Its probably just me,

Ironman and Rev3 brag about their pros to boost registration, and that's what this race is doing, look we have pro's! It would be cool to race with a pro but if it's the difference in me taking 1st or 4th I'd be pissed if I was knocked down out of 1st cause they let pro's race in an everyday race.

There was a big huge thread on slowtwitch about pro's racing in marathons and 5ks and bike races, winning and knocking people out of first who are not paid to do it.

If I had raced that race for 5 years and came close to placing top ten I probably wouldn't even bother signing up again if they brought pro's in.

I'm not obsessed about winning so much but these races are boosting registration from pro's and not offering any other benefit than the pro but jacking the entry fee up and all the other fees to pay the pro a nice purse.

Totally get what you mean but its billed as a Pro Challenge to be a part of the international circuit. Many Pro teams are locked in which include US teams BMC, Trek, HTC, and Gramin Cervelo. I think its a good thing as it will bring a race which matters to the US beyond the California Tour. It is also not open to the public. I do know what you are pointing towards as general races lock out pro riders who sometimes crash them!

weight capacity for q20 is 110 pounds:roll eyes: Why so much:lol::lol:

I am more concern about the sweet spot of the ballhead... how awkward of an angle can the ballhead handle a heavy lens.

according to some.. the Q10 = almost equal to the BH-55 in performance already...
and the Q20 has a larger sweet spot, so you could basically position a lens (even a heavy one) in almost anyway you want and the Q20 will probably hold it better

However, if you have any issues with it you can send it back to Markins and they will remove the clamp for you. :)

yeah heaviest set up would be D700+gripped+70-200mm+2xTC roughly 4kg I think, if I put a flash in there then maybe close to 5kg or 11lbs.

I think it will have no issues, others are talking about 500mm and putting it in awkward angles and not having issues..

That and they hurt your gas mileage too... There really aren't many pros to a roof rack.

And your bike is exposed to everything. Behind the vehicle it's protected somewhat. My bike gets covered in road dust, but that's because I'm on gravel roads all the time. But I don't have to worry about the bike being covered in bug splatters.

I've had it on my BMW and there was tons of drag and noise from it. Go with the hitch, you'll be happier.

$300 is a good price. Mine was pretty much free :) Got the rack for Christmas. Got the hitch for free from a neighbour. All I had to buy was bolts for the hitch, and a new insert for the rack. Needed to buy the stuff anyways for towing trailers. Had to put new trailer wiring on the truck as well.

so would I pass as a travel photographer? I will try and join a contest that would give 6 winners ipad2 and would bring the top 2 winners to Holland for a week to shoot for a travel magazine...

I am allowed to submit 8 photos I think and 1 themed one...

what is important is to shoot PHOTOS that are typical used in Travel magazines...
here are more 29 of my shots that I think are ok... and about 10 or so in there I consider as some of my best.

Two situations come to mind. Family gatherings during noon. Outdoors, picnic parties. I try to follow the sunny 16 but the light can be harsh or cloudy but bright.

The other time is when the party goes on and it ends up in a dark backyard. No lights except porch light in the back. Maybe some string lights here or there. I'm not that good with my flash... I get those deer caught in the headlights look,

That's a tough lighting situation. The problem with shooting midday is that the contrast is high and very unflattering if you don't have some type of fill light for your subject. It's called raccoon eyes.:) If your subject is back lit, I expose for the highlights and hit the subject with flash. Shooting at night is difficult too. Best thing to do is learn how to use your flash real quickly and chimp your shots.

Yes tough lighting conditions. Subjects are moving and candid and have no patience for a reshoot. Heh. Oh well.

It feels "odd" to use a flash for fill when it's bright but that seems like the right way to do it. Using it in the dark is harder though. :(

When you say "expose for the higlights" do you mean you set meter to the bright background/sky?

Filters wouldn't help then right?

Yes. I've never shot with filters for midday shots. I guess by using an ND it will help reduce the light to shoot your lenses wide open correct?

A CPL if used to shoot people will also help reduce glare on the subject's face if they have a sheen on their skin. Idk really. I only use a CPL for landscapes.

That's what I was thinking in my head anyways (theory).

Cut down on the bright background and shoot at a wider aperture (increase subject isolation/bokeh per se). That's why I'm trying to learn about filters.

Trying to learn about flash too. Most of the time I get to shoot at family gatherings and I have to balance exposing the subject to the background. Too much info to take in sometimes... so I'm kinda glad this is just a "hobby". Everything I learn reinforces the idea of having to deal with light. ;)
