Phoned Canon Australia about 24-105 flare after reading about it on this and other forums and I was able to create this fault with a desk lamp, they knew nothing about it. Received a call back and they have had confirmation from Canon Japan about the problem and was told to take lens to my local Canon service center. It was to late today to drop off lens and could not get through by phone to see how long it would take.

Yeah... bad news... Rumors about the production itīs stopped and it looks like Canon itīs going to recall at all 24-105 owners to fix this problem in the next coming weeks. If somebody itīs interested more deeper, here itīs the link to FM with more info:

Fascinating stuff !
Lots of "photon torpedo" images on Fred Miranda. They range from "artistic" to "ruinous". That does not look like a hoax any more.
Between the northamerican, european and far east lens users there appears to be a wild divergence of info and opinions on the problem and solutions. (A recall is being mentioned most often though.)
That kinda situation is to be expected since nobody has seen a Canon Corporate communication on the subject.
Something does not look right in that L-L land ! One would expect Canon to be somewhat concerned about the notoriety that new lens is getting on the net. They should also be probably concerned about confusion that exists about the lens problem and remedies. That sort of a concern would be well demonstrated by some consistent and timely communication throughout the Canon's supply chain, for starters.
However, the way this has been playing out, I suspect we may end up with yet another good/bad copy EF lens that some, including myself, would not touch with a 10 ft pole.

this is quite disgraceful of canon to release what is essentially a flawed product. more and more I am hearing of how canon has been messing up - 20D battery grip, dirty sensors on new cameras, unacceptable number of dead or hot pixels...and now this new lens having, what in all fairness can only be described as, a serious problem. It really takes the biscuit. I wonder how this compares to Nikon... especially given its meant to be an 'L' lens. I certainly wouldn't pay for quality loss like that.
Its very easy for a company to fall into poor favour, and once there very hard to bring itself back out again. lets hope canon, in the future, perform quality control checks and actually bother to fix broken things than just pass them to the consumer to figure out what the problem is.

I agree, but this is part of the risk early adopters take with technological products of any type.
This is why I never get a car that has only been out a couple of years. No time for the problems to surface!

yeah but still, you'd think a company like canon would do some sort of tests, take pictures outside etc with it!! its got a red L on it ffs! surely they can't expect to throw out a dodgy bit of hardware and expect people to sit back and accept it? that said I guess lots will who've got them so far...

Remember, this only occurs in a very limited and specific set of conditions. It would be nice if we could test every possible situation before releasing a product, but if we did, we'd never ship anything. Note: I do not work for Canon. "We" refers to anyone involved in producing any goods and/or services.

Jon you live in denial...on my previous post you did say similar thing like this...
do you work for Canon?I do agree that certain flare efect can appear on ANY lens but in a shape of octagonal or some sorth, but a STAR WARS PLANET explosion efect over a wedding couple it is not acceptable or correctable...
I hope that Canon will fix this before my copy arrives into store.

Take a look at this link and you will see how to check if your lens is ok when it arrives in to the store:

I've ordered mine to so I will certainly check it when I see it in the store. Good luck.

Had you read my post, you'd have seen that I said I do not work for Canon. My sig would be a little heavier if I did. I also pointed out that the problem occurs only in a very specific set of conditions. If you'd read up on it, or tried to duplicate it, you'd realize that duplicating it requires an off-axis light at a specific, very narrow, zone in a very narrow range of settings. I resent your implication, and I believe a public apology is in order.

Now, here I do have a problem. My 24-105 does NOT seem to have the flare problem. I actually tried to reproduce it in very different conditions, but with no result. As a matter of fact I do have also the horrible UT0801 production # so I'm in the bunch.... oh well. Gotta call Canon Italy and see what to do. But OTOH, if I do not have the problem, why should I worry ? Probably only for the resale value, I guess.
