This is a local road in town that always gets flooded in the spring, So when it was flooded this past week due to all the heavy rain, no one thought to much about it at first. It runs along the river on the right of the photo, under the old railroad trestle. What happened this time though is that a stream, out of the photo on the left, which runs through a culvert under the RR. got plugged and the steam flowed over and under the road adding to the river flooding and washed the road out. the dark objects on the yellow line in the back ground are actually large pieces of pavement. Flood water has an awful lot of power. More rain coming.

Doesn't seem as if this catch basin is going to be much use.

that's terrible, what happened Sandy ,
and you say there is more rain on the way

the bridge looks to be lower the the 'usual'
I imagine there is not much heavy or high traffic along there

seems perfect for cycling
{except for the hole}

Yes more rain this week-end but Not anywhere near as much as we've had. The clearence under the bridge is not much so it doesn't all for to anything to tall.

That RR Bridge isn't going anywhere it was erected in 1867 and is still an active rail line for Amtrak and Freight, It's the main line from New Haven /Hartford to Boston and Vemont and points north.

Thanks for the Comments.

Thanks much for the comments Stan and rockone. You are right the power of water is amazing. those photos are also proof as to way you should never drive through a road covered with flood water. You never know if there's a road under you anymore.

That's the one! You pictures turned out so much nicer though! I have a couple from there on my photography page here (http://www.designsbypam.com/photography/thumbnails.php?album=2). It ended up being a harsh day for me to take photos. There are also pictures of the cemetary at the First Church there in the albums.

Thanks, I looked at your gallery, you've got some very nice photos there, and I do like the one of the First Church. I'm still trying to time a Freight train on the Trestle, but I never seem to get there at the right time. no excuss either I work right around the corner.   :D

Funny... the whole time living here, I've never seen a train go over that. They do? LOL Maybe I'll see you around there one day ;) You'll be the one watching the train tracks and I'll be the one still trying to figure out my Canon 20D. :D

Well there's a freight that goes north in the morning between 7 and 9 or so and another around noon, plus some in between and Amtrak all day long. I just always seem to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Now that I look at it again, can cars actually fit under that? Looks awfully small.

Sandy,
That's a lovely bridge. I speacily like the one where we can see it complete (I mean the crossing from below).

Water can be very destructive for sure. Some years ago we had heavy rains up north and a more then 100 yo river bridge colapsed without warning taking the cars that were passing.Though it seemed solid, the structure was impacted by the many trees and rocks that the water carried from the margins.

lot of towns took a pretty bad hit on this last big rain storm, lot of roads had washouts on them. Nothing as bad as this one though.

If I remember correctly the distance from the center of the road to the high point in the arch is about 10' of clearence. not much but enough cars and vans.

Thanks Jaime, you are right water is one of the most powerful forces on earth. When it gets really moving the best thing is to just get out of the way.
