My 20D and EF 50mm F 1.4 done me proud.
When I got my EF 50mm F 1.4 Lens I went crazy and took a whole lot of pictures of my Dogs.
I really wanted to see what DOF I could get with the aperture @ F 1.4.

Then someone told me Hallmark cards (Australia) were having a competition and wanted people to send in pictures of their pets and the winner of the competition will have their pet printed on one of their range of cards for sale.
I thought what the heck; I will give it a shot, AND I WON!! STOKED!

It just shows if you take enough pics you’re bound to get a good one.
Here is the pic I won with

Thanks again for your comments can wait to get the sample card.

Yes my dog now thinks she is a super model and she now wants an entourage.
I gave her a roast beef dinner tonight with gravy and roast potatoes.

Funny thing is they said to me like other people in this thread, what a cute puppy.
She is 5 nearly 6 soon and even when I take her for a walk people say, oh what a cute puppy. The reason why everyone thinks she is a puppy is because her head has not grown much, it is still a puppy size but her belly isn’t she is a stomach on legs and as usual if you look at the Pic closely, you will see she has food between her paws eating which if you knew her would not suprise you at all

You know you should make money with good photography instead of undermining every other photographer's market position, right? Hallmark is not exactly in need of charity...

Great shot but it's posted in the wrong forum. I think it should be moved to the "Glamor and Nude" forum. After all, it a pretty sexy pose and your dog's not wearing any clothes. :o

All i get is the pleasure of seeing my picture and dog on a Hallmark card in the stores and a bunch of cards or some crap.

Also it is good know my photo was choosen out of so many, i was told they picked her out straight away, then there were other good ones then they would look back at mine and say "how cute" and discard the others.

So i guess Hallmark are ripping me off but i will be happy when i see my dog on cards in the store, i am more exited for my dog being on the card and being able to say thats my dog!, i not to fussed its my picture.

I am a newbie less then 1 year photography experiance, How would you make money oot of good pictures?

Seriously? I don't want to be a jerk here, but thats a rip-off.

Why should Hallmark get to make money off your picture and you get nothing?

Even if you take actual cash out of the picture, how about some free greeting cards or a gift certificate to a camera store?

In any event, congrats on taking such a great photo.

That's funny!

Ok, I admit, I am not familiar with the postcard market, but let's assume photographers who de postcards do get paid. A lot of times in these type of competitions the organising party (in this case Hallmark) gets the right not only to use the winner's photo, but also any other good photo that they feel they can make money on.
The result is people are giving something of value to a huge, rich company that will make a lot of money out of those people's work. And photographers who are able to make a living out of their work, now have to lower their prices because they are competing against thousands of others who are willing to work for free.
So yes, when you give something that is worth money away for free, and when this happens on a large scale, you are devaluating your work and undermining the market position of fellow photographers. How is that funny?

Fatrat, this is not a personal attack on you, just a call for awareness to everybody who is involved in photography. Your photo is fabulous and I wish you the best of luck wether you pursue this as a hobby or maybe one day decide to make it your career.
As for how to make money out of good pictures, don't ask me - I'm broke right now :)! But remember, a good photo is always worth something, so never sell yourself short!

With regard to the money issue, IndyJeff has written a lot on this in the talk about Photography section. There are a lot of points to be made...for some starting out this is an incredible honour...

Good Stuff...Keep working at it

Forget money. For someone to get his work printed on a hallmark card is reward enough, if you look at the benifits.

1.) The #1 card company in the world(?) chose your images over countless others.
2.) You get free publicity
3.) A very nice addition to your portfolio ("I've done hallmark cards...")
4.) Bragging rights!

I hear countless people saying, "Don't give your images away unless your going to make money off of it." If your established, and already have a successful photography business, by all means make your money. However, if you are just starting out, what would you rather; keeping your photo's stored away on your hard drive to show to mom, dad, uncle Joe and aunt Bunny; or having hallmark post your work for the world to see what you can do.

If you ask me, hallmark, without giving a dime, helps bring in cash from other clients when clients see samples of your work posted on their cards. It can only help.

Free publicity!

JMHO...

Peace!

thanks yet again for you kind comments.

I agree with the last post i have won some cards off Hallmark and i do think if i was to pursue a careeer in Photography it woild look great on my Portfolio and CV to have my work, winner of a Hallmark competition.

I think what money Hallmark would put into photography, artists and the design industry would be huge, they would have paid for 99.9% of there photography contributing greatly to the industry.

I dont think they run this competition to cut out the cost of a photographer, i think its more of a promotional marketing ploy.

Talk with Hallmark because they do pay freelance photographers for nature photos, etc.
I am a newbie less then 1 year photography experiance, How would you make money oot of good pictures?

So basically they asked for free pictures of people pets to use in the cards they sell. That sounds underhanded by Hallmark. What a joke.

I agree with this wholeheartedly. I think that for Hallmark to hold a photo contest is time consuming on their part as they most likely received thousands of photos most of which would be not professional quality. So they have to spend the better part of their time sifting though the entries. If the had commissioned a professional they would have what maybe a hundred to go through? Much less time picking something that floats their boat. Call it a hunch but they spend money promoting it and I do believe it is more of a promotional thing on Hallmark part than anything else. As for the photographers that would take place in something like that I doubt professional photographers take part in contests as they are busy with commissioned work. So from a non professional point of view I think it is great to have in your portfolio should you ever decide to go professional.

How is that underhanded? I am sure the rules are posted and what you will receive if your photo is chosen. They hold a contest, offer the winner a few card type items in return, plus getting your pic out in the "market".
Nope still don't see how that is underhanded. How many people on this forum have a member of their family, a landscape or other type of pic on a Hallmark card, hmm, not many I'll bet. If your choice is to make money from your photos, I seriously doubt you are gonna send them to Hallmark for free. Its an honor, one I am sure Fatrat is proud of.

Congrats on a wonderful shot, and your first contest win..................Joe
