Just curious if anyone thinks a photo like this would sell...

Not in my opinion, and here's why.
1) I can't really be sure of what I'm seeing. It looks a little like some kind of barge. The other thing to the left is complete mystery.

2) Upper part of the picture is just a semi-interesting soft, flowing something. Again, no message coming through.

3) The water and rocks, alone would have very limited interest.

4) Altogether, I don't feel anything for it or against it. It's just a mystery without sufficient pull to make me more curious.

Well, I guess it depends on how you plan to sell them mostly..... maybe as stock images they would do ok... but considered as fine art... I just don't see them on my wall anyhow.

The second one seems to be more along the lines of the kind of stuff people hang in offices and homes.....

Bear in mind though, art is funny that way... for instance, I can't stand Kincaid landscape/cottage paintings :p LOL So, don't base it on the opinions of the few... if you see something special in it, than so might someone else. But, those kinds of target markets are rather small, and usually personal ;) You have to have something that appeals to a wide array of people and moves a memory or an emotion to have it be a "Big Seller".....

You could always use a site like Artwanted.com or Cafepress.com to make prints available without overhead to see if you get any response :)

Best of luck :)

We just had a garage sale so I KNOW people will buy anything...

Artwork is no different. Just find the right market and the right price. I don't personally think you will get rich with either of the photos you posted as they are at two ends of the spectrum - 1st is too weird and 2nd is too common.

But also keep in mind that opinions are like thumbs. Most people have at least two.

I think the concept might sell, but I'm not sure this particular photograph works. For me at least.

That said, don't let it stop you. Give it a go, there's only one sure way to find out.

I actually sort of like the second one. I'm not crazy about the stray sunlight on the rocks at the top but I think everything else is really nice. I once asked my dad who has been a professional artist all his life about what makes a painting sell and he told that a person buys a picture because it has the ability to draw the person into the picture. They will look at the picture and it will bring up an emotion of being there. That picture for me would almost do it.

Perhaps its best to turn the question around. Is either photo so bad so that I shouldn't try to sell it?

For me the answer to that question would be no.

anything that someone is willing to buy will sell...I remember a couple of years back I bought pictures of myself refereeing Ice Hockey...they weren't the greatest quality but they worked fine...and I bought them because they meant something to me...find that market and you're gold...

I like the concept of the first pic but it needs new subject...

Cheers,

Now you are on my wavelength. That is exactly the kind of picture that I like to see used as decorative art.

In this particular example, I would rather have a more distant vantage point - in other words, it seems a little cramped. I would rather see a bit more of the surroundings.

Hi tcguy519,

Overall I like your image. I find the rocks in the foreground are distracting. I think you should crop them out. I like the idea behind the image. Could you post how you created the wave effect?

I think you should experiment with the image. I did a little experimenting with the image in PS.

Good Luck

Yeah I agree.. depends who you aim to sell the pcitures to and if they appreciate the content or not. I guess you would be aiming for craft market style selling arrangement. Maybe frame them and see if you get many sales.

First thing I thought of on #1 is Monty Pyton sailing off the edge of the Earth. If it were more in focus, and you added black light rays coming from over the edge, it might work in a head shop (do they still exist?).

Its wierd though, and wierd does sell in some art circles! I could see it among the choices. A good title would help. Might be good support for some appropriate Ark reference - either serious or otherwise.

#2, gotta agree, is nice but common. I'd expect to see in on a free realtor calendar or something. Not as a 20x30 poster ment to instil tranquility. Unless of course, I had vacationed in front of that exact spot and meditated on it for hours.

Did you have a statement in mind for it? An internet realtor from Beaver Falls could sure use it to lure people there! As fine art, not in my rather inexperienced eye (ps: I love the Tomas Kincade look - got one over the fireplace even! Gazed upon it for hours).

At my stock program, people buy the craziest photos. One of the top photos is that of an old staircase which I hesitated to upload... So it all depends on who needs it for what purpose.

Also consider that 99% of "normal" people don't see the difference between a "fair" photo and a brilliant one. (lucky me).

I wouldn't buy it. Anyone can make a photo look funky with even cheap software (even ones included with any digital camera) these days.

Wrong crowd. The guys here would only consider to buy art and while your photos have interest they might not yet be what this audience (with more knowlegeble then most) would look for as art.
