dormant for a while ... please feel free to "bump" it with questions, suggestions, tips, ideas, whatever.

I like Bif! Of course, she's a regular favourite here in Vancouver. I've only seen her once, at a free outdoor concert. It was a 45 minute set in the progressively stronger rain. Loved every bit of it though.

Btw, were you ever a fan of the Smashing Pumpkins? Am I the only one who thinks that Daddy's Getting Married sounds like Today?

Hmmm, I never noticed that before. There is atleast a slight similarity.
