I was checking out E-bay and found tonnes of OEM / third party battery for my S50. Have any of you bought these batteries? These were nicely priced at around $15 - $30. Much cheaper than Canon's. Should I stay away from them and stick to Canon's batteries?

I would stay away from them. With such a beautiful and expensive camera, I'd hate for you to run the risk of damaging it and voiding your warranty by using sub-standard batteries. Is it worth it just by saving a few bucks on batteries?

True, now that I think about it, i would rather pay the extra for my camera. At least I know that it's from Canon and won't leak or fail on me or worse...

I tried the "Digipower" brand battery for my S30 and found it lacking.
I bought it at the same time as my camera, and used the Canon battery and the Digipower equally. At first it seemed to be just as good as the Canon. But after 4 months or so I began to notice the Digipower was not holding a charge as long as the Canon. By the time it was 6 months old it was lasting (no kidding) about 5 minutes before it was needing another charge.
I threw it in the garbage and bought a Canon replacement. That was 3 months ago. Both batteries are still going strong. The old one still performs as well as the new. (I forgot to mark the new one when I got it, and now I honestly dont know which is which!)
