I really want the new Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM, but they say it is ONLY compatible with 20D and digital rebel series. Is it really not compatible with my 10D? I know this sounds like a dumb question, but I just cannot believe a camera I bought brand new just two years ago is already "old."

It's sad but true. The 10D was the first digital megahit for Canon, and I think Canon underestimated the resulting demand for wide-angle lenses for the smaller format. They had to step up their R&D and apparently they thought providing a mount allowing more intrusion into the mirror box was the best solution to get lenses to the market. I suspect that was as much the reason for the relatively quick replacement of the 10D with the 20D as anything.
There are alternatives, including two fine 12-24 zooms, one each from Sigma and Tokina. Yes, 10 is wider than 12, but 12 is usually wide enough. I have the Sigma, and think highly of it.
I do recall that there is a hack that will permit some EF-S lenses to go onto a 10D, but I'll have to leave it to someone else to explain it.

Bummer. Thanks for the info and recommendations Rick. I will check out the lenses you recommend.

The Tokina 12-24mm is a great lens - built better and actually just as sharp if not sharper than the Canon 10-22. It's also a coupla hundred bucks cheaper. The AF isn't as snappy as the 10-22, but that's not a big deal for landscape shots.

There are couple more options out there now compatible with the 10D:
- Sigma 10-20 f/4-5.6
- Tamron 11-18 f/4-5.6
I've been thinking about the Sigma, but haven't found a way to rationalize the money yet. Give me time....
