View Full Version : Women's Camera Bag - Epiphanie Bags?

Hi All
I was wondering if any females out there have purchased any of the Epiphanie camera bags? Some of them are quite nice looking but its hard to tell from pictures. They are fairly $$ (especially to ship to Oz), but then again most camera bags are. I have my eye on the Lola in red!

Anybody have one of these and can give me a bit of a review?

Yep they sure are. I really like the idea of them for when I'm going somewhere like a kitchen tea, or out to lunch with the girls, or to the park and want to take a nice looking handbag that I can put my camera in. Its hard to tell just how big they are from the photo's though. Dont want to look like im carrying a suitcase over my shoulder!

If you do a images.google.com and enter epiphanie bags as your search, you'll find several blogs that review the bags. I think I am going to get the Ginger in brown. I like the way Epiphanie bags merge the two functions of camera bag and purse. As soon as I have mine, I'll post a full review.
If you read the entire official Epiphanie blog, you'll find they have pretty constant inventory issues. (The Ginger and some other bags are on backorder) I think they are on the cusp of going from a cottage manufacturer to being a full fledged camera bag company. I think that shows they are a good product, people are talking good about them and sales are increasing.

I went with a Kelly Moore B-Hobo bag myself. I've had my eye on a Lola for a long time but my issue with it is that it's 8 inches wide! I haven't found enough pictures of people wearing it on their side though so I don't know, maybe the size is alright. Anyway, I'm happy with my B-Hobo, though I imagine you'd be able to carry quite a bit more with the Lola.

You can certainly fit more than what I had set up there. That set up is just for everyday going out. I'd say it would comfortably fit a body with lens attached plus two extra lenses. Two pockets in the front for memory cards and batteries. Bigger pocket in the back that can fit a small wallet I think. Pockets on both sides of the bag for a cellphone.
If you are interested in kelly moore bags, she has made videos for each one on her website (http://kellymoorebag.com/videos/?SID=urbsi4vetei0vprga2pju4o403). And when I was researching them I regularly checked their facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=120775551270232&v=photos) for more shots of people actually using the bags.
When I was choosing a bag my main goal was to find a purse I can use every day that happens to have a slot for a dslr, so the slim profile of the b-hobo won me over. I still adore the look of the Lola though and if I wanted to carry more gear and didn't mind a bit of bulk then I probably would've gone with that.

Oh that bag is gorgeous! I will check out her video's. When you wear this bag, does it feel/look big on your body, or is it just like a regular handbag?
Thanks so much for posting the pictures.

Feels like a regular handbag! It has been my main purse since I got it. I usually bring along my 500D with the 50/1.8 or Sigma 30/1.4 and all my personal items. I have used it solely as a purse if I know I won't be needing the dslr at all. It's great. I would recommend a darker color though as jeans tend to rub off on the bag but a quick wipe with a mr. clean magic eraser cleans it right off anyway.

If you think the Lola is big, take a look at the Paris and the Clover! Good heavens, those are gigantic. There is a recent picture on the Epiphanie blog that shows the Clover in gray. Handsome bag but honestly, it's too big. The Ginger looks better poportioned, at least in my opinion.

I just bought my wife one of their bags. It was supposed to be a surprise, but she intercepted the package!! She's just getting into photography and totally LOVES this bag. She says it's "cute." Is that good for a camera bag? I'm annoyed because she is using it as a purse, but as long as she's bringing a camera too, I guess we are all good....
As far as room goes? It's good for a 7D w/o a grip with the brick and maybe a flash. The last of the remaining room is for her wallet, keys, etc.

I'm waiting to see the fall line-up from Epiphanie. I think I read somewhere that there will be more designs.
I like the look of the Lola but how easy is it to get things out of the sides? The shape of it with the wider base and cinched in top seems counter-intuitive.
How fabulous is that red though!

The main problem with any bag is the strap comfort. For me the TT bags have terrible padding and the Domke bags all need a pad. I bought the Lowepro pads for $9 each and I put them on all the bags. Just have so much equipment, usually carrying 2 camera bodies 3 lenses, a flash and an iPad. So I split the gear, but one bag is too heavy. I bought a Passport for my 5D2 and 24-70 and a flash with all the purse stuff inside. It's a great bag for $59. It's not leather, it's not beautiful. But it is functional and the strap is amazingly comfy. Maybe if I was going out at night an wanted to take my minimal, 5D2, 24-70 and a flash, I'd consider a nice leather bag. My husband would like that. ;)
Have fun deciding because $200 is not a lot of money to buy a nice leather bag.

29th of July 2011 (Fri), 06:32
Yep you are right Suzy! I actually have the Lowepro passport sling which is great, but as you say its not beautiful, and not great for a night out if I want to take my camera.
Ive just splurged on 2 new lenses, so obviously I don't want a new bag as desperately as I want new lenses! lol

Lola isn't my favorite, but my goodness, have you seen Lola in black? Wow! I mean, really traffic stopping gorgeous! And btw, I found a blog that criticises the Lola's design, stating that the wide bottom and narrower top make it harder to quickly retrieve gear. However, the Lola is really popular and seems to sell well, so it can't be that big of a problem.
I hope there will be more designs. Honestly, they are taking forever to stock up on some of their bags, it's making me feel a little annoyed. I want a Ginger and it looks like October before I'll get one.

They are designed for cameras.. In fact, they are incredibly good camera bags.
You're the only one who is laughing at the idea... There is obviously a market for good looking, feminine camera bags for women, and it is a lucrative one.

I agree and I used to laugh, too. But one day, I took a photo trip and was hugely frustrated that I had to lug both a camera bag and a purse. The camera bag simply wasn't designed to hold a purse's contents and the purse could not safely and comfortably hold the camera gear. I could not leave the purse in the car, it was in a bad neighborhood and the purse would have been snatched, but the photo shoot site was well protected from crime.
Variations of this problem have cropped up over and over again. I am also shopping for a sophisticated bridge camera. I will probably use the Epiphanie for holding the bridge camera and my personal stuff and leave the empty purse in the trunk of the car. Or bring my DSLR, some abbreviated camera equipment and a few items from the purse and leave the rest in the trunk.
It is true women photojournalists and such don't use women's style camera bags, they aren't built to take the punishment doled out working in the field. Most of the market is wedding photographers, moms and women artists. And that's fine.
Anyway, I'll keep you posted on how it goes. If it doesn't work out (although I think it will) the market for used women's style camera bags is very very strong, so I'll lose little for trying this out.

My Ginger arrived this morning. They pack them like you wouldn't believe! Sturdy cardboard box, plastic wrap and also a soft package wrap complete with zipper.
So far, I am very pleased. The bag is a good size and the pleather is very soft and a rich chocolate color. The interior is a deep robin egg blue. Later this week, I'll offer my review, but I only have time to post this real quick. Please excuse the sloppy desk, I'm in an awful hurry!:D

Ooh, ooh, ooh! I really want the Ginger in brown! I like the blue as well, but I think the brown will probably stay in style longer - more classic. I'm like everyone else - I have a dozen camera bags and I'm sick of carrying around a purse and a separate camera kit. Rainyday, will you measure the length of the cross body strap, please? I'm a big girl, and have discovered that "cross body" doesn't always mean "every body!" ;)

Okay, here's my review: First off, my overall impression of the Epiphanie Ginger is very positive. It's intelligently designed, well made and attractive. It holds quite a bit of gear but balances nicely and doesn't become unwieldy. I was asked about the shoulder strap. At it's longest, it measures over 20 inches and when fully extended, the bag hit my knees. I'm 5'2" so really, the strap should fit even tall photographers easily.

I packed what I would consider a light daytrip. If I was going to a specific destination, I might pack differently. But this is an ordinary basic kit. One Canon Xsi, a Canon 70-200 f4 L lens, a Tamron 17-55 lens, Canon 430 flash, a media wallet, lens cleaning supplies, lens hood and my own wallet. Also small notepad and pens. It can hold more, but I prefer to keep keys and my cell phone on my person.

Ginger comes with alot of dividers and you can design them however you please. I will tell you I just hate organizing camera bags. Feel free to come to my house and do that for me. I set it up for me, but trust me, you can custom it lots and lots of different ways and they will all be better than mine.
http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7171/6434466569_083f110285.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/31447080@N04/6434466569/)

The side pockets are also very good and I love the front pocket. Holds lots of stuff securely. The front pocket is slightly sturdier than the side pockets, I would suggest putting gentle stuff in the side pockets (business cards) and sharper or bulkier stuff in the front pockets (pens, wallets, keys)

Ginger does not come with a rain protector or a bottom protector. She isn't sturdy like a LowePro or plain like a Domke or bulky like a Think Tank. She is a poor choice for conflict photographers or photographers of penguins or African lions in the wild. But she's perfect for portraiture or weddings where you don't want to look like a paparrazzo or you just want a pleasant day taking pictures and accepting compliments on your gorgeous bag. One more thing: Epiphanie is high priced. Compare her to vinyl (pleather) purses and you'll feel a bit concerned. But my opinion is that Ginger is worthy of her price. She is well made, well designed and any photographer would be proud to add her to her selection of camera bags.

Thanks so much for the review that was great!. Is that the 7D you have in the bag or the Xsi, and does it have the 50mm lens on it?
Rainyday

I put the Xsi in, just because it's right now my daytrip camera. However, the Ginger would easily hold the 7D, no problem. And yes, the 50mm is mounted on it.
I take the Xsi if I am worried about theft or damage, I take the 7D when I am trying for really outstanding images, or anything that requires sophisticated focus. The focusing difference between the Xsi and the 7D is night and day.
I'm taking Ginger out for a photo trip this weekend and will post the results. I think she'll do just fine.

Why am I looking at 5 pages of bag envious individuals postings and I cant help myself thinking why male deserve the squarish, dumb, black only looking bag that shouts "I'm a camera bag no doubt about it!" and expected us to brag about how many smart compartments it has, how many accessories it can keep and how durable it is which just remind me how stupid we have been carrying these bags after all these years!

There are loads of 'manly man' nice manbags out there... its harder for the ladies to grab a chic' purse'esc camera bag IMO. Think Tank pinestone 10 or 20 tho... you are right... it lacks in the compartment area... tho the ones that scream camera bag are chocked full of compartments...
If *I* were a dude... this is the would be my bag... its pretty slick. http://www.etsy.com/listing/87670286/pre-order-mensunisex-leather-dslr-camera Click down through the pictures, shows it 'on' and looks nice. :D (tho I'd order it in a 'large' instead of a medium... since it IS a custom order so it can hold more 'stuff') ;)

hey thats 1 nice bag! How did you find it? I'm looking at their website now all very nice but I'm seriously thinking which 1 will look nice on me lolz...I'm a fan of green but I find the color pretty hard to match with clothes and stuffs especially for occasions. I'm looking at these too:

I'll have to look at the Lowepro app, that sounds interesting. But I carry different equipment depending on the specific shoot, so I wonder if it would work for me. I think I'll go take a look and find out. About the Jill-e's: they have been criticised in other forums for being high priced and poorly made. And in my opinion, they are kinda ugly. The Epiphanie's are well made and (again, just my opinion) are better value for your money, and much better looking.
I think camera bags for women are definitely a growth industry. There are women who are artist photographers, wedding and portrait photographers and women who want to capture almost every moment of their families activities and can now do so, since digital is so much cheaper than film.
Women photographers rock! 8-)

I really like the front loading camera area. Dislike that you have to purchase the bag & then the shoot sac separately (I never quite understood the shoot sac as a product in itself, I never saw a need for 'just a bag for my lenses)... its a great product for those that already own the shoot sac tho. Would have been nice if the bag had more compartments on the interior w/o purchasing a secondary product. That makes it an expensive bag system.

Lore. If you were my wife, you would be whining A LOT. Today's my wife's 65th. Other than her mother, who is 88, she is older than anyone else than I know. haha. She is going to open her present later, after I take her to an expensive restaurant. She got her iphone 4S a few weeks ago, and loves it. Think Tank makes a lens changing bag that is far superior to the ShootSac. I think the ShootSac is silly.

Often the tracking results lag several days, or even weeks, behind the actual package's location. Lest you think I'm hammering the USPS, Canon's repair tracking has a similar problem with realism.

My Ginger in brown came today! (They had sent the wrong tracking number, and were quick to send me the correct one when I emailed them.) I have so much crap that I have to carry in my purse that it isn't quite big enough to hold all my camera kit and my purse stuff. But I love how it looks, and am busy reconfiguring it to work best for me. For anyone wondering - the crossbody strap is really long! I'm a very heavy woman, and when I let it all the way out it was across my body and down past my hip! I had to shorten it - something I don't often get to do. Thank you, Epiphanie

Okay, so I'm gonna be really nosy here. I have tons of room in my Ginger for all my stuff, may I be nosy and ask what you pack in your purse? I have wallet, small notepad, small zippered pouch for misc stuff, glasses case, small p&s camera, and sometimes a Galaxy Tab or Nook. When I pack my Ginger, I bring the wallet, small zippered pouch, glasses case, small notepad. I also pack one camera body, two zoom lenses, lens cleaner, flash, business cards and one media wallet. I carry my keys and cell phone on my person no matter what.

Not nosy at all - I"m really curious as to how you got all that into the Ginger! Would you put up some pics of how you packed all that stuff?
I have a large wallet, iphone, blackberry (for work) chargers for iphone and blackberry, Kindle, Leatherman, notepad, chequebook, sunglasses, pens, and general bits and bobs (gum, asparin, throat losenges, earphones for iphone, etc.)
My camera kit for walkabout includes the 5d2 w/ 24/105 attached with hood reversed, 70-200 with hood, 100L, 1.4 extender in pouch, 3 77mm filters + step up ring, extra battery, charger, rocket blower, microfibre cloth, and shutter release. Once I put all that into the bag, and then added everything from the purse it was too full and didn't want to zip. Plus it was really heavy.

I think the problem is weight. I don't like it. I'd rather have a bag with a wonderful, comfortable strap, not too heavy. So, I prefer the not so lovely looking Passport-type bags. I can fit a 5D with 24-70 attached, a 70-200 2.8 IS in a wrap and a 580ex with all the stuff from my purse in the Passport. It's not that heavy. But if I didn't need the 70-200, I'd probably just take the Domke F5XB and a purse or just the Passport with the zipper up, making it smaller.
I hope you are loving the bag. It looks amazing.

I took some pics but they came out lousy. I'll try again later. Here's what I would change: use a smaller wallet. Take out the Kindle. I don't know what a Leatherman is, so no ideas there. Take out the checkbook and use a debit card instead. Use one pen, and get a small one. Get a SMALL metal tin and put in a few aspirin, lozenges, gum (Trident, not the full sized stick). Maybe remove the earbuds for the iPhone. Put your iPhone in your pocket, ditto for keys.
For the photography, I'd leave out the rocketblower, 100L, shutter release, (you can use the self timer instead) charger, 1.4extender (you already have the 70-200 zoom, so I think the 100L and extender is redundant)
Packing a purse/camera bag is tricky. And heck, no matter how you pack it, you are going to wish you had something else. But you gotta balance personal needs, camera needs and comfort. It's a fun challenge.

Items: small Fossil wallet, small notepad and one pen, 70-200L lens, 7D with Tamron 17-50 zoom attached, lens cleaner fluid and cloth, media wallet, business cards, two hoods. The little bag holds misc items both personal and photographic.

There is still room. I could add another battery, maybe a charger and one of those plastic flipover camera manuals. Or I could add a flash. Just depends on what I'm hoping to photograph. If I was going somewhere outdoor with lots of bright sunshine, I'd skip the flash and toss in some sunglasses instead. If it's an easy day trip, I'd bring an extra battery but no charger. If I was going on an actual travel trip, I'd bring the smaller Xsi rather than the 7D. What's interesting is that there are dozens of ways to pack and there is no absolutely right way to bring your gear. It's whatever works at the time. If I'm dong alot of walking, it's different than when I'm photographing from the car. Sometimes, I'll bring tons of stuff and literally rent a stroller to tote my gear. Looks kinda silly but it works. At those times, I'll pack Ginger full to bursting.

I've heard some issues with quality over time (leather cracking etc.). Even then, I'm still eying the new line...Lyric in slate blue or Stella in gray. I've been debating so much, they keep creating new bags that I prefer over the old ones. :)
There's a big size difference between the Stella and the Lyric, so that might help you decide.
I just got a Lyric in plum, and I'm so in love! It's equal parts gorgeous and practical.

Looks like a great choice. How is it to carry that bag loaded on your shoulder for hours?
would you mind posting a shot of the bag fully loaded with all that stuff looking in from the top? I'm just curious how you pack it in there. I'm checking out your blog right now.
I'm going to FL in a couple of weeks and I may just have to buy me one of these bags before I go. Looks much nicer than a plain old black camera backpack!

The bag is really comfortable. Surprisingly so. The braided handles are so comfortable, and it comes with a cross-body strap with a cushy shoulder pad, also. I'd use that if I were going to be walking around with it for a long time, but the shoulder straps are just fine for going around town. There's a shot on my blog looking down from the top. The stuff you can't see from that shot include my tablet and eReader, which fit into a zippered exterior pocket on the back of the bag (designed to hold an iPad, but my two are smaller than that). The front exterior small zippered pockets hold spare batteries for my camera and flash, SD card holder and filter. Lens cloth and cleaning solution slip into the interior zippered pocket.
Depending on how much stuff you need to carry, the Lola bag has almost the exact same dimensions as the lyric, except it's 8" wide instead of 4", and it has a couple of extra dividers. I'm only 5'0", so I thought it would be awkward having a bag sticking out from my hip 8", which was one of the big reasons I went with the Lyric instead. It's the smallest of her bags. I was a little worried when I ordered that it might be too small, but I shouldn't have been, it holds a LOT. It's the newest bag, so there weren't a lot of great photos of it in action out there showing just what it's capable of.

@Lore~ What kind of camera strap is this in your photograph? I'm looking for a 'fun' strap to use, yet still good quality. Did you special order this one, or was it custom?
At last I got to open the box ;) & take it with to my parents last night.
Initial Impressions:
Impressed upon opening the box... the bag had it's own bag w/ a 'welcome to your bag card ♥ epiphanie' card inside. I thought it was nice.

Fully loaded w/ my 7D, 17-55 IS, 24-105L, Sig 50, 430exII, rocket blower, extra battery, charger, extra cards & a few other small odds & ends, with space left for more. The bag weighed in at 10.6 lbs, included shoulder strap has a wonderfully comfortable shoulder pad its amazing once you put it on, the bag does not feel its weight at all.

These are my 'initial' impressions from a 1 time carry to the parents. I'll see if I can add more later. What *I* personally like & what I was looking for in this style of bag and in a bag for me is the position the camera sits in, in the bag.
Merry Christmas Everyone :D

An acquaintance of mine makes cute strap covers: http://wonderforest.storenvy.com/collections/42080-wonder-forest-living
She uses minky fabric for the side that's on your neck. I haven't tried any myself, but they *look* good, and seem like they would up the comfort factor a bit.

My Epiphanie Lyric arrived today. I ordered last Thursday. Amazing delivery time considering I live in Australia!
I purchased the Plum colour and it is just a delicious colour. I have not edited the photo's below in terms of colour, so hopefully what you see is a true representation of the colour. Although the material is not leather, the feel of the material is soft and squishy like a soft leather. On the back of the bag is a compartment for the iPad. I have an iPad 2 with a case on it and it fits comfortably in the compartment (see photos). The front has 2 zippered compartments which are deceptively roomy. I can fit my iPhone in there and still have room for tissues and keys - they extend quite a bit. Inside the bag has a small zippered compartments for lady items. The main cavity comes with 3 insert dividers, one tall and 2 shorter ones (see photo). Its hard work getting them in place, but this good because once they are there...they are not moving anywhere! In the photo's I have 7D with 28-135 lens attached, my 10-22mm, my 430 flash, my wallet, small toiletries bag, and still plenty of room in there. I could easily fit my 50mm in there if I wanted to. Fully loaded, the plait strap doesn't work for me, but the larger one with the padding is perfect. The bag doesn't feel overly heaving on the shoulder considering what I had packed in there (had iPad in there as well).
Its a gorgeous bag - I love it!

Thanks for your review and photos. I read your blog entry as well. I like to carry my camera with tamron attached in the horizontal position (just easier for me to grab that way). Based on the bag's dimensions, do you think mine would fit that way, or just vertical. I'm also looking at the Ginger. Decisions decisions. :-)

Hi Sweetpea
My 28-135 fits attached in the horizontal position. It extends a little further out than the actual base of the bag though. As the material is soft, it gives a little. So I can fit the 7D with the lens to the side, or straight up, or straight down, or to the front (if that makes sense).

Hi... I just came accross this site yesterday and finding this very helpful!
Any way you can photo yourself wearing the bag crossbody style?? Please? :)
I love the look of this bag, but I'm concerned on how big it may be for every day. I am torn between the kelly moore b-hobo and this one. I prefer the 4 inch wide since I plan on using it as my everyday bag when I'm out and about.
I found the b-hobo at Hunts Camera yesterday, and I think it may be the perfect size, but then concerned, what if I wanted a little bigger for a diaper and wipes and a bottle of water and a few snacks.
I currently have a canon xti with kit lens, 50 1.8 and 75-200 and a 480exII flash. I'd like to fit the camera with the 50 attatched, the kit lens, and flash probrably the most. Only the 75-200 for kids concerts/etc. Will the lyric be too big? Any idea if the b-hobo will be too small. Don't know if you have experience with this one. I'm hoping to get the canon 60d with the 18-135is eventually, which is obviously a bigger body and lens.
Thank you !!

I have the b-hobo and it is a great everyday size! To test how much I could put in it, I just put my 7D with 24-70mm f2.8 attached (lens facing down and this is a big heavy lens) in the center compartment. I put a 70-200mm f4 in one side and a 580exII flash AND a 50mm f1.4 on the other side. Everything fits fine. The outside zip pocket could hold a wallet, keys, and a few small personal items. No room for water, diapers, etc. Would I want to carry it loaded like this? Not necessarily, at least for very long, even with the nicely padded cross strap! That's over 7 lbs of gear! However, once the camera and whatever lens is attached to the camera is out of the b-hobo, it is easy to carry.
Good luck--I don't think you can go wrong with either bag. I know the Kelly Moore bag is very high quality, and from what I read, the Epiphanie is too. Oh, I am just a little over 5'3", and the b-hobo fits my size pretty well (for a bag that you are lugging around camera gear in :-) Normally, if I need any more gear, I just take a backpack--it's more comfortable for heavier loads...)

Sorry for the multiple posts but I just looked up the dimensions of the b-hobo and the lyric. The b-hobo is 15" long x 4" wide x 9.5-10.5" tall (which agrees with mine). The lyric is 13" long x 4" wide x 15" tall. So the b-hobo actually has 2" more length--doesn't seem like much but it may make it feel roomier.

I get asked this alot, my strap has traveled w/ me through lots of cameras, 20D on through 4 other cameras to my current one ;) I've had it since 2008 when she was an ebay only company... she has her own website now w/ more designs and options & how it attaches to the camera & the logo tab is different too. BUT if the quality is still the same as it was in 2008 I would highly recommend these :D way comfy on the neck, slightly padded, and as you could see in the picture has held up well & looks great!

Kathfern...
Thank you for posting this picture! I'm still up in the air of what to do though. I'm torn with the height of it, but I think a few diapers can easily be stacked on top if needed, so that is a plus. It does seem that the pockets have more room b/c they seem "looser" so maybe allowing more room for bulkier items (compared to the b-hobo front pockets).
I wish there were retail stores that carried them so I could see it in person compared to the b-hobo. The think I did just notice with the b-hobo is that they added a divider lengthwise for ipad. I think a few diapers and wipes could easily slide in there.
Plus I could drive 40 min tomorrow and buy the b-hobo but I'd have to wait for the epiphanie LOL.. I don't have to have it now, but we are going away in a couple of days, but I can make do with the basic camera bag.
And unfornately my 50mm 1.8 broke in half 2 days ago out of no where while using it, so I'm down a lens right now :/
