I get kind of bored with the same old knee on the ground shots - opinions on this cropping (straight from the camera).

Actually I dont mind the crop. It is a bit different and that can be refreshing when you see very similar crops on this site...I do think the photo is dark overall.

My "rule" is that if the riders helmet and the bikes front tire is in frame then it can be a useable shot.

Thanks for the input. The image is dark because it WAS dark! :) Take a look at the soft shadows. It was shot at 400 iso on a very very overcast afternoon at Infineon. I actually like the moody effect on the image. I love the heat haze from the exhaust with the decent blur of the back bground.
I have considered PSing some of the images shot that day to bring up the brightness but I think I will leave them as shot.

It's cropped slightly too tight for my taste. I'm happy with part of the rear wheel being out of frame, but I'd prefer to see all of the rider's helmet in shot.

It is dark, but that can be fixed.
I don't mind the crop, I have been trying similar stuff myself recently.
Further on Kent's rule, if most of the helmet, or at least a riders' equivalent of their eyes (visor) is visible along with the front of the bike.

at first i liked it, but when i looked at it again, i don't like it :\
it's the angle i think, it looks like he's falling off the photo. i'd prefer him to be riding INTO the photo..
hrm, i think you've JUST gotten away with it, - but if it was any more 'infront' of the bike (more headlights, less side on) it wouldn't work at all.

A good crop, looks good on my monitor.

I like it. Good job. The crop increases the drama for me by letting you feel so close to the action. I don't mind the angle, if you were further around the side of the bike his visor would start to be turned too much the wrong way. :)

I would be very happy to have taken that.
I like getting in close on things too. Obviously you are going to cut objects off, but that's
the only way you can get that closer detail.
