many thanks to those of you who provided all the detailed info i requested in my previous 100-400 thread.
indeed this is a lens to enjoy.
i plan to try it this morning as i have the day off, but one thing still nags me for some reason (definately a mental block).
does the rear element move?

I don't believe it does.

The 100-400 is one of the lenses that allows the use of the Canon TC which extends into the back of the lens. If the rear element moved, there would be a problem with that. Of course, I could walk into the other room and dig it out of the closet to be sure, but I'm very nearly positive it doesn't move, and all that noise would wake up my wife.

Tom, you should have dug it out... ;)

THe rear element is well recessed into the lens, and does move.

Richard:
Thanks for protecting summerwind4 from me.

Summerwind:
Apologies for the bad information. At least I didn't wake up my wife.

And you have a lot of lenses to remember :P

I got one and I live in Cyprus, and unless you have been here, it is a very dusty place. After nearly a year here, how much dust do I have in my lens? Not enough to worry about and I chop and change my lenses all the time while out on a shoot. It is a great lens and really tough.

A bit like that old question about if a tree falls in a forest and there nobody there to hear it does it make a sound but does the rear element move when its on the camera? :-)

Only in Norfolk do you ponder such a question, whilst plotting the downfall of Ipswich Town!
