Hi,

I have a Canon Powershot G2 that I use for my digital pictures. I am not a professional photographer and mostly use auto mode, macro mode or Canons pre-set modes.

Next year we will be taking a trip to Thailand and travelling very light. I want to get a new camera that is small, lightweight but has a decent zoom.

Any suggestions on what I should be looking at?

Thanks.

Mary

If it's small and light enough, I strongly recommend the S2IS... killer zoom and macro capabilities. Flash is OK for small built-in, but no hot-shoe. Otherwise, it's got a lot going for it. Other potential drawback for you is need to get supply of AA batteries (NiMH rechargables almost a necessity, but alkalines available in a pinch in distant lands) and SD memory cards.

apart from the zoom, the IXUS 700 is a tiny camera with alot of oomf
7mp, lots of modes, does movies, etc etc.

Or, a friend took his SD500 (the tiny 7 mp) to the Ukraine and was very happy with it. Fits into the shirt pocket like a pack of smokes, but the zoom is only 3. The S2 is heftier and probably more attractive to thieves.

Second thought, you may want to look for something a bit uglier than the S2, or permanently attach the camera to your wrist!!! ;)

My girlfriend has an SD-200 (little brother of the SD-500) and its great to carry in your pocket. It only as 3x zoom also.

The S2 IS sounds like what you want considering your G2 is about the same size.
