I can use some first hand suggestions for portable strobe equipment to use in equestrian arenas.
Along lines of battery pack + bracket, etc. Need about a 60 to 70 foot throw and f3.5 at 1/400 to 1/800 sec. shutter (ISO 800) from a 20D.

I realize that ambient is a combo of quartz-halogen and mercury vapor of varying ages.

RAW should help with color balance.

A few hints on composition would probably be in order, too! :D
Al Jacobs makes battery conversions (http://www.aljacobs.com/index2.htm) & seems to know what he's talking about. Peresonally, I'd go with something as powerful as one of the old graflex IVs, if you could get reliable batteries for it.

Thanks for the smart ass comment - about what I expected.

I think I still owe you a few! :D
Or was it the reference to "something as powerful as one of the old graflex IVs,"? Power is king, as long as you can dial it down when you need to. Singe their hair! It won't curl up 'till after the shutter has closed! :D

Singe their hair!

A bright light that is only about one stop down from a thermonuclear blast!

im guessing your shooting sports in stadiums?

your 20d flash synch's at 1/250th, you know this right?

you could get aien bees b1600, one of their snoots and their battery pack and that should be able to cover what you want. you could either fire it from the flash on camera (on board, hotshoe or using a bracket and off camera cord) or use remote transmitors like radio slave 4i or pocket wizards
