Ran into a strange phenomemon on EBay.

Been monitoring for a couple of months looking for a clean 420 EX. Final bid prices were $125-140 for a while, now all the sudden nothing less than $150 and the last three went for $175 - 190 plus shipping. Given B&H Video is asking $175 and seems to be in stock - what am I missing? I was hoping for a drop when the 430 became available.

Yes, people on ebay do not shop around.

Tim - when did you become a moderator? Maybe I'm just not that observant...:(

People on ebay are stupid.

Just sold a flash on EBAY and the final bids were from Canada and UK which drove the price up $70. The Adorama price was $299 and I sold it used for $307 :) :) :) (UK) plus shipping and insurance.

I wonder what that flash would go for new in the UK (Minolta 5400HS(D)?

That is a good point - people buying from other countries might pay more than US retail but still pay less than at home. For some people it's hard to order from big stores overseas.

About a week or so ago I think :)

I met 5600hs(D):) ... I had a 5400HS in the past:confused:

as of 2005.10.19 02:17:28 UTC. http://www.xe.com/ucc/
279.95 GBP = 488.748 USD
United Kingdom Pound Unites States Dollars

1 GBP = 1.74584 USD

$488 is a lot of money for a flash

you are so right, but we are used to high shop prices in the UK.
that is why Internet buying is so popular here...big savings.

also keep in mind, as the supply of new 420ex flashes dry up, the replacement flash (the 430ex) is much more expensive then the 420, so the 420 becomes more desirable because it fills a price gap.

if you watch carefully b&h also sell second-hand flashes, i got mine for $140 :)

It is a weird time - B&H is selling the 550EX for the same price as the 430EX.

I've thought for a long time that eBay buyers generally had too much money. The prevailing thought seems to be that it must be a good price because it's on eBay.
