if you take alot of in water pics and can turn it into some money go for it, otherwise i would but a nice 300mm L and just take pictures from the beach. the waves break pretty close to shore on the east coast so if you wade out to your calves a 55-250mm would be too long.

my 70-200 is fine for the beach were i live. i just love getting in the water with the gorpo but it does not take that high quality of photos.

I am thinking of getting one IPS monitor, but not sure how I am going to sell my current monitor really  and I don't need two... so I'll just use this and just make sure to calibrate it every time I have some color sensitive stuff to print :D

Use the new IPS monitor for editing while simultaneously spamming on the old monitor.  More efficient spamming, no?

Your Nikonitude manifests itself in a "My Nikon walks all over your Canons" attitude, when you know damned well that neither Canon nor Nikon takes better pictures. In the hands of an expert, either shoots Pulitzer material, and in the hands of a GWC, both shoot crap.

But you have some slight redeeming qualities, so we forgive you. Now, if I could only remember what those qualities are....
ROFLMAO!! Nice!! :lol::lol::lol:

Thanks Julian. Yup almost straight on. Didn't have much to bounce off. So i angled the flash up and to the left. Had a diffuse on it and shot away.

Although when you are outside you could bounce from almost anything as long as it is almost a white color. Being within range helps.

The way i do it is like this:

1- I meter the background with my camera (flash is off).
2- Then i turn on the flash and dial in those settings.
3- If i can i try to bounce the flash at an angle. This way the light will give shape and depth to the person.

That is really it. Work for me most of the time.

no sure haven't and the only time we get curls that big are during hurricanes. Fran & Floyed both were alot of fun, 12 foot breaks and curls thats lasted for ever. It was scary too though when the waves are slapping the bottom of the piers that are 20ft above normal water level. Storm surge is a bitch, its usually better a few days before the storm, once it hits, its all choppy and caotic!

Time for a new monitor.

Most cheap monitors are only good for "business" use, where their colors need only display graphs and pie charts.

When I monitor shop, I take a flash drive with a known image on it and go to my local computer store. Then I can compare the monitors to find one that works for me.

My wife's monitor (she's the real photographer, mind you) is a 24" Dell that I had professionally calibrated. It works flawlessly.I've been pushing for a new one for awhile... So far it hasn't paid off :/

You set your flash on manual then?

Nope im running it on ETTL-II. It usually does a good job of what i need it to do. I just set the fstop and shutter speed which i metered for and fire away. Usually i under expose the background a bit by increasing the shutter speed (reducing ambient light). This way i get a more dramatic look to the person being exposed by the flash. ETTL-II sets what it thinks the flash power output should be. Only if it goes a bit off do i go into manual mode but usually it does the job.

Thats a good shot without having much to go with! Im no expert either but most of the time that works for me. If i need too high of an iso while shooting indoors that is when i go full manual with the flash and kill ambient lighting by using the light of the flash only. Having to introduce high iso noise is something i try to avoid as much as possible.

Harm
2nd of August 2011 (Tue), 13:07
high ISO is something I have to avoid with the 40D. It just sucks above ISO 400. ISO 800 really is the limit before photos all look like ****. The 24II goes down to f/1.4 which is a life saver in dark, dark conditions.

vipergts831

This is the best way to think about flash photography. Im quoting it because i didnt say it but it sums this up well:

"Treat flash photography as two seperate exposures .. one for the ambient and one for the flash.

Use "M" mode to control the ambient light exposure and let in as much or as little as you like. Then use the ETT-L II and FEC to control the flash exposure and let in as much or as little as you like."

Julian I have been waiting for you earlier today... after seeing some of Lik's video, I love to try Panorama.

when I checked RRS's site, I think I want a pano plate and an L-attachment to convert the panorama setup to an L-bracket too...

the clamp can be rotate either way
http://reallyrightstuff.com/mmRRSNET/Images/gallery/192PPP.png

http://reallyrightstuff.com/mmRRSNET/Images/full/CRD-RAIL.gif
btw, what do you think of the Long Panoramic plates that could double as L-brackets that I showed you 2 days ago Julian? you think their good?

I am just assuming that with the good reputation of RRS, that vertical clamp would be as tight as we would want it to be...

I might get that and a regular camera plate and forego the D700 w/MB-D10 L-bracket all togetherThey won't "double as L-brackets". You can get a similar effect to having an L bracket, but the combo is closer to a half-gimbal (http://www.custombrackets.com/products/long-lens-supports/cb-gimbal-lb.html) arrangement. With an L bracket, you reposition the camera on the basic head and the weight stays centered; with those things you'd be shifing the weight off to the side, and might just as well be using a ball head and the drop slot with the camera off to the side. And don't forget that you'll still need to get an A-S plate for the camera and/or lenses.

to start with carbon fibre are pricey and Gitzo is over priced which many rich people buy. It is Lexus to Toyota or Infinity to Nissan, or Acura to Honda... Gitzo is to Manfrotto...they both belong to Vitec group

Based in Northern Italy at Bassano del Grappa, Gitzo has been working for over 90 years to design and produce the best possible camera accesssories and supports using the simplest, most straightforward and elegant solutions allowing Gitzo to pioneer some of the most advanced and revolutionary technologies.
Gitzo products are distributed through Manfrotto Distribution, also a part of the Vitec Group, in China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States, plus independent distributors in over 65 countries around the world! The unrivalled strength of the international distribution network and the team efforts between the company and the distributors is a key element in the success of the lines. The group owned distribution companies provide direct access to the market, trends and requirements which is essential in keeping the company at the forefront of development and innovation.
Gitzo Products are manufactured by Gitzo SA.

see Manfrotto is sister company here:

http://www.gitzo.com/about+Gitzo/who+is+vitec+group/Who+is+Vitec+Group/3660940I noticed none of the rich people who buy Gitzo commented on my analogy of Lexus to Toyota as Gitzo to Manfrotto.
I've got Gitzo and I've got Manfrotto. There's a bigger difference than your analogy would suggest. More like Volvo vs. Ford (before Ford sold Volvo off again). Manfrotto doesn't even make anything (that I can find) that would compare with the 3xxx or 5xxx series for capacity or height.

ohhh long plates that can be used for Panoramic shots Fricks

http://reallyrightstuff.com/ProductDesc.aspx?code=192-PPP&type=4&eq=192-PPP-001&desc=192-Precision-Plus-Package

they have another one that goes vertical will allow you to create an L bracket as wellNo, they won't.

hehehe well you guys do know that I could practically screw the camera straight to the base plate right? hahaGood luck - the base plate has a 3/8-16 thread; your camera has a 1/4-20 socket.

what do you guys think q20 with knob or q10 with lever?Knob. The Markins lever clamp is nowhere near as good as the RRS one. I replaced the Markins clamp on my Q3T with the RRS one.

yeap... AFAIK if they use loctite red on it (permanent) then its gonna be nasty to remove I think. not sure how bad though...

Loctite blue acts just like a thread locker or something... it locks the head but can be undone when jerked... of course I have no hands on experience on all this :oYou can soften it with a blowtorch; I've done it.

Yes, Markins uses Red Loctite. However, if you have any issues with it you can send it back to Markins and they will remove the clamp for you. :)Or you can ask, when you order it, for them to leave it off.

correct me if I'm wrong but UPS/FEDEX and other courier works 24hours? but don't pick up or deliver stuff on sundays?

And orders after about noon Fri. don't actually get packed until Monday, and are picked up by whatever shipper you use on Mon. evening. Adorama's the same way.

hehe here is it just me? is this front focus i focused on his eye. But some of the other shots came out good!

http://fricksjacob.smugmug.com/Other/Pets-and-Animals/i-Sd2FXNz/0/XL/IMG2534-XL.jpgWhich AF point did you use? If you tried to focus-lock-recompose at close range you would have seriously messed up your focus.

The focus is way past in front of the dog's paws. Maybe the lens had a hard time focusing on a dark eye with the surrounding black fur? :confused:That would also present difficulties. You need decent contrast at the point you're focusing.

*sigh*

relax, you still don't have your CPU ;)

They won't "double as L-brackets". And don't forget that you'll still need to get an A-S plate for the camera and/or lenses.

Jon, the second link I provided: this one Vertical Rail w/ no end clamp (http://reallyrightstuff.com/ProductDesc.aspx?code=CRD-Rail&type=0&eq=CRD-RAIL-001&desc=CRD-Rail%3a-Vertical-rail-w%2f-on-end-clamp) is described by RRS as follows:
CRD-Rail with integral “on-end” clamp slides onto the MPR-192 rail to create quick-mount vertical component. Beefy rail cross-section ensures uncompromised rigidity and stability.

and the other component that I posted: the 192 Precision Plus Package ("Sliding Clamp Package" with Mini-Clamps on MPR-192 Rail. Mini-clamps can be separated and orientation changed 90° to accept quick-release plates with dovetails running left/right and fore/aft,) has clamps that can be adjust from left to right...

except for the rails to be a bit long I don't see why they won't double as an L-bracket if combined together. and yes I am well aware that I still need to get an A-S plate for both :D

I've got Gitzo and I've got Manfrotto. There's a bigger difference than your analogy would suggest. More like Volvo vs. Ford (before Ford sold Volvo off again). Manfrotto doesn't even make anything (that I can find) that would compare with the 3xxx or 5xxx series for capacity or height.

yeah there are heavy duty Manfrotto's out there but man are they big hehe

Good luck - the base plate has a 3/8-16 thread; your camera has a 1/4-20 socket.

ohh I meant that as a joke

Knob. The Markins lever clamp is nowhere near as good as the RRS one. I replaced the Markins clamp on my Q3T with the RRS one.

hmmm... if that's the case I can just buy the head alone and install the clamp

You can soften it with a blowtorch; I've done it.

no way am I gonna blowtorch a $400 head haha I don't even have a blowtorch to begin with

And I never knew Rube Goldberg was Filipino!

The trouble with pieced together Mickey-Mouse setups is that they are dangerous. One loose screw and you can have glass all over the rocks. That could ruin your whole day.

They also lack balance, and can make the tripod unstable in a sudden gust of wind.

Check out the Wimberly Sidekick instead:http://www.tripodhead.com/products/sidekick-main.cfm. It does what you want and is safer and better than what you are considering.

If money is a real problem, and you're not using huge lenses, Manfrotto makes a gimbal head that is ugly as sin but works quite well: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/554099-REG/Manfrotto_393_393_Heavy_Duty_Gimbal.html.

Oh that is coming but im not in a super rush on it. Im training for a 100 mile bike tour in the city this september so this was higher on my priority list. The tripod during this training would just sit there. Im also thinking of going 2 series as well. So it gives me some time to shop around since i dont have an immediate use just yet.

Roger.. I am trying to make an L bracket/Pano combo... its probably a lot more stable than that hehe just focus on the stuff that I circled :D

Hehe! There's a lot of time in your life to get one. ;)

I doubt it will work in landscape mode. Most panos on a specialty head like that is shot in portrait. :)

ahhh looks cool thanks... I'll consider it, I'll definitely not get an L-bracket specific to the D700 right now, I probably will never be able to resell it locally when I upgrade :( or may not even get a single cent out of it when I bundle it up with the camera if I decide to resell it.

so my options are those long pano plates or generic plates that I can use on any camera :D

Well, I recommend the L plates. It is a nasty evil that RRS makes these darn L plates. Go with what you think will work for you.

The judge declared a mistrial in this 12 counts of sexual assault to a minor below 14 years old...the public defendant in her opening statements admitted to the sex but claimed it was consensual, the victim was an 9 year old boy by an old gay friend of the family, he calls grandpa...it was declared a mistrial because the defense attorney did not get prior agreement from the defendant to use this line of defense and the supreme court ruling say any admission such as this need defendant agreement...so only served for two days and received $80 for my services.
The defendant should rot in jail...the judge said this may be rescheduled to June next year as he is hearing 6 death penalty cases.
The deputy district attorney was very smart and made a direct to the point power point presentation on HDTV flat scree TV's ( you should see how high tech and posh the court room is, actually the whole building, this is what we have here in Nevada, first class facilities, brand new and using latest technologies)...the poor defendant admitted in the interrogation details of his sexual assaults, asking for forgiveness and promising not to do it again, he even wrote an apology letter to the mother of the victim saying his acts and promising not to do it again...he was read his miranda rights but poor uneducated guy spilled in detail his acts

did you take a juror out for lunch with the $80 :D
