I have just got a canon A95 and just do not understand it all!
It would seem that all the different things have to work together to make a good photo but I dont understand what they each do or what they are! The manual isnt very explanative either. Whats iso do? and shutter speed and then aperture and DOF and other complicated things. How do I get them all to come together when I dont even know the reason for them!! I dont want to give into automatic when I know I could be getting so much more out of my camera. HELP PLEASE!!

First, you need to get a good photography book and read. ;) I suggest "Understanding Exposure" by Brian Peterson.
Consider correct exposure, or "creative exposure" as Brian explains in his book, as the inside of a triangle where ISO, shutter speed and apperture are at each tip of that triangle. You have to stay inside the triangle in order to have good pictures.
Don't worry too much...digital allows you to experiment at no cost. Learn to read the histogram when you review your pictures. Its your best tool right after taking a shot. Your A95 is a great camera right out of the box, and an even better one when using its manual modes. You gonna love it.
Welcome to the forums and good luck.

Go to this thread of this forum. This subject is dicussed and not for the first time. In one of the replies there are a few links to good, simple on-line guides about camera and photography :
