Have had a Canon EF 17-40 for a couple days...no scientific testing yet, but appears to be another from Canon...seems crisp, sharp, speedy AF....so far, no regrets....AB
Shots taken only with Canon 10D thus far....

I just picked up a 17-40 f/4.0L and so far it seems like a great lens. Is is a wee bit heavier than my Sigma 17-35 but in all other respects it is a much better lens. It focuses much faster and quieter, the images are noticably sharper, and, what came as a surprise for me, it focuses much closer (.28 meters for the Canon vs .5 meters for the Sigma).

Also is it F 4.0 all the way from 17-40?

This replaces a Tamron 24-70 used with my film body since I shoot in very tight quarters.
I just paid $730 for a USA model, which is $70 than B&H and most other advertised sites.
This glass is smooth...

Yes.. the EF 17-40/4L is a must have on the 10D.
Very flare-resistance (thanx to the flare-cutting diaphragm just behind 1:st lensgroup)
The hood is large as a plate (same as EF 16-35/2.8L) but it does the job.
I am very VERY pleased with mine. Pretty sharp already @ f4

Comparing to Sigma 15-30 .... ?
Cheaper ... also sharp?

The Sigma EX 15-30 is also sharp but you will see more distorsion with the sigma. Since it´s 15mm you will get the disorsion of a 15 mm lens (yepp, the FOV CROP helps, but not all the way). + The sigma is accually close to 16mm (according to a test done by a swedish photomag), wich means that the jump to 17mm isnt that far away.. I first ordered the Sigma, but changed my mind when the 17-40 hit the market.
EF 17-40/4L
+ Silent and ultra fast AF
+ Extremly flare-resistance (thanks to the special flare-cutting diagphrame)
+ Low distorsion even on a 35-mm film based SLR
+ constant f4
- Price (matched to the sigma)
EX 15-30/3.5-4.5
+ Wider
+ Better pricing
- Much flare
- AF motor screams like a pig (compared to USM/HSM)
- much vignetting (allthough even, so not that notable)
It all comes down to how much you want to spend on the lens. In my case, the choise was pretty easy..

There is no such sigma that is sharper than a canon lens do not tell your self the lie if you do not have money to spend. Just be happy with your sigmas and the money you have saved. But they are no canon's by far that is why they are cheeper. Also Sigma HSM will not work for wild life photography it is way way too loud click and click it is a joke. I have had 3 sigmas and have used them as I would any canon and all 3 have failed with some kind of problem. To date I have never had any canon lens ever fail and some are a bit old and have lots of use and have never worn out or failed. In this life you get what you pay for. A BMW is a BMW and a KIA is a KIA it is the same for cars and the same for lenses. So just be happy but sigma not in the BMW class of lenses it is in the KIA class. Good luck.

I just purchased the Canon 17-40 L 4.0 lens for my 10D and after a quick test shoot around town I am very impressed. Since I shoot lots of "people" events ( weddings, special events, conventions, etc )...having the low end of the wide agle range is a must...and this lens is very fast to focus, and is very sharp. I am sure this lens will be on my camera most of the time. Its built very well ...very solid..but not too heavy. If you don't need the extra stop the 16-35L 2.8 gives you for low light situations...the 17-40 L 4.0 is a great buy for the price ( in my opinion)

If I may ask, where are you folks finding the Canon 17-40 for $725 or even under $750?
Thanks!
