I think about selling mine and the wheel everyday, and when i go to the bike shop the urge gets even stronger. I love that new bike smell.

Roger, I believe Jake is real and only needs some guidance. He could use coaching from old folks like you and me and tutoring from Mel and Harm. He is lucky in many ways, he has rich parents and plenty of peeps in this forum to teach him. I only wish he spends less time here and enjoy real, his young life, including chasing girls as suggestedby a few.

I shot the sun today hoping to catch a glimpse of the sunspot that erupted a few days ago. I usedthe 100-400 With thousand oaks filter, all over exposed on the sun and not sharp focus. I am also preparing for the transit of Venus on June 5 2012, visible during sun rise in Europe , sunset in north America and visible the whole time in the Pacific,Including Cebu, noon time in Hawaii. This is the pair transit and will h appen again 212 years from 2012. My transit picture 7 years ago from long island NY. No filter used, the clouds diffuse the sun rays, Venus is that small black dot, lower right of sun

I see math is not your strong suit.
$600 tax on $6000 is a tax of 10%. 10% is an increase of 25% over 8%. A difference of 25% is not a "tad" more, it's a significant difference.

Well, in the pre-microprocessor days, I programmed an old Honeywell vacuum tube and thyratron machine, but that was directly in machine language, hard programming with patch cords. It was used as a troposcatter encoder/decoder. Eccles-Jordan circuits anyone?
In the micro world, I cut my Assembly teeth on the 8008 (I missed the 4004), then on to the 8080, 8085, Z80, 8086/88, Z800, 80186/88, and so forth. Back then, they needed people like me to write drivers for all those new-fangled gizmos, like daisy-wheel printers and floppy disks. I was heavy into CP/M, TurboDOS, and the early versions of MS-DOS.
How many of the new generation code plunkers even know what "DOS" stands for? Do you remember front panels? Or paper-tape readers?
I dropped out of programming in the days of the 80486, which should let you know just how rusty I am. Hell, Windows was still running under DOS back then!

Well, The 486 ruled for ~4 years (until ~1993), but windows continued to run atop DOS until ~2000. So the CPU generation is a better indicator than the general windows architecture is.

You are a young kid then, micrprocessors, circa late 70 to 80...i even built an analog Heath Kit computer using vacuum tubes, very conversant with those...i got involved involved with primarily main frame except was part of the world wide team deciding on two competing projects, one became the IBMPC, while our project was more advanced in processor and operating system, the IBM Displaywriter using 8086 and UCSD Pascal operating system, visicalc for spreadsheet and the first spell check word processor...well the PC initially with 8088, later at AT with 80186, won because it was decided to be shared and open to the industry, while the Displaywriter was a proprietary system.

Did anyone see the word troposcatter? Okay before the advent of satellite communications, most rely on radio communications, the short wave that we hear broadcast from foreign stations will be an example, shortwave 3 mhz to 30 mhz, sends signals that are bounced by the diffeferent layers of the athmosphere, the ionesphere, that is a function of the sun and the sunspot cycle...in any case it was not that reliable znd dependent on the ionodphere conditions...vhf, 3-300 mhz, and uhf 300-3 ghz, very high and ultra high freq are line of sight communications useful overvshort distances
To cover longer distances 700-1000 miles using vhf radio, some, the military primarily, use very powerful transmitter in the hope that the troposhere will reflect back some of the radio waves. For Filipinos familiar with the very large antennas, like a big fence, in Tagaytay ridge, that is the military troposcatter to Mindanao.
I even sold a few meteor shower radios, using the ionized region caused by meteors.
I wonder how many ham radio folks are here. I was DU1AVN.

If you mean the time of Cyrus and Darius, yes they were. The abacus was invented in China around 3000 B.C.E.
It used quinary math (base 5). While not quite as convenient as decimal math (for humans), it beat the Hell out anybody else's math at the time.

It was just the 1st thing that popped into my mind. I love crazy old movies, with great storylines.
I tried to show my wife the original "Clash of the Titans" recently, but she wouldn't watch it after ~15-20 minutes saying it was lame. I remember getting really excited whenever that would come on TV. Different times, different expectations. :-P

I do too, except I know just where, and it works . . . Also a couple of 41Cs, a slew of modules for them, the expansion pack for one, and a couple of HP-48s and an HP-50. The HP-45 doesn't still work, I fear, but I think it's the battery pack that's gone. Several slide rules, both straight and circular, and a couple of abaci. Earliest proramming was on a PDP-8, via TTY33s and a 110 baud dial-up. Program storage was the good old paper tape.

Did anyone saw the word troposcatter?
I was DU1AVN.

you didn't have one of those cool watches casio made in the 80's that was a calculator?
When the first Casio G-Shock watches appeared, the Navy issued them to all the instructors at the Second Class Diving School in San Diego. The watches would beep twice on the hour and once on the half hour. During staff meetings, everything would come to a halt when all the watches started beeping. Of course, there was always someone who was a bit slow so the meeting was held up even more waiting for that last beep. :D
